About Richmond University Medical Center – Main Hospital

Located in Staten Island, New York, the Richmond University Medical Center – Main Hospital is the thriving heart of the RUMC network. They provide inpatient and outpatient substance abuse care for adults and adolescents ages 3 to 18.

As their main campus, it boasts over 440 beds to provide a full range of care. Along with psychiatric care for mood and behavioral disorders, they also offer emergency health services, elective and emergency surgeries, and advanced wound care. Their inpatient programs have 30 adult beds and 10 adolescent beds.

The RUMC Main Hospital is the only inpatient psychiatric care center for adolescents in the region. They provide around the clock care for children experiencing mental health disorders or addiction. The caring team creates a loving and safe environment for adolescents to heal in.

As part of their addiction treatment program, they offer medication management, individual and group therapy, family education, and electroconvulsive therapy. ECT uses controlled electrical currents to make certain parts of your brain fire rapidly. This can help those areas work more effectively, helping you overcome medication resistant mental health concerns that contribute to substance use.

Admitted to the ER and the nightmare began . Spent the weekend in the hallway due to overcrowding . The Doctors and the nurses were caring professionals forced to work in appalling conditions . Disengaged management was clearly evident . Finally admitted to a room and the hall workers were rude and inattentive. Patient affairs works from 8-4 good luck after hours. Never would have come to this hospital but the ambulance driver insisted because of proximity !

This hospital is a disgrace. The staff is hardly trained on responding to anyone already in distress and often escalate the situation. They want to be on the same level as a patient suffering physical and or emotional distress asking for help, on the phone they rush and refuse to listen, this is all on a recorded line btw so you don t have to take my words for it if you re staff and reading this you can just check your own records. Of course people become belligerent and raise their voice when they re in acute pain etc and attempting to get help but you people refuse to have empathy and listen or grab someone who does. I think the entire building needs better sensitivity training I was trained to deal with people in distress better while working retail. Many Many things can be prevented when you listen to people with respect and do not rush them, VERY rudely, off the phone while they re attempting to get help, the fact that one of your staff told me on the phone if I didn t not lower my voice she would not help me after constantly interrupting me and raising her voice herself is absolutely preposterous, we were both equally pound and only one of us was clocked in at work during that interaction. When I go to other hospitals and clinics the staff usually makes a face when RUMC is mentioned as they already know what they re gonna be dealing with. I had to pull teeth to have paper work faxed to my specialty doctor even tho it was this hospital that made the referral and all they had to do was correct information on the paper and send it. This should ve have taken 3 people and a fight and the other Clinc stepping in. Absolutely do better.

This is referring to my very unfortunate experience after needing observation due to gastric issues. The doctors were great. The nurses. I begged for a gowns to cover my back too. They just never got it. I covered myself with a sheet. Simple thing like that they couldn t do. The nurse was training and to say the experience was painful is underselling it. Night nurse, after horrible day of vomit and diarrhea. I asked her repeatedly for water. Every 20 min. And she couldn te be bothered til 23 min later. This is why I try my best to go to SIUH.

Accepted Insurance

Richmond University Medical Center – Main Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I went here for almost a year, and the people that worked here treated me well. They could improve lots of things, starting with the accommodations, but they are good.

The emergency room wait in registration process is outrageous they don’t go by order in god forbid it’s life threatening you’ll still be waiting. Workers so little to no care never have an answer for you, And the back medical beds line the hallways with people unattended to. This hospital is a trap due to them not attending to ppl on a timely bases ppl tend to leave without being seen. But them get held by security on they way out the door. Definitely More students working here than experience doctors, nurses, etc workers. Really wish I can give a 0. This place needs to be demolished.

Forced to go to RUMC by EMS...my dad is 91 years old and had pneumonia and urinary infection...he spent 2 days on a gurney in the ER...he was finally put in a room and then he was verbally abused by one of the nurses because his outside cathera came loose n his bed was wet. He tried to explain to her that it just came loose, but she called him a liar, and handed him a urinal and when he told her he has a tremor, she told him that was his problem. A complaint was made. They were no help setting up any services. I couldn't wait to get him out of there...JUST A WARNING TO EVERYONE...DO NOT GO TO RUMC!!!!!

Unprofessional nurses. Took my mom here to get a CT scan because she fell & witnessed the overnight nurses being unprofessional with patients. They were laughing & disgusted by older patients who were clearly mentally unstable or in need of assistance. I would never trust my mom to be here on her own from what I have witnessed.

Nurses like Jess are AMAZING. BUT if you are actually experiencing an emergency, you likely get worse or die walking into the emergency room because there’s NEVER anyone at the desk EVER. I have come 3 times in the last 4 months and all three I waited 5+ minutes in the waiting room of the ER before anyone addressed me. If you are experiencing a major cardiac event it takes on average 5-15 minutes to die, or have irreparable heart damage, this ER will ensure your odds of survival are reduced by their lack of staff and urgency in a department where people are seeking immediate emergency medical attention.

kidnapped by EMS and taken here against my will for 9 hours. there was no soap in the bathrooms and was forced to pee on my hand with no soap . the entire time i was told i was speaking to a doctor it was a nurse practitioner who laughed at the idea i would have to stay there indefinitely if they can't reach my contacts. released after they got ahold of my mom after 9 hours. they didn't explain anything to her on the phone, just to come pick me up. i think they were annoyed about holding me. the entire time i was there felt like being a caged animal, the holding cell of sorts had no walls or windows and i was in there with severely mentally ill people. i am not. they then expected me to pay for being kidnapped. the entire experience was traumatic and if anything rumc should be paying for me to have therapy for the ptsd caused by this hospital
