About Sun River Health Jeannette J. Phillips

Sun River Health Jeannette J. Phillips is a community healthcare provider in Peekskill, New York offering primary care along with specialty services like dental care, women’s health and behavioral healthcare. That behavioral health care includes addiction and mental health counseling.

They’re one of over 40 locations in the network of integrated care clinics operated by Sun River Health across Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island. They particularly target vulnerable and underserved populations and folks from the inner city with no resources or access to care. Their commitment to providing compassionate, high-quality and affordable care is one of their defining strengths. They accept Medicaid NY, Medicare and Tricare along with many private insurance plans.

Inclusive and Accessible Care

A sliding fee scale is available if you’re uninsured or underinsured. This lets you pay for care based on your income and family size, ensuring you’re not denied access to quality care due to your inability to pay. This aligns with their status as a Federally Qualified Health Center and their vision to improve the health status of the community through accessible healthcare.

It’s also worth mentioning that Sun River Health strives to create a nonjudgmental and nurturing care environment for all. They even offer tailored services for LGBTQ+ community members.

This particular facility is located on Main Street less than a mile east of Briarcliff-Peekskill Parkway in Peekskill within Westchester County. It’s close to Peekskill Riverfront Green Park and just a few miles from Blue Mountain Reservation and Bear Mountain State Parkway.

Substance Use Recovery and Harm Reduction

Sun River Health Jeannette J. Phillips offers evidence-based outpatient treatment for substance use disorder and co-occurring conditions. They take a harm reduction model of care that supports patients at every stage of recovery with an emphasis on minimizing the life-threatening consequences of substance use disorder.

Their program includes substance use assessments and personalized treatment planning. They also offer medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid addiction recovery. Their MAT program provides a safe place for adults over 18 to get the medication needed to manage withdrawal symptoms under the supervision of experienced clinicians.

The facility also offers individual and peer counseling alongside support groups to provide guidance, foster connection and help clients build coping skills that support long-term recovery. Their harm reduction model also includes Narcan distribution and training to prevent opioid overdose deaths. The folks in this clinic will teach you how to recognize an overdose and properly administer Narcan to save a life.

Before I say what I’m about to say, I’d like to express that there are a handful of super kind individuals who work at Sun River…God bless them and they know who they are. However, I’m writing this review as my last straw. The majority of me and my girlfriend’s experiences, over there, have been incredibly confusing! We began to visit Women’s Health for my girl’s pregnancy and all was going well…but suddenly, our primary doctor stopped showing up. I presumed that she was sick or something and I still don’t actually know what happened to her. I hope that she’s okay, she really is the best. Anyways, since she’s been absent for months, we’ve been thrown a variety of different nurses and midwives - and a lot of them are so lovely, especially the hardworking women who make appointments and all of the receptions. Still, there are those select few who are just pissed to be alive and just want to ruin your day! My girlfriend can’t speak English and it’s a living HELL for her, whenever we visit Sun River. I have to be there 24/7 to translate for her and then to the doctor; and vice-versa. I’m totally okay with that, but the ONE time that I needed to use the restroom, everything went wrong. On this day, every bathroom was locked because, seemingly, every employee went on their lunch breaks. I get it, people need to eat…but why lock the bathrooms? Nobody was around! I was searching for a bathroom in the building for so long that by the time I actually found one and got out, my girlfriend already had the WORST experience - an experience that actually led me to write this review and switch clinics. One of the new nurses who was appointed to us was being extremely rude and unhelpful, with my girlfriend. When I came back, I noticed that my girlfriend was visibly upset and shocked. She’s very timid, so I realized that something wrong had happened when she remained silent with a face of embarrassment. When I came back to the Women’s Health Department, my girlfriend says, “There’s my boyfriend!…he can help m-“ but by the time she could finish her statement, another VERY grumpy and displeasurable woman interrupted her and literally said, “No.” She decided to completely shut me out of their conversation, as if I didn’t deserve to know why my girlfriend was confused and afraid! She then proceeded to talk, exclusively, with my girlfriend while I was beside her, as if I couldn’t understand Spanish - she didn’t look at my eyes ONCE! What kind of place is this?!? Still not knowing what was going on, I’m trying to figure out why my girlfriend was so intimidated. As I turned out, she developed gestational diabetes during this pregnancy, but what they DIDN’T tell me was that the NEW woman had been reprimanding my girl for “supposedly” not taking the 3-hour glucose test, which was entirely false!! I am beside my girlfriend every step of the way - she’s the mother of my baby! I was THERE when she took the test, but regardless, she was punished for all the wrong reasons and she couldn’t even get a word out! While my girlfriend was in the room alone with that new nurse, she was being treated so poorly. The nurse gave her BACK to my girl, only turning around to respond to her questions after the interpreter, (over the phone), finished translating the nurse’s statements - but even the interpreter had a rough time with this woman! I’m telling you…the ONE time that I go to the bathroom, this happens. I never use public restrooms, either. When my girlfriend finally decided to tell me what was going on, everybody was already taking their lunch breaks! I couldn’t even confront anybody, about the situation. It was like that nurse, purposely, avoided me because when I initially saw her, I didn’t even realize that she was the one being rude to my girl! She looked at me and said, “Oh, that’s your boyfriend? Hi!” and smiled at me, like everything was fine. She evaded me so quickly, as if she knew that I would ask her what happened inside of that room. I know that’s a long read, but PLEASE stay away from this place. Management seems to be crooked as HELL!

Accepted Insurance

Sun River Health Jeannette J. Phillips works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Clients in rehab aftercare programs receive a customized portfolio of services designed to promote their sustained sobriety. These clients have completed high-level treatment, are typically exiting detox and/or intensive inpatient care and are reintegrating into their home, workplace, and community. Rehab aftercare services address addiction disease as a chronic condition requiring continuing care. Clients typically work with case managers and recovery teams to access necessary resources, such as peer coaching and 12 step program induction support.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Medical detox involves weaning your body off of addictive substances in a medically supervised environment. If you've become dependent on alcohol and/or drugs, quitting on your own can be uncomfortable and even dangerous. In medically assisted detox, a team of licensed medical professionals will help manage potential withdrawal symptoms, ensuring that you're as safe and comfortable as possible. This process typically takes about 5-7 days, although the length will depend on your individual needs.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you choose drug rehab in New York, you'll participate in a variety of treatments that are designed to help you live a drug-free lifestyle. Common methods of treatment include group, individual, and family counseling, medication management, nutrition, exercise, and management of co-occurring mental health disorders.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Coping with day to day living is a challenge while in addiction recovery. Life skills training helps you learn how to manage daily tasks and deal with stress in healthy ways. This is key to long term recovery.
