Great place to detox. They have ok food. And limited smoke breaks are great sometimes you get extra if your not an ahole sometimes they'll bring in food. Like Brian one of the counselors/nurses he brought in pizzas, When we had a kick ass group of people in there. Worth a shot if your trying to get sober. GIVE IT A CHANCE

Inpatient & Outpatient: Almost Separate Worlds
Inpatient: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Cons:
If you have medical needs, it's a bit of a hassle. You must supply some of your own medications, which then need to be approved by their pharmacy—this can take time (these would be more specialty meds, not basic stuff). If you're going in voluntarily, print and bring a current med list. If involuntary, try to have a family member bring everything in.
Some staff treat patients like inmates instead of people. It’s not the majority, but enough to be upsetting.
Understaffed, especially in terms of therapists. During my 2024 stays, patients met with therapists almost daily. This year, it was usually just a one-time intake.
Pros:
Therapy-heavy program. Unlike other facilities where therapy means mostly art/music, here you get two structured DBT/CBT-based therapy groups a day plus art and music groups.
Some staff are truly amazing—kind, compassionate, and skilled.
Outdoor access several times a day (for fresh air or smoking).
Food is decent, with substitutions available, snacks, and a Pepsi fountain. Units have flavored water, too.
Beds are relatively comfy. Rooms have showers. Dayrooms are cozy.
You can wear normal clothes, just no strings/belts.
You can have toiletries and makeup (some items are locked up for safety).
The library is well-stocked. There’s also a small workout area.
Depending on the staff, you might be allowed board/card games from family—but the rules can change on a whim.
---
Outpatient PHP: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Primarily DBT-based, with structured, interactive therapy groups. Patients are encouraged to engage actively, with therapists as facilitators. It feels like a small, supportive classroom.
You get a binder or book of handouts, depending on your group leader.
Psych NP visits weekly, but be aware: she is very pink slip-happy. Do not casually mention suicidal thoughts during check-ins or check-outs. Even things said to your therapist in private may be documented and come up later in treatment team meetings.
That said, if you need help, please reach out anyway. Safety first.
Lunch is provided, or you can bring/order your own.
Transportation available within 25 miles, or you can drive yourself.
The therapists here are truly life-saving. I cannot overstate the value of these groups.
---
Transitions Between Levels of Care: ⭐️⭐️
Going from outpatient to inpatient feels like starting over—you’ll do intake again, and it’s a long process.
Starting with inpatient makes transitioning to PHP smoother.
Their tech systems are outdated, and it shows. Word is they’re rolling out a new system, but it keeps getting delayed.
Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I’ve been to multiple facilities and work in healthcare myself. I still choose Highland Springs for both inpatient and outpatient group care. Yes, it has faults—but it’s one of the best in Northern Ohio. I’ve met people who traveled hours or even from out of state to come here again.
It can feel a bit prison-like at times, but most of the rules serve a purpose. The negative reviews often reflect bad experiences with a specific staff member or first-timers who were pink-slipped and didn’t understand the process.
If you need help, this is a solid place to start healing.
Also, if you have questions regarding pink slip, probate, voluntary status, etc., talk to a THERAPIST not a nurse or a PCA. It's always better to sign voluntarily (even if you were pink-slipped previously, you can sign voluntary at any time) because you can go off the unit for smokes/ fresh air, meals, and rec time.
The typical stay is 5-7 days, despite "72-hour hold". I hope you get the healing you deserve! 🫰🏻🫰🏻
