About Howard Brown Health Center

Howard Brown Health Center provides outpatient addiction treatment and primary care services in the uptown neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. General outpatient addiction treatment and intensive outpatient treatment programs are offered, as well as comprehensive mental health assessments and screenings.

Inclusive and Accessible Services

Support is available in Spanish and they have accommodations for people who are hard of hearing or deaf. They have special programs for LGBTQIA+ clients and offer free case management if you are living with HIV/AIDS. You can also get sexual health testing and prevention at the clinic.

They accept self payment, Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance plans. If you don’t have coverage, there’s a sliding fee scale based on your income. Payment help may be available if you call the clinic and ask about options.

Blending Medication, Therapy and Lived Experience

They use medication assisted treatment with buprenorphine and naltrexone to help manage opioid dependency. They understand how past trauma can affect recovery and work to create a safe and supportive treatment environment. Group therapy options include unique techniques like expressive arts, dialectical behavior therapy and mindfulness based harm reduction.

I like that they have peer recovery coaches who use their personal experiences to help you develop your own recovery plan and navigate any challenges you may face. They also offer harm reduction programs that help you take steps to lessen the health and social risks of using opioids, instead of only trying to stop use completely.

Plan Ahead for Billing

Reviews are generally positive, with folks expressing gratitude for the care they received. One client said, “The entire staff has always been so friendly, understanding and respectful.” Some people said they have trouble getting through on the phone, and there can be long wait times. They also recommend meeting with a billing specialist first to better understand costs ahead of time.

At first I thought rehab was just punishment, but it turned out to be a blessing. They had this lil studio setup where I could write and record, and that changed everything for me. The food was better than I expected lol. It wasn’t perfect, some paperwork stuff took time, but overall I grew a lot here. Felt like they actually cared and helped me stay focused on my goals.

I visited my doctor last year for my regular annual checkup. They processed it using the wrong code. It’s a scam hospital and most of their positive reviews are paid.

this place is great, everyone there was super knowledgeable and friendly. their phone system is pretty bad though, so going there right when they open and getting a same day appointment is your best bet. i did that and was even seen early.

Accepted Insurance

Howard Brown Health Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Illinois is designed to help people recover from addiction to a number of substances. The length of each program and its intensity tend to vary, and the plan of care is based on your individual needs.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Great place to Grow

After my injury, I felt lost for years. Howard Brown gave me structure, peace, and a way to give back. The gym time was legit, and I got to mentor too. A lil chaotic at times, but I really felt the growth that happened here.

Didn't know it was possible...

Honestly, I didn't know healing could feel this real. Howard Brown helped me reconnect with me again. The yoga and nutrition stuff?? Actually worked. It wasn’t perfect (sometimes felt a little too busy) but it all worked out. Thank you.

I absolutely loved my first visit here. I felt welcomed here and I got right into my appointment. The doctor and nurse made sure I was comfortable the entire time and answered any questions I had. I tried to explain my situation to the best of my ability and he listened and considered the most likely possibilities with that information. Ultimately I still have to wait for my blood work and the follow-up for my results so it's just time. I felt like they really listened to me. To the entire staff thank you.

I'm not sure what's up with the negative reviews, but I've only had good experiences here. They've taken care of every health problem I've had so far, including getting me some vaccinations I'd been trying to get for almost 10 years, and saw me for $5 a visit while I was waiting for medicaid to come through. Everyone has been respectful. Wait times have been short, though I wouldn't mind waiting if I get good treatment. No misgendering or anything; in fact they helped me get an identity document updated. They saw me on short notice when I needed a sick visit. Given that they do sick visits, I also appreciate that they ask people to mask. I assume it's more for HIV patients' sake, but I'm not going to complain about contracting fewer diseases. I've also had good experiences with the walgreens here. It's a calm environment where the workers seem less overwhelmed and emotionally phoned out than a normal walgreens. When you take 8+ medications like me, there will be mistakes eventually at any pharmacy, but here I'm more confident that I can talk to someone helpful to solve any issues.

I think the negative reviews on here are doing a tremendous disservice to the community. I came here from a 10 year plus relationship with a well regarded practice in the community, but that super well regarded practice didn’t want to know once I got on Medicare. $500.00 for routine testing and my doctor just shrugs his shoulders…$70.00 out of pocket for an office visit…sucks to be me!! Totally different experience at HB Sheridan. This place is nothing but efficient and caring. If you don’t have yourself and your info together, don’t blame the practice.

I went here for the first time January 2025. Everything went very smoothly and quickly. All the staff were friendly and quick. My only complaint would be that I filled everything out online, and had to reanswer during my office visit. I already filled out my prescriptions, previous surgeries, insurance information, etc. So that was a bit of an inconvenience.
