About Ascension St. Thomas Behavioral Health Hospital

Ascension St. Thomas Behavioral Health Hospital is located in Nashville, Tennessee, about one mile from I-65.  Located near downtown Nashville and Centennial Park, clients in the outpatient program can find many sober activities for relaxation and reflection between treatment sessions.

The hospital offers inpatient and outpatient treatment programs. The hospital accepts insurance from most major providers, and they’ll work with you to verify your coverage prior to admission. They offer self pay options and financial assistance to eligible individuals.

Stabilization, Safety, and Transition

The hospital provides mental and emotional healthcare for adults and specialized inpatient treatment programs for seniors. They have co-occurring mental health and addiction disorder programs working  with many types of addiction, including alcohol, opioids, heroin, meth, and benzodiazepines.

The inpatient program offers 24/7 nursing care in a secure and supportive environment.  The multidisciplinary inpatient team focuses on stabilization and safety as they work to help you transition to outpatient care as quickly as possible. They provide highly structured outpatient programs like partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) and intensive outpatient programs (IOPs).

Clients have reported that the clinical teams were supportive and the staff were professional and caring. Other clients have mentioned their positive outcomes regarding their mental health.

Electroconvulsive Therapy Program

The hospital offers an electroconvulsive therapy program (ECT) for clients with severe psychiatric and mental health disorders. ECT may be done on an inpatient or outpatient basis. Most clients engage in 10-12 sessions, and though the process only takes a few minutes, you’ll need to leave about two hours for each session.

ECT changes chemicals in the brain and helps reduce symptoms stemming from some mental health disorders, which may be effective for individuals experiencing treatment resistant depression.

This is a post for help! My son is being held captive at this location. He was transferred there from general hospital Nashville needing alcohol relapse detox. ONLY. He is now sober and trying to transfer to a recovery program and they refuse to let him go If there is anyone reading this review who has amy advice on getting my some released. Please post. I have never heard of such incompetence or cruelty to keep someone who simply needed to detox and reconnect with a social worker being denied patient rights to determine care. This has to be some type of HIPPA violation. Do NOT allow anyone you love to be admitted to this dangerous institution

This place is worse than Hell itself. The staff, food, living conditions, doctors - everything is absolutely abysmal. I truly have no words. I would love for a company rep to contact me so we can arrange payment for the years of therapy I will now need after this experience.

This facility might be named after a Saint, but the only miracle here is the fact they are still open! It truly is astonishing they have not been shut down. If you or your family member are struggling with mental health you will surely emerge from here WORSE than when you arrived. They will strip you of your dignity and rights. The nurses are all rude, lazy and uncaring. If you get lucky you will find a select few who will treat you with some human decency. The “doctors” in power are your only hope for support, yet they are WORSE than the nurses. I have never witnessed a more uncaring, indifferent, detached individual. Daniel, who I believe has the unworthy title of “nurse practitioner”, has the mental capacity of a clam, and I pray for any individual under his care. Dr. Yusefji, the main doctor, is even worse and her only goal is pushing medication on you like she is a peddler. You’ll be lucky to get even a word in with her before she starts arguing with you or walking out of the room. Your only hope from there will be Jacob, the patient advocate, who will then proceed to refuse eye contact with you while “investigating” these claims of mistreatment, and give you absolutely 0 reassurance that these issues will be handled. Nothing will come from your reports or protest for better care, no updates, or staff corrections. So from there you are left to just play their game and walk on eggshells, all while trying to hold a good composure while being at your lowest, hoping none of the nurses will neglect you to the point you must speak up for yourself…because, if that happens you might get sent to the “downstairs” ward - a punishment. All the staff here needs to be audited and most need to be reported and removed from this line of work. It is sad that patients must unsure such uncaring, unprofessional individuals while already struggling with mental health. We are not animals, and we are not lesser than.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

This facility has been an extremely distressing experience for my family. My loved one, a voluntary patient with a history of epilepsy, was prescribed medication that we later learned can lower seizure thresholds. Despite major improvement and support from several staff members for discharge, the attending psychiatrist has repeatedly delayed release, citing “legal” or medication-related issues. Communication with the care team has been poor, and requests for timely discharge have been denied without clear written explanation. We have contacted the Tennessee Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services (TDMHSAS) and are following up on patient-rights concerns. Based on our experience, I urge families to research other facilities and to stay closely involved in their loved one’s care.
