About Rockingham Memorial Hospital – Behavioral Health Services

Including families in the treatment process is a big part of this hospital’s approach. And it makes sense. Strong support systems and community are a huge factor in successful long-term recovery. They also partner closely with local nonprofits and schools to offer further services and support community wellbeing.

Support is also offered for co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, depression, eating disorders, PTSD, and more. There’s also 24-hour crisis care on hand, as well as counseling services to offer clients an outlet and a safe space to understand and talk about their issues.

Rockingham also provides a partial hospitalization program that includes individual, group, and family therapy, educational services, and stress management support within a structured psychiatric program and setting. Clients can return home at the end of each day to touch base and connect with their family or support system. These services are offered for up to six hours per day, five days a week.

When I visited my family in Harrisonburg in August. I had some medical problems. I went to the emergency here. I was treated very good. I spent one night at the hospital. All nurses and doctors helped me fast and did their best. Thank you very much.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Clients in an intensive outpatient rehab (IOP) benefit from robust support but often do not require the high-level supervision and round-the-clock clinical care provided in an inpatient setting. Clients engage in multiple therapeutic sessions weekly, with most programs requiring between nine and 20 treatment hours per week. Intensive outpatient rehabs provide a wide array of evidence-based services, including addiction counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, holistic therapies, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers a structured environment for intensive treatment of behavioral and substance use disorders. PHP treatment can consist of sessions ranging from 6-8 hours per day for an average of 90 days. You can often expect to engage in behavioral therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and receive medication. PHP treatment is often covered either fully or partially by insurance providers.

Clients participating in a rehab aftercare program receive comprehensive and customized support as they leave high-intensity treatment, reintegrate into their community, and focus on maintaining their sobriety. These programs offer a wide variety of services to align with the client's unique and evolving needs, often including medical, mental health, and social service program referrals. Clients typically develop their drug rehab aftercare plan in conjunction with their case manager and care team.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I wish I could give to this place 0 stars, they made wait for more than 3 hours to attended me, I don't recommend to come here unless you like waiting 7 hours or more to be seen by a doctor, the staff are nice but that does not make up for the lack of organization needed in ... Read More

I had some work done on my knee and I was really pleased with every step of the way. The front desk was always sweet and helpful. I got a second opinion from another surgeon at the hospital, which was very helpful and reassuring for me. The surgery day couldn't have gone better. I was irrationally worked up about a lot of things and each nurse / staff was able to provide comfort and reassurance. I wanted to thank everyone and I want to include Charlotte and the anaesthesiologist (i'm sorry i forget his name) for their exceptional support.

Response from the owner

⚠️ DO NOT LET YOUR FAMILY GO TO THIS BEHAVIORAL HEALTH UNIT IF YOU VALUE THEIR WELLBEING ⚠️ October 2025 My experience at this unit was unsafe, unprofessional, and deeply distressing. As a hospital employee myself I was fully aware of every single thing being done to and around me and the ethical implications of it. My husband decided to call the local CSB to help get me discharged after I could not get ahold of a single nurse! Nurses station was left completely empty multiple times! He had to call downstairs twice to send someone to the unit before anyone responded. During the second call, he was told false and dangerous information about my medications. He was on the phone with me and the nurse at the same time (they did not realize we could both hear the conversation). including the statement that ‘the unit isn’t passing medication that evening’. The guy on the phone also seemed kept giggling?? Which was not funny to the husband who received this call. Earlier that night, I was left completely alone during a four-hour panic attack. Staff members came into the room to drop things off, like a tray of food and take my blood pressure, but did not offer help, bring the PRN medication I was prescribed, or attempt to comfort me. One simply said, “Why are you crying?” and another told me, “Take the pillow off your face.” When I was discharged, I discovered that my chart contained at least 23 false statements including bizarre claims about identity theft and withdrawal symptoms. It looks like they had copy-pasted another persons story into my chart. I was there solely for anxiety stabilization and support, not for substance withdrawal or legal issues. Since discharge, I have made multiple attempts to obtain clarification or see if they have had some type of computer issues that may have caused this! I have been denied the opportunity to speak with anyone capable of saying if the charts on the unit are accurate three times. One staff member told me he “would assume everything in your chart is meant to be there.” But that’s the same provider who admitted he has never read an AMA form during my discharge. I was promised a callback from the charge nurse and waited by the phone for over six hours, with no response. When I called again, I was told to “call back during business hours” and was refused the nursing supervisor’s contact information. This unit shows a complete lack of empathy, accountability, and patient advocacy. If your loved one is struggling, please find another facility! This one made my condition worse, not better and I have heard similar stories from every other patient I’ve spoken to of this unit. __________________________________ Old review: (Emergency room) I have NEVER had a good experience here. All of their staff is dismissive and looks down on all their patients. I was discharged after hours of chest pain and their staff refused to discuss the results of my EKG with me. If I was bleeding out in their waiting room I would call someone to pick me up to take me somewhere else. Do not trust these people with your families. EDIT: you're not sorry! You've continually allowed patients to be abused at this hospital. Look at the reviews. Calling some random person isn't gonna fix the amount of people afraid to go get medical help because of the incompetence of YOUR doctors
