About Stonewater Adolescent Recovery Center

Stonewater Adolescent Recovery Center is a Joint Commission accredited substance use and co occurring (dual diagnosis) disorder treatment center for adolescents. The facility is located on a 65 acre campus in Oxford, Mississippi, and offers 60 and 90 day residential treatment programs for teen boys. While there is no residential program for girls, they can get help through the virtual intensive outpatient program.

The facility accepts most major insurance including Aetna, Cigna, and TRICARE. Because they have an accredited school on the campus, your school district may pay some of the treatment costs.

The inpatient treatment program begins with psychological testing. This provides clinicians with clarity regarding the diagnosis and can help detect any co occurring mental health disorders that need to be treated alongside the substance use disorder.

One thing that’s unique is that they offer medical detox for teens. Many medical detox programs are for adults only. Detox is the process of ridding the body of the substances used and the detox program is medically supervised by a physician. If necessary, clients can have approved medications to ease withdrawal symptoms. Detox is an important first step so the teen can fully participate and integrate throughout the rest of the program.

Because the inpatient program is for teen boys only, the staff understands the specific medical, behavioral, clinical, and academic needs of the teens. They offer a home like environment and give the kids opportunities for outside recreation and experiential therapies like yoga, equine and adventure therapy.

The staff encourages the family to participate in the treatment process. Both siblings and parents will have the opportunity to get involved. After completion of the inpatient program, teens leave with a comprehensive support plan for continued recovery and lifelong sobriety.

The virtual IOP is also unique. Not only can you participate from home, but the program is designed to address issues faced by today’s teens. For example they discuss tech addiction and social media as well as gaming and the use of pornography. The IOP includes individual and group therapy sessions along with virtual family services.

Stonewater truly cares about the boys and families who participate in their recovery program. Dropping our son off, sight unseen, was the hardest thing to do in a dark time, but Stonewater staff supported us every step of the way and put our fears at ease. Communication was prompt, caring and informative, as we navigated residential treatment center operations. What appealed to me when making a decision was first- that it was family owned and operated by those in recovery or affected by addiction and or mental health needs, second- there are a max of 14 adolescent males at a time, third- it has a program ending duration of 90 days, fourth- it’s on 65 beautiful acres, fifth- staff were interested in my son’s specific needs and if he was a good fit, sixth- Stonewater’s emphasis on family participation is key throughout the entire process of healing and seventh- guidance for families to research and develop after care plans from the start to have a plan in place upon release. My son feels it’s one of the best facilities in the country, he’s not felt this healthy in years and says it changed his life. To hear his testimony speaks volumes to the quality of care Stonewater provides.

Hi Natalie, thank you for taking the time to share this. It is brave to send your child to a residential program to get another layer of support and it is also brave to share that experience so that other parents know they aren't alone. Thank you for supporting other parents in this way!

Sending my 16 year old son to Stonewater was the most frightening thing I’ve ever done. With all the negative publicity circulating in the media about the “Troubled Teen Industry” or “TTI”, I knew that sending my son to Stonewater could be the end of our relationship. However, I also knew that absent a residential recovery center, my son’s life would likely be very short. As a resident of Portland, Oregon, we live in a city where hard drugs were decriminalized in 2020. This, paired with social media algorithms that push drug dealers to children’s recommended followers, and missed social and educational opportunities from when the state of Oregon shut down public schools for nearly two years during COVID, left my son with deficiencies and vulnerabilities that quickly pulled him into the world of drugs and alcohol before I could understand what was happening to him. I knew we had to act fast or my son would be dead. We removed our son from the city of Portland and removed all access to electronics while working quickly with a family consultant (Northlight Family Services) to find the right residential treatment center for him. Our family was not excited about sending him to Mississippi, but we felt it was the right fit, and getting recovery right the first time is essential for long -term well being. I could not be more pleased with this decision. For three months, Stonewater cared for my son 24/7 and provided the medical, mental, spiritual, physical and social support he needed (and that we could not possibly sufficiently provide) during this devastating and challenging time. He became sober, he was put on the correct medications for his mental health needs, attended recovery program meetings off campus, had extensive individual therapy and family therapy (via zoom) and connected with peers who were willing to hold him accountable. As he worked his recovery, the staff at Stonewater maintained constant contact with our family. We spoke with his therapist weekly, we got weekly updates from the nurse practitioner who administers medications, we received calls from the psychiatrist when necessary, and we had weekly calls with the on-site educator. Additionally, we had bi-weekly calls with a family support coordinator who helped us plan for his return home. My son is on a trajectory of continued recovery and finding his purpose in life. His relationships with family members are improved. He is grateful for his time at Stonewater, and for the recovery that began there. Admittedly, it was not easy but do not be fooled by the negative publicity you’ll fine online regarding this industry. Holding kids accountable is not the same as shaming them. Doing chores is not slave labor. Having expectations is not the same as oppression. These are all life skills that must be learned in order to become a well-adjusted contributing member of society. If your son is headed down a path of destruction with drugs and/or alcohol, I would highly recommend sending him to Stonewater. It was worth every cent and I do not for a moment regret this decision.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Clients stepping down from inpatient care or who prefer to remain at home while receiving intensive treatment may choose to enroll in an outpatient rehab. Outpatient day treatment, partial hospitalization (PHP), and intensive outpatient programs (IOP) are designed for clients requiring more robust supervision and daily treatment. Standard outpatient services enable clients to attend addiction counseling and recovery education throughout the week, with many centers offering weekend, night, and evening sessions to accommodate clients' work and family schedules.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements. Stonewater Adolescent Recovery Center is a safe place where adolescents can receive addiction treatment with 24/7 support to develop the skills and abilities necessary to improve health, wellness, independence, continuing education and motivation to reach their full potential in a life of recovery. As teens come to understand substance use disorders and negative lifestyle influences, a space removed from these unhealthy external influences is imperative. At Stonewater, Residential Treatment is conducted in a secure, compassionate and motivational space to fully equip your adolescent for the journey ahead.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
The Intensive Outpatient Program at Stonewater is a structured outpatient program designed to work with adolescents therapeutically while they are living autonomously or in a family environment. The Stonewater Intensive Outpatient Program incorporates evidenced-based practices such as Individual Therapy, Group Therapy, Group Education, Family Therapy and experiential therapies while allowing the adolescent to return home daily. The adolescent continues to have access to school, work or other activities while pursuing recovery goals as part of the IOP Individual Service Plan. IOP at Stonewater lasts up to 15 weeks and includes three meetings each week, for a minimum of 3 hours per day. The program is offered in convenient morning or afternoon sessions so that the adolescent can still participate in other daily external activities. IOP assists in driving successful community living and promotes positive outcomes for future success.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
During early phases of recovery, 24-hour clinical care in Mississippi provides several advantages that can improve recovery outcomes. First, medical staff can prescribe medications to manage withdrawal. Second, staff are available 24/7 to address mental health issues that arise. Third, any other medical issues can be addressed, such as illness or medication management. Lastly, this intensive level of treatment can provide nutritional care to further improve the individual's health.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
At Stonewater Adolescent Recovery Center, medically monitored Withdrawal Management protocol is offered as a necessary first step for those adolescents who still have a strong physical dependence on drugs or alcohol. This clinically structured protocol was designed specifically for the needs of an adolescent addict to incorporate the physical considerations of a developing teen. Safely removing these toxic chemicals is the first critical step in developing a new foundation to build upon for successful recovery.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

For those seeking help with addiction, a drug rehab in Mississippi offers the necessary care to achieve long-term recovery. Options include inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and long-term drug rehab in Mississippi.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

The goal of trauma therapy is to help you heal from the effects of witnessing or experiencing a traumatic event. You are provided support to process those traumatic memories and then develop coping strategies to improve your emotional resilience and ability to cope in society.

Family therapy involves group sessions in which all members of the family unit are together to discuss how addiction has affected them collectively and individually. Experienced therapists help guide families to develop strategies that protect their well being and emotional health while supporting their loved one's efforts to recover.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Where do I even begin? Writing this feels like trying to catch a sunbeam—it's overflowing with emotions. Our journey with Stonewater has been a miracle. When we were searching for residential care, it was like being lost in a storm. Terrifying doesn't even begin to cover it. But right from that very first call to Stonewater, it was like a gentle hand reaching out. There was this immediate warmth, this understanding that wrapped around me—and hearing them talk about incorporating faith? That was like a sigh of relief and comfort. It just felt right. We had to wait a few weeks for a bed, which felt like forever, but even then, they were so kind, offering other options while letting us know they were there for us. And deep down, I just knew Stonewater was where we needed to be. When I dropped off my 17-year-old in September 2024, he was… well, hurting. We were all hurting. It was a chaotic, scary time, and we were all so afraid. But somehow, I trusted them. There was nothing more we could do on our own. I had faith in the process and in the professionals. It felt like finally surrendering, saying, "Okay, we're lost, but I hope you know the way." Stonewater was our last hope, and they became our lifeline. And the communication? Oh my goodness, it felt like constant, gentle reassurance. I probably emailed his therapist, Bec, daily, and she always replied with grace and empathy. I was a nervous wreck, holding onto my seat, waiting for the next disaster- but I knew he was safe. And those family weekends? They were just… pure love. You could see how much everyone cared, how invested the founders were, and how much the boys were changing. It filled me with an overwhelming sense of gratitude, mixed with a hint of that "what now?" feeling, filled with fear for the future and the unknown, but I knew they were building a solid foundation. It’s beautiful that many of the staff have walked similar paths. This creates an incredible connection with the boys, and you can see the beauty of recovery all around. The bonds we formed—with the staff and other families—are just… precious. Stonewater wasn't only working on my boy; they were also supporting me. It was truly God's grace that led us there. We wouldn't be where we are today without them, and I'd recommend them a thousand times over. Even their aftercare recommendations were spot-on. They just get it- they know what they are doing. Now, months later, I am still watching my boy bloom into the incredible young man I always knew he could be, and Stonewater has played a pivotal role in this. I'm so incredibly grateful to Stonewater and especially to Bec Inman, whom I absolutely adore. I pray that God continues to bless them, every single person there, and every young man who walks through their doors. They're doing such beautiful, important work.

From the very first call to Stonewater, every single one of you wrapped your loving arms around my son and our family and guided us through a difficult period. We were introduced to therapists, medical professionals, educators, and addiction recovery coaches from the get-go. This was followed by support from parents with sons at Stonewater as well as alumni parents whose sons had been there years earlier. My son was also introduced to young men like himself – boys who had a dual diagnosis of addiction coincident with an underlying condition that I’ll summarize as I’m not good enough-ness. I’m not writing to just recommend Stonewater so much as to testify about this place and how it saved our life. My son had been in therapy, but it wasn’t enough to go an hour a week, removed from the context of a chaotic daily life. A psychiatrist was also consulted and he prescribed medication three different times with only one hour visitation each time in getting to know my son, and sadly, that psychiatrist and his medical protocol left lots to be desired and possibly messed my son up even more. An IEP had been created at the school and the team did work with me and him, but alas the school setting was counterproductive to what he truly needed. Then came Stonewater and assessments by caring professionals who were able to observe him 24/7, along with an education assessment where daily adjustments were made in concert with his therapist, and group therapy where he learned he was not the only kid who needs support, plus individual therapy with someone who not only understood my son but is like him – a unicorn – a theater kid thrown into a world of boys who play football and baseball and don’t open space to accommodate a boy who loves anime and costumes and has big feelings. Medical assessments were also in place where his medicine protocol was calibrated to meet his individual need. Meanwhile, a team of support staff made sure he had healthy meals and understood hygiene, nutrition and health issues as well as exercise and recreation. Addiction recovery was part of the daily routine. Each staff member, including a therapy dog name Ford, came from a world of recovery, spoke about their own struggle and journey, accepted my son, celebrated him, loved and supported him. Oh, Stonewater – this is me pouring out my love and appreciation to you. You were a miracle of divine intervention at a time when all seemed hopeless. Most importantly, the flame inside my son that I have always seen but was struggling to get others to see and at the darkest hour, was having difficulty seeing myself was cranked up almost on impact with y’all, and over the three months my son spent with you, I saw his flame re-ignite. I could see it in his eyes that sparkled, in his laughter that returned, and I could feel it in the connection his big feeling heart was able to make again. How do I thank someone who has taken us from rock bottom to the mountain top? All y’all are my heart family now (as Clinical Director, Jeff Noles, called us). My son and I are going to thank you by continuing to be part of the Stonewater family – leading by example, supporting others with loving and welcoming arms, and making sure that families who find themselves at the same crossroads know the way to you. Love, Rachel

I highly recommend Stonewater for any teen boy that is struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma and addiction. Our teen went through the ninety day program and graduated a different person. The time and effort that the staff puts into these boys on an individual basis is great. He went there not knowing anyone and came home with lifelong friends. Not only with the other boys, but with the staff. They care about these boys and show it through their hard work and dedication. The staff is not there just for the boys but for the families. They helped us by teaching us self care and how to support our boys while there and after they leave. I’m so glad we are now a part of the Stonewater family.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Rebecca, thank you so much for sharing! You are so right - being a part of the Stonewater family is not just important during the program but after. We love to see the progress our families make alongside their children!

While I think the Care at stonewater is wonderful in the support that they give families is wonderful I'm very disappointed in the aftercare. I debated on even writing this because everybody was so kind there. However what is the point of finding all the support telling us that afterwards we would have it that they have connections with sending us on to good places if we should run into insurance issues or we need long-term care to only be placed with a place that would lie to us and be deceptive. We made the best decision we could as a family that was grieving needing to send our son somewhere else. We relied heavily on the wisdom of the professionals at stonewater and we ended up at a place that was untruthful about the therapies that they provide which is the specific reason why we chose that one. There is no teacher there to guide him through his senior year and they have placed him in an all-adult facility that is why there's no academic support. As much as we loved our time at stonewater what was the point when this is where we would end up. I feel we were taking advantage of in in our grief and desperation.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Thank you for sharing this feedback and experience, Emily. We work hard to vet the other programs we recommend for care after Stonewater and hate hearing that one of these programs didn't meet your or our expectations. We will reach out directly to get more information and continue to support in any way that we can. Thank you again for sharing this important feedback.

As a parent/guardian you will be expected to learn, grow, and participate setting a stage for success to be as supportive as you can be in the recovery journey.

Our son just graduated from Stonewater. As parents, we never expected for our son to battle with substance misuse. We raised him to know right and wrong and brought him up surrounded by loving family, friends and church family. When we found out, we were heartbroken, confused, and just didn’t know what to do. A family friend connected us to a rep for an adult facility. This rep ultimately connected us to Stonewater. We spoke with the intake specialist, Bridget, who was a God send. We prayed over this decision and ultimately, felt God was leading us to Stonewater. While at Stonewater, our son worked hard and so did we. We appreciated that they provide family coaching, weekly check-ins with our son’s therapist, family alumni calls (the parents that have been through it all), and the family day sessions. Everything Stonewater does is intentional and helps the entire family get through such a difficult time. Our son came back to us smiling and looking like the son we had before he fell into substance misuse. He still has some work to do, but we’re so grateful that Stonewater helped us start on this journey to recovery.

Thank you Amber! None of us ever expect to be there - but making the tough decision to help your child heal is brave and gives life to the entire family. Thank you for sharing your story!

Our son spent 90 days at Stonewater and we are so grateful for all the help and support he has been given to continue with his recovery process. The staff onsite are truly unique and so special- their communication was amazing and we feel like we are lucky for the opportunity to have our son there.

This is such meaningful feedback, Andie. Thank you for sharing!
