First of all, this was my son’s first experience with a mental health facility. It was a HORRIBLE experience from start to finish. The staff was uncaring and not attentive to the patients needs. They were degrading and one nurse even joked about not giving patients their meds. If I would call and check on my son, I was met with rudeness and annoyance and sometimes couldn’t even be connected to the unit he was in. I was actually told by a nurse that she had 25 other patients to care for and did not have time to talk to me about my son, who is 18. The final straw was upon release we were sent home with another patients medical diagnosis paper which included her address and phone number. Can we say HIPPA VIOLATION???! I wouldn’t recommend this facility to my worse enemy! It was HORRIBLE!

My mom’s there and they won’t provide her medicine that helps her eat, she has trouble sleeping and they took away her machine that lets her sleep without being out in danger. In general this place is horrible and I can already tell it’s not going to help her. I also noticed the responses to these reviews are copy and pasted. Talking about some “We care about your concerns” when your really just copy and pasting. Do better when people are here struggling to survive.

Very impersonal. Didn't even get to speak to a doctor. Staff was unprofessional and unhelpful. When I asked for an explanation of a treatment program, they simply placed a piece of paper on the table and said "here it is." Virtually nothing was explained throughout the process. It felt like I was just a part on an assembly line. A feeder for making money off of someone's pain and suffering. It's hard to believe the person doing my evaluation was a trained mental health professional. Boiler plate questions with no actual interest in reality. This is not helpful for someone suffering with severe depression and desperate for help. Horrible.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient rehabs offer robust wraparound care for clients who are stepping down from intensive inpatient care, with many facilities providing multiple levels of care, including partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), sober living/halfway housing, and standard outpatient programming. Clients may also elect to enroll in outpatient care immediately after completing inpatient detox. Those who are at lower risk of withdrawal complications may also choose to receive ambulatory medical detox from an outpatient facility. Outpatient programs typically involve addiction counseling, recovery education, and/or medication assisted treatment (MAT). Holistic therapies, such as art and music therapy, are commonly available.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) are designed for clients who need frequent, high-level care but do not require, or choose to forgo, inpatient treatment. Most intensive outpatient rehabs offer a minimum of nine hours of treatment weekly, though clients may receive up to 20 hours of care as needed. These programs typically combine various treatment modalities, including individual, group, and family counseling, medication assisted treatment (MAT), addiction and recovery education, and evidence-based complementary therapies, such as acupuncture and massage.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

Designed for individuals with moderate to severe addictions, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) provides a more intensive form of outpatient therapy. PHP treatment can serve as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or as a step-down option after being discharged from a hospital or residential program. A partial hospitalization program typically requires a minimum of 20 hours weekly for an average of 90 days. Depending on your care plan, PHPs can include relapse prevention, medication management, and behavioral therapy services.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Medical detox involves clearing your body of drugs and/or alcohol under the 24/7 care of licensed medical professionals. If you've become dependent on alcohol or drugs (like benzodiazepines or opioids), quitting abruptly can have uncomfortable and even dangerous side effects. The purpose of medically assisted detox is to keep you as safe and comfortable as possible during this process. Medications like Suboxone or Vivitrol may be provided if necessary to mitigate any withdrawal symptoms.

Treatments

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Highland Springs is the worst place ever. NEVER send your loved one here for help. I would give ZERO stars if I could. They will just drug them up to collect insurance money and traumatize them. SOOO many people have left here in worse shape. PLEASE don't let the beautiful pictures of the facility fool you. They recently removed their FB page because people are exposing them!! The truth will come out soon about this place. They can take their FB page down, but I will never stop leaving reviews anywhere I can. Revision: They did not take their FB page down. They just removed and blocked me for exposing them. A class action lawsuit is in the works!!! P.S. (UPDATE) The response from them is HILARIOUS!! No one will return your calls or talk to you once you break your person out of here!!!

I stayed here for 1 week. They had a really hard time getting me any of my usual stomach medicines for 3 days! I couldnt eat or drink much for 2 days and i ended up in the ER twice. They left me crying and screaming on the floor for over 3 hours because the nurse insisted on waiting for the medical doctor to come see me and she wasnt answering. The first time i went to the ER the doctor wrote them a bunch of information on what i can take and am supposed to take but they ignored it. None of the staff talks to eachother at shift about what's happening with each patient. Super frustrating. I really liked the therapists and the psych nurse practitioners. All the patients were nice and we could all relate to eachother in some way. The food once i finally was able to eat was decent. The one nurse that didnt care about my pain and a couple other people that just didnt care about the patients at all really soured the whole thing. I appreciate the nurses and aides that DID care and the one aide that advocated for my pain and vomiting. This is why i dont like to go to any psychward besides the cleveland clinic. Places like this are NOT good at all for people with any physical health problems.

Inpatient & Outpatient: Almost Separate Worlds Inpatient: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Cons: If you have medical needs, it's a bit of a hassle. You must supply some of your own medications, which then need to be approved by their pharmacy—this can take time (these would be more specialty meds, not basic stuff). If you're going in voluntarily, print and bring a current med list. If involuntary, try to have a family member bring everything in. Some staff treat patients like inmates instead of people. It’s not the majority, but enough to be upsetting. Understaffed, especially in terms of therapists. During my 2024 stays, patients met with therapists almost daily. This year, it was usually just a one-time intake. Pros: Therapy-heavy program. Unlike other facilities where therapy means mostly art/music, here you get two structured DBT/CBT-based therapy groups a day plus art and music groups. Some staff are truly amazing—kind, compassionate, and skilled. Outdoor access several times a day (for fresh air or smoking). Food is decent, with substitutions available, snacks, and a Pepsi fountain. Units have flavored water, too. Beds are relatively comfy. Rooms have showers. Dayrooms are cozy. You can wear normal clothes, just no strings/belts. You can have toiletries and makeup (some items are locked up for safety). The library is well-stocked. There’s also a small workout area. Depending on the staff, you might be allowed board/card games from family—but the rules can change on a whim. --- Outpatient PHP: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Primarily DBT-based, with structured, interactive therapy groups. Patients are encouraged to engage actively, with therapists as facilitators. It feels like a small, supportive classroom. You get a binder or book of handouts, depending on your group leader. Psych NP visits weekly, but be aware: she is very pink slip-happy. Do not casually mention suicidal thoughts during check-ins or check-outs. Even things said to your therapist in private may be documented and come up later in treatment team meetings. That said, if you need help, please reach out anyway. Safety first. Lunch is provided, or you can bring/order your own. Transportation available within 25 miles, or you can drive yourself. The therapists here are truly life-saving. I cannot overstate the value of these groups. --- Transitions Between Levels of Care: ⭐️⭐️ Going from outpatient to inpatient feels like starting over—you’ll do intake again, and it’s a long process. Starting with inpatient makes transitioning to PHP smoother. Their tech systems are outdated, and it shows. Word is they’re rolling out a new system, but it keeps getting delayed. Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I’ve been to multiple facilities and work in healthcare myself. I still choose Highland Springs for both inpatient and outpatient group care. Yes, it has faults—but it’s one of the best in Northern Ohio. I’ve met people who traveled hours or even from out of state to come here again. It can feel a bit prison-like at times, but most of the rules serve a purpose. The negative reviews often reflect bad experiences with a specific staff member or first-timers who were pink-slipped and didn’t understand the process. If you need help, this is a solid place to start healing. Also, if you have questions regarding pink slip, probate, voluntary status, etc., talk to a THERAPIST not a nurse or a PCA. It's always better to sign voluntarily (even if you were pink-slipped previously, you can sign voluntary at any time) because you can go off the unit for smokes/ fresh air, meals, and rec time. The typical stay is 5-7 days, despite "72-hour hold". I hope you get the healing you deserve! 🫰🏻🫰🏻
