About Jacobi Medical Center – Pelham Parkway

Jacobi Medical Center – Pelham Parkway is a mental health, dual diagnosis, and substance use disorder treatment facility that assists adults looking for recovery. Their programming is designed with clinical, scientific, and evidence-based practices to ensure high-quality care.

Jacobi Medical Center – Pelham Parkway offers inpatient, outpatient, medication assisted treatment, and dual diagnosis treatment.

Inpatient treatment is for those who need mental and physical stabilization. This is a highly structured and monitored style of treatment that often incorporates detoxification into the process. Once stabilization has been achieved, counseling, educational classes, and behavioral approaches to treatment can begin. Common elements of inpatient include individual therapy, group therapy, and at times medication or trauma-informed counseling.

The outpatient programming at Jacobi Medical Center- Pelham Parkway is comprised of two programs, which are the medically supervised outpatient program and the outpatient detox program. The medically supervised outpatient program involves individual and group therapy, along with support services. This program is for those who are stable enough to receive treatment without a lot of structure or accountability.

Dual Diagnosis, often referred to as having co-occurring disorders, is when two or more mental health concerns present themselves simultaneously. It is very common for those who struggle with addiction to also have an underlying mental health concern such as anxiety, depression, or a diagnosable psychiatric disorder. Without proper treatment of the mental health issue at hand, getting and staying sober can be difficult. By treating both the substance use disorder and the mental health needs concurrently, a greater chance for long-term sobriety is achieved.

Jacobi Medical Center- Pelham Parkway uses a combination of medication, counseling, and behavioral therapy to treat opioid addiction. This program uses several medications that have proven to be effective in decreasing withdrawal and detox symptoms while supporting long-term recovery by way of continuing treatment under the care of a professional.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare. The Adult Service provides treatment designed to minimize the symptoms and adverse effects of illness, maximize wellness, and promote recovery. Patients ages 18 and older receive individualized services for acute or chronic conditions requiring long or short-term treatment.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you choose drug rehab in New York, you'll participate in a variety of treatments that are designed to help you live a drug-free lifestyle. Common methods of treatment include group, individual, and family counseling, medication management, nutrition, exercise, and management of co-occurring mental health disorders.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. The Smoking Cessation Program is designed to help individuals quit smoking. The program offers individual and group counseling, including a six-week program. Proactive telephone counseling is also available to assist you in remaining tobacco-free.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Horrible hospital Trauma experts my ass over 450 beds and someone with a broken and fractured ankle has to stay in the E.R for 2 days waiting for surgery? I claim to have admitted me the first day at 8am but when asked about hot food menu they say only cold stuff in the ER it works diff down here. So either I’m admitted or I’m not this ain’t purgatory!!!! They say ur off NPO but don’t put it in the system so all the nurses are denying u food the first day watching u throw up the fentanyl from the ambulance and the Oxcy they gave u for pain cause ur on an EMPTY STOMACH!! Same thing for day 2 but they got it approved faster. They don’t have chargers or charging stations that work for ppl who don’t need the hospital phones. I just wanna get my surgery somewhere else. At least they won’t have me as an admitted patient in the system so they can prob charge my insurance like I had a bed, tv, and phone access in a private room Yet I’m out patient in real life in the ER starving and aggravated.

I can't thank the good folks at Jacobi enough. My wife was rushed via ambulance to the ER after fainting and hitting her head on a concrete floor. The doctors, nurses, techs, transport staff, etc. were all wonderful. They were caring, attentive, and thorough, and explained everything clearly. My wife is home, safe and fine now, and I have to say the staff at Jacobi kept us calm during an otherwise scary moment. Public hospitals often get a bad rap. I can't speak to other H+H hospitals, but the care at Jacobi was excellent.

6 years ago I gave birth here completely alone and it was the worst traumatic experience of my life. I was completely alone in excruciating pain and visited the hospital the moment I knew I was in labor and having contractions back to back. They sent me home and told me my water needed to be broken and to come back later. (First time I ever heard a hospital say that to a women in labor) Fast forward several hours later my water broke & I called the ambulance. As soon as I arrived to the hospital they had me sitting in a wheelchair in the emergency room completely ignoring me for over 35 mins or more while I was in labor, having contractions, and dripping wet in my seat from my water broken . I was completely ignored the whole time. When I finally was assigned a room the nurse was very rude and visibly irritated with me from screaming from the pain of the contractions. This was not my first baby but I had never felt such painful contractions in my life and was treated very poorly by that women while I was delivering my baby with no one by my side. Not a single comforting person in that hospital. It was awful. Last, I then needed an emergency c section because of complications which they told me I would be under local anesthesia but instead they gave me general anesthesia and It put me to sleep in the OR with no one to bear witness to my child’s birth not even me. I was looking forward to seeing my baby as soon as she came out but I didn’t get that opportunity because of the general anesthesia they gave me without my permission. So I don’t know what happened or why they would do that to me till this day. Worst experience of my life and very traumatizing for me.

I’ve been going to Jacobi for quite some time now but when I went last week Thursday this was literally the WORST experience I’ve ever had .. first of all I’ve been waiting for PC appointment for the last 4 months I’ve been trying to get answers on my Debilitating migraines I’ve been having for the last 3 months more scared because of my family history with tumors and shunts. DR HARRIET AKUNOR TOTALLY disregarded my complaints stating “everyone gets headaches” everyone’s vision doesn’t get blurry and everyone can’t even have the lights on because the pain is unbearable so I thought that answer was disgusting! She kept trying to push the MIGRAINE MEDS instead of trying to find the root to the problem which I thought was HORRIBLE I’ve been going to Jacobi for over 11 years and I’ll NEVER be back again.

I come to Jacobi because it's a 5 minute walk from me. I walked into the ER at 10am and it's now 1am and I haven't eaten anything all day. I came in with stomach issues and I haven't been eating lately and they suggested I eat. Yet every nurse I asked to bring me something they said they were going to and not one of them ever came back. Finally a little after midnight I asked my friend to bring me some food and when he arrived the front desk reception staff were so rude and arrogant. I was extremely irritated with them because I wish they had that much persistence in bringing patients food as they did not trying to let him in to bring me food. The staff during the day were pretty good. Although I saw a sweet older lady get told her husband had died in the most insensitive way and she was alone. I just wanted to hug her and pray with her. As the day passed, I realized the care got worse. They said they were admitting me at 10pm, only one person came up to me after that. I literally just got into a room 4 hours later(2am). The daytime patients were a total disaster, lots of drug users high out of their mind yelling and screaming, angry patients tired of waiting and several people handcuffed to beds and their feet were handcuffed together accompanied by police officers. Never experienced anyone at all, yet so many people in one day coming to the hospital in handcuffs. I have experienced the drug users and angry patients on previous visits here. Needless to say, after several people over the years telling me this is the worse hospital, I finally opened my eyes to see it over the convenience of being so close to me . *UPDATE* The experience got worse. They admitted me and said I would see a GI doctor. I'm now here 2 days and they are saying I won't see a GI doctor for another 2 days. Only one doctor met with me today(which 5 students with him), he said he was gonna do 2 test(stool and blood) never saw him again today. The dietician came and talked to me as well. I asked her do they have any plant based ensure or protein shakes, she said she would check yet never heard back. I asked the nurse to ask her what was the outcome and never heard anything from the nurse again either. You kind of don't want to ask again because they seem like you are bothering them to do their job. My bed is leaning to the right(seems like I'm gonna fall out, along with being so uncomfortable and the sheets have holes in them and after two days I still don't even have a pillow. I realized they are all taking their time to extend everyone's stay. I've heard about 10 people ask to be discharged because they didn't feel they were getting help they needed. They instill fear in them by saying it's not under doctors orders, they suggest you stay and if you die it's not their fault. Then say they must sign a AMA. SMH

My scheduled appointment with Dra Avni was excellent. She covered all possibilities of my very first Vertigo attack. She is a very efficient and skilled Primary Care Physician. So thankful to have her attend to my health issues. All other health care providers from the reception to phlebotomy are all very professional, respectful and friendly.

This is only a review of the medical records department only..My son mother who was an emplyee of this hospital passwd away at Jacobi April 23rd 2025..My son and I went to medical records to inquire about receiving her complete medical records, after dealing with 3 women working there,we referred to Mr Marcel Tay Assistant Manager..Upon speaking to Mr Tay,who by the way is quite professional and a gentleman, which made the exchanges between us,meaning my son and I,quite bearable due to my son ,lost of his mother...Mr Tay expedited the medical to be sent to us..We received the medical records quickly thru USPS..Unfortunately the Imaging results were missing..Me and my son return to Jacobi Hospital and went back to Medical Records.WE were met by one of the 3 ladies working there,an old hispanic lady, she told us " i told you last week that you have to call Varisma for the Imaging result or any missing documents,,That was a bold faced lie from this women, she never told us that, actually she ran away and complained that printing all the medical records of my son mother, who worked at Jacobi as a Care Manager, was too much!!!!Anyways me and my son return to Jacobi for the Imaging results. There was a bit of confusion about getting the imaging results, but after Mr Tay and Miss Gail intervention,we were told that an outside firm comes once a week to transfer imaging to CD.,,I want to commend Mr Tay and Miss GAIL for their professionalism in this case,,Myself being a professional, i always give credit to people who do their work in a professional way,,we picked up the imaging results on CD's from Mr Tay in is office..Again Thank you Mr Tay and Miss Gail for your intervention,,,The only negative comment i have is about he old hispanic lady who works in medical records,,Her behavior on time we went to request the imaging results was not professional and i have adressed it to MR Tay and Miss Gail, she was obnoxious and rude making out of place comments, although subtle but directed to me and my son,,Disgusting really disgusting,,i did not reply to her comments while i was sitting in medical records for an update..She does not represent the values i saw in Mr Tay and Miss GAil..Maybe she needs to retire,,also she work till 4pm,but i saw her leave at 3:50 pm not 4 pm...Lady your comments of saying "wow its 3:15 pm almost 4pm before and other sneazy remarks towards me and my son were not appreciated,i could have replied to you being a native new yorker, but i kept my cool and adresss the issue to your superiors,,,again this is a review of my experience with Jacobi Hospital Medical Records solely..RON FERNANDEZ

I just wana say this hospital decades ago I didn’t like - but whoever or whatever changed this hospital direction has done a amazing job- from the cleaners to the PCA nurses and doctors ya have done an amazing change - my son came in suffering and the doctor told me he ain’t leaving till we know exactly what’s causing his issues - look how smart this doctor was - not only did he give my son a catscan but he gave him a sonogram to his intestines- they couldn’t find nothing there so he sat back for some hours took some stool and ruled out everything 🙄 my son caught a virus from not washing his hands 😳😥 it’s like the brains it takes to really calculate everything he did monitor him and to rule out everything getting the type of virus and identifying what actually was the cause to me is great work - I hate when I go to a doctor and they just tell me “oh he got a virus” - no I got what type of virus and how it was possible for him to have gotten it - it’s doctors like that that prevent the spread of viruses in children which can cause fevers and give more developmental issues / learning about what can fevers do in children during their developmental stages it kinda makes you more precaution and using universal hand washing at all times - im so happy that I actually came here cause I was able to see a pattern in a lot of kids I’ve watched get sick / thank you Jacobi you guys make a hell of a team in the bx ❤️🤞🏽
