About Michigan Behavioral Medicine

Michigan Behavioral Medicine is located on Crooks Road in Troy, Michigan. This treatment facility helps individuals of all ages with mental health concerns. Services are offered in an outpatient setting and most major insurance plans are accepted here including Medicaid.

Evidence Based Care

Michigan Behavioral Medicine employs evidence based clinical methods for mental health and addiction treatment. Their therapeutic approaches include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.

Depression can sometimes be a major cause of substance use issues. Two unique therapeutic options available at this facility are Spravato and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. Both treatments are designed to help heal depression that hasn’t responded to traditional talk therapy.

The facility has staff members who are board certified in addiction psychiatry and certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. These certifications mean you’ll work with staff members trained in dealing with mental health or substance abuse disorders.

Referrals to More Intensive Treatment

In some cases, clients may need more intensive services that Michigan Behavioral Health Medicine does not provide. The facility may be able to refer you to addiction treatment facilities that provide residential treatment or intensive outpatient care.

A great thing about Michigan Behavioral Health’s location is it’s less than a half hour away from Detroit. In between your treatment sessions, you can enjoy some great sober activities that the city has to offer. One option you might like considering is taking a walk at the Detroit Riverfront.

Well, Dr. Joseph was not a good fit for me. Maybe he's a good doctor, but I didn't stay long enough to find out. I didnt care for my brief experience though. My therapist (Tom) appears to be a straight-shooter, a good therapist I think, but the place he works at pretty much treats people like they're at the DMV. As others have mentioned, their scheduling and billing practices, as well as their office staff are VERY poor. Negative five stars for that - only Tom earns them a star. Michigan Behavioral Medicine, if you're listing: you're working with emotionally vulnerable people here - of all people, you should understand that. We're hurt, we're scared, we're anxious...whatever the case may be, but we're not at our best. You can't just treat people like you're a collection agency and then expect them to trust you after that. Your staff as a whole is abrasive and unhelpful (though I have seen a few exceptions). Your billing is opaque. Your scheduling is chaotic. There's no patient portal to keep track of billing and appointments (it's 2025 guys). All in all, dealing with this place has been a source of anxiety, not a relief from it.

Wish I could give a big fat ZERO. Absolutely the worst experience. Billing issues. Not running new and provided insurance. Had 9 sessions that did not get charged to appropriate insurance. 3 insurance changes while going to this practice and screwed every time there was a change. Separated from wife and was not getting statements. They never picked up the phone to call. Kept the sessions rolling and never letting me know of a balance that does shouldn t exist. Went round and round, once realized, with the practice management providing the previous insurance and current to run for the sessions. Even called my insurance to ensure they could still run the claim. More back and forth and ran wrong ins again. The incompetence with this practice is shocking. I ended up paying $1000 to keep this off my credit report. Had no choice. I have NEVER been without insurance in my entire adult life and these people forced me to pay for something my insurance. Over with a $20 co-pay... These people including Dr. Palouse couldn t care less. This is how they treat the mentally challenged and I was a client for 4 years. Forced to start over from scratch with new team. Total waste of money and time. And good luck with any appointment that runs on time. Even show up to appointment and they claim there is nI appointment. Just horrible scheduling on top of everything else.. As well, you will eventually experience the rude and high turnover office staff that are truly incapable of appropriate customer service, working through billing issues or insurance issues. I watched these people treat some very challenged individuals with very little tact! Steer clear from Dr. Palouse and his circus at Michigan Behavioral Medicine. Count yourself lucky if your reading this review.

Accepted Insurance

Michigan Behavioral Medicine works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive way of stimulating the brain in order to help with symptoms of depression. TMS uses elecromagnetic coils to deliver magnetic pulses to the brain, which can improve a patient's mood and ease depression. It's often used when other depression treatments haven't worked.

Dr. P is rude and misdiagnosed pstd for mania. You can be stuck up if you’re actually accurate with your diagnosis. Charged me 2 years later for a no show to an appt in livonia that I probably never scheduled bc I saw him at Troy. It’s weird that I am paying for the incompetence of other doctors. That is the reason for this review after 2 years seeing him. Hey, I’m passive aggressive with emotional dysfunction but the doctor would know that if he did his evaluation correctly.

The amount of times my husband has gone to Dr. Joseph’s office and has had a messed up scheduling error is too many times. Dr. Joseph tends to be “out of the office” for the day my husband has waited weeks for his next appt. Dr. Joseph also forgets to approve refills for his medicine, therefore not servicing my husband under his practice. This has happened more than once. It seems that the scheduler is really terrible at booking his appointments, therefore making excuses for their mistake. Last minute decisions by the doctor as well for being out of office for the day, when his patients waits for him when he’s nonetheless only in office one or two days a week. Turning down a patient who goes out of their way to get to an appt that was wrongfully scheduled is also preposterous and should be seen regardless. Mental health care is not to be messed with like this. It affects family members greatly when the patient isn’t cared for. Thus defeating the purpose of caring for them with serious medications which under lethal law, should not be messed with due to missed appointments and side effects being suffered due to the office practitioner’s mistakes. Do better. Shame on your office management, and neglect on patients when they need you the most. Fire your office staff who can’t keep up.

I reached out several times for an appointment. Once I received a call from a staff member, she was not very helpful and slightly rude. I asked if she could email information over being that I was at work and I still have not received the availability information. I have a very difficult work schedule and don't want to waste anyone's time if there is not availability that fits my schedule.

You’re better off shooting your own kid in the face then allowing certain staff members near your child, Social worker Anne especially neglects children and purposely disregards any actual care for patients. don’t trust her with your kids. Also techs at this building are allowed to run around and bully your children. Plenty of incidents happen every day and the Risk Manager does nothing about it.
