About Wellstone Regional Hospital

Wellstone Regional Hospital is a behavioral health facility that’s located in Jeffersonville, Indiana. You’ll have the ability to choose from inpatient treatment and an intensive outpatient program for adults, adolescents, and children. Two tracks are available for addiction and mental health.

The addiction treatment program at Wellstone is called Stepping Stones to Recovery. Stepping Stones is a program for adults 18 and older and offers you a pathway to sobriety. Medical and psychotherapeutic interventions are used. You can also expect them to use the 12 steps as a mode of recovery. You can invite your family to be a part of your recovery journey by attending treatment meetings.

If you choose the intensive outpatient program, you’ll participate in several group sessions per week and one educational session. You’ll be encouraged to attend AA or NA meetings in addition to the intensive outpatient program sessions.

The adolescent programs are for kids aged 13 through 17. During this inpatient treatment, you can expect your kids to follow a structured schedule that includes group and individual therapy. They’ll also participate in recreation time, study hall, and goal setting. The intensive outpatient program for adolescents is held between three and five days per week from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.

The children’s programs use the same components and schedules as the adolescents. Children aged four through 12 are treated in these programs. I think it’s great they offer programs that treat patients of every age.

Some former clients said the staff was kind and they had a great experience. Others said that these programs lacked structure and professionalism.

I don't know if any of the staff remembers me but I was here when I was going through a lot of stuff happening in my life this month in march all the staff who work there are very kind towards you and they would help you feel better or ask if you needed something they would help you out immediately and the therapys and the activities were good the gym and outside not soo much as I'm not into that kind of stuff not only that they help you feel a whole lot better about yourself and make positive choices in between your life this place deserves five stars for making the most out of it thanks to all the staff members out there taking your time out there taking care of all of us!P.S if I go through something else again In my life I know exactly where I would go If it happens to me again I would probably speak to my doctor about this place and recommend coming back here and maybe come back here again one day to get the help that I need and only worry about my own perspective not others.

Some of my purpose being there was to deal with my depression and anxiety. While some staff was nice, some were not. Some allowed fights to happen among patients over mistakes or even issues dealing with some patients trying to steal other patients clothes and claim them as theirs. The pillow and bed situation is a nightmare with beds that are hard and cause problems sleeping and body pain and pillows that are all beyond flat and cheap. Let's not forget some of the groups had topics that didn't apply to all patients and yet they tried to force patience to attend groups that didn't have to do with why they were there. The times phones and shower times are available to use to call love one or take a shower was so limited and restrictive that it made it difficult. Another thing was not allowing patients to lay down unless a doctor orders it. Not everyone feels great or wants to converse with other patients or watch tv. Laying down shouldn't be restrictive if someone is going to groups and behaving...or if they aren't feeling good and want to lie down. Lastly, making people have to wait for their clothes and sleep the first night in paper scrubs isn't only uncomfortable, but those things aren't meant for bigger people. It's supposed to be place for healing, but felt like a prison sometimes... which isn't very great for those struggling with mental health. Some good things though we're the food at the cafeteria, the bathrooms and showers in every room was nice (when they didn't lock you out of your room where you maybe wanted privacy), the medication times and staff being on top of that was nice, and the fact there was access to tv, coloring supplies and art therapy was really pleasant too! Oh and allowing smoke breaks for those who smoke was cool too even though I don't smoke.Honestly... if I needed psychiatric help at a behavioral unit again, I would go elsewhere. :/

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient programs are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs. Wellstone Regional Hospital offers intensive outpatient program treats adults 18 and over, and adults in need of various levels of clinical care, but without the restrictions and structure of an inpatient setting. There is very little interruption of one's family and existing social supports. There are group therapy sessions and a family education session each week.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

For long-term recovery from drug addiction, drug rehab in Indiana is often key. This treatment gives individuals who are struggling with a substance use disorder the tools to manage their disorder and achieve long-term sobriety.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Animal therapy (aka pet therapy or animal-assisted therapy) can be very healing, as it allows patients to bond with animals, who give unconditional love. This is particularly useful for those who suffered trauma by the hands of people, who may be able to trust and form closer attachments to animals than humans at certain stages of rehabilitation. Wellstone Regional Hospital utilizes pet therapy to explore patient's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. On Friday, Thuptin (which means keeper of the heart), a Tibetan Spaniel, spends the afternoon traveling through the hospital participating in group therapy sessions for all ages.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Listen, I've been reading some of these reviews and jeez.. I can only speak of my experiences, though. I was very compelled to do good in the teenage unit. It was a wide variety of people, all needing different things, but when I was there all anybody really needed was for someone to walk them through how to cope with how they felt. All of the patients there always had each other's back when I was there. The nurses were phenomenal, and so were the techs. They do care, I remember on my second admit, Linwood would try to avoid me being in a dirty room to sleep/stay in. Brooklyn is very easy-going, and funny. She is very quick to react to a code though. Emily is an amazing person, funny, strong, quick-witted. I will never forget these staff members for believing in me. Grimace, Brooklyn, and Emily, thank you for everything, I'm not sure I would be where I am today if it wasn't for you guys. Linny, you might not show it like the female techs do, but I was really touched when I found out the thing about the bedroom situation. I cried, it wasn't like I thought you didn't care, it was just a "little thing", you know? Anyway, thank you, I don't think I'll ever forget any of you. I am now 5 months clean of SH and SI thoughts. All my love is with you guys. :)

I attended this group therapy program starting in February and graduated just last Friday after four life-changing weeks. I came in at one of the lowest points in my life—barely able to get out of bed, struggling with daily panic attacks, depression, and no sense of direction. Now, I have a job, a proposal under my belt, structure in my day, energy, and real goals I’m working toward. The environment was safe, clean, and calming. Cindy made her room feel like a haven—with dim lighting and a sense of ease that helped me feel instantly comfortable. We were always in a clean space with access to snacks, juice, coffee, and water, which was such a thoughtful touch that made a big difference. Group therapy ran Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. They even provided transportation if you didn’t have a way there, which was such a relief. Every day started with meditation, stretching, and a group check-in, followed by meaningful lessons that truly stuck. That consistency helped me rebuild trust in routine and connection. Cynthia Ward deserves special recognition—she’s a compassionate, relatable, and incredibly insightful therapist. She took my messy, overwhelmed thoughts and helped me make sense of them with grace and understanding. Her presence and kind soul have left a lasting mark on me. I also want to give an honorable mention to Voss, Amanda, Kathy, and (possibly Annette—I can’t quite remember the name!) who helped manage the group with care and quick action when conflict arose. They created a space where I felt seen, safe, and heard. If you’re struggling with mental health and don’t know where to turn—go here. This program gave me my life back. - Ezekiel Teal

I was here as a patient for awhile. This place exists purely to profit off the misfortune of people and is akin to a prison if you’re in-patient. Steer clear unless you need to detox.

Would give less than 1 star if I could. My adult child has been worse off after both of his admissions. No individual therapist, forced to attend groups that have nothing to do with why they are there. Doctors don't listen, rarely around. Just throw some meds at them without listening or addressing their concerns. I'd give this place less an zero stars if I could. Horrible, Horrible place.

I was here for 10 days, and it's actually really good compared to other ones. The staff is super nice (some), and they're chill. I was in unit 5 and they treated you very well. (Depending on how you act.) But the reason I gave it a 4 star is because some of the rooms didn't have shower curtains and water got everywhere, the beds were a bit uncomfortable (but it's hospital beds what do you expect). The toothbrush they gave you was super hard on my teeth and felt like my braces were gonna fall off. But I had an amazing time and I would recommend this place for people who have mental problems. Just be nice to the staff and you'll have a good time.
