About Richmond University Medical Center – Main Hospital

As their main campus, it boasts over 440 beds to provide a full range of care. Along with psychiatric care for mood and behavioral disorders, they also offer emergency health services, elective and emergency surgeries, and advanced wound care. Their inpatient programs have 30 adult beds and 10 adolescent beds.

The RUMC Main Hospital is the only inpatient psychiatric care center for adolescents in the region. They provide around the clock care for children experiencing mental health disorders or addiction. The caring team creates a loving and safe environment for adolescents to heal in.

As part of their addiction treatment program, they offer medication management, individual and group therapy, family education, and electroconvulsive therapy. ECT uses controlled electrical currents to make certain parts of your brain fire rapidly. This can help those areas work more effectively, helping you overcome medication resistant mental health concerns that contribute to substance use.

You’re better off drinking tea and praying to whoever you pray to before coming here. I came here due to some DV injuries and was left for several hours in pain. I had a male doctor yell “WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO” which scared me due to my anxiety from abuse. They’re slow, unprofessional, and should be shut down.

My mother was admitted to the Emergency Room at Richmond University Hospital. She has Covid and had trouble breathing. We were there for 12 hours without them even giving her a sip of water. They gave her a treatment of Prednisone and Tylenol along with a Nebulizer. She is 87 years old and they wanted to keep her for observation. She started feeling better and we left the Hospital. The Dr in charge sent a prescription to the Pharmacy. The Dr's name is Muray Kurtca's. The pharmacist called me to tell me that this medication is life threatening and could cause major complications or even death if mixed with one of her existing medications which is a blood thinner. The Dr had a list of all medications that my mother was taking and still prescribed something that could kill her. Do not go there. They do not know what they are doing. I'm so glad I took her home.

Went to the er bc my doctor wanted them to rule out a blood clot. The dr that attended me was so sweet and kind but that’s about it. There was a nasty rude obnoxious nurse who kept laughing so hard at the nurses station at midnight. It was very inconsiderate and just an overall horrible experience I didn’t even get to rest bc she wouldn’t stop cackling loudly and nobody told her to lower her voice.

Accepted Insurance

Richmond University Medical Center – Main Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I went here for almost a year, and the people that worked here treated me well. They could improve lots of things, starting with the accommodations, but they are good.

This Emergency Room is absolutely clean, but I’m very disappointed because I came in at 5:20am the nurses deliberately left me in my spot until shift change, then at 6:45 I went to them to explain I’ve been here not one person came to see me they said they have an emergency to attend to and you’ll have to wait until shift change…this entire time they were sitting on there personal phones and all cozy at the nursing station, coming from health care as my profession this is very disappointing.

I am so dismayed, yesterday I went to the emergency room, I really felt very bad, we entered an emergency room, and BEFORE DOING ANY EXAM OR STUDY a man came in to take our information and told me that I had to pay almost $ 500 out of obligation, I told him if I could pay at home, since I was there for an EMERGENCY. He told me no, that if he sent me the bill to my house "Nobody pays" I told him that I did not have that amount of money that I needed with medical insurance, to which he told me that it was impossible, that the insurance could cover me for the next emergency, I know and I am sure that anywhere in the world this is illegal, you cannot deny medical assistance in emergencies to ANYONE. so much was their obligation that I had to pay at least half, since otherwise THEY WOULD NOT TEND TO ME. Then the lady from insurance came to help me, but it was too late I HAD ALREADY PAID, I don’t understand how this first hospital exists that does this to me and how horrible, I mean, people who don’t have a penny? What do they do? Do they throw them out of the hospital!??? This seems horrible to me, by the way, she told me that what I was paying would cover me when I come to see my medicine and guess what?? I HAVE TO PAY IT, the pharmacy just told me… this hospital should not allow this, yesterday $214 today $29 I repeated that I did not have a job. I am alone in this country, how horrible…

I came to Labor and Delivery with early contractions, and the team — especially the incredible nurses — made everything go smoothly. Tomorrow I’ll already be home, and I’ll gladly return at my scheduled time. This was my second experience here (the first in 2023 with my daughter), and both times I felt safe, cared for, and fully supported by the most wonderful team.

I’m honestly shocked by how rude the person answering the phone was. If that’s how they speak to people over the phone, I can’t imagine how patients are treated in person. The lack of basic courtesy and professionalism is unacceptable—especially in a healthcare setting where compassion and respect should be the norm. I hope this issue is taken seriously, because no one should be treated that way when simply trying to get information or assistance.
