About Newton Medical Center

You can get either inpatient or outpatient care depending on your needs and recovery goals. Inpatient care gives you intensive addiction treatment while you stay at the hospital. That’s a great option for people who are in their early recovery and need a supervised and supportive environment. Since staff is there around the clock you also know you’ll have care any time you need it.

Their outpatient programs are more suitable for people who are fairly stable but still need active treatment to help them stay sober. You’d still live at home and you’d come to the medical center for your therapy and other treatment.

Their treatment programs vary depending on your recovery and what you need. They offer medications to help with withdrawal symptoms. If you’re experiencing opioid or alcohol dependency you might also receive FDA approved medications for a longer time period to support your sustained sobriety. They’ll help you learn how to prevent relapse. They can connect you with other rehabs or resources that can help you too like detox centers. That’s just part of the way this behavioral health department runs as a comprehensive rehab for your recovery.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Group-based psycho-education and therapy is provided during a three-hour period, three to five days a week. Because patients in our program return home after treatment sessions, they can more quickly begin the transition to everyday living situations and challenges.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Overcoming a drug or alcohol addiction is a difficult process, but through careful evaluation and individual determination, it can be accomplished. At Atlantic Behavioral Health, their outpatient chemical dependency programs help adults and adolescents overcome substance abuse issues, while remaining at home, at school or on the job.

inpatient iconInpatient

Inpatient mental health programs are designed to help stabilize those with mental illnesses. At Atlantic Behavioral Health, they encourage personal empowerment among their hospitalized patients through self-awareness and education. After a successful treatment, patients can return to the care of their psychiatrist or clinician and when necessary, may be referred to an intensive outpatient program. For those with persistent and severe mental illness, residential services provide a means of safe, affordable housing, accompanied by community-based psychiatric rehabilitation. At Atlantic Behavioral Health, they provide their residents with the support they need to develop social interactive skills and greater independence.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

In the event of a psychiatric emergency, Atlantic Behavioral Health offers crisis intervention services, including a 24-hour hotline, risk assessments and screenings, and community trauma assistance. Newton Medical Center is a state-designated Psychiatric Emergency Services and Screening Center, providing 24-hour emergency mental health care to patients of any age, both over the phone and in person.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

sober-living iconSober Living Homes

Accommodations include two supervised group homes and several semi-supervised apartments. Priority is given to patients recently discharged from state psychiatric facilities that need a supervised living arrangement. A reasonable rent is required for participation.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in New Jersey is the process of addressing the complex issues involved with addiction. Challenges are identified and addressed through individual and group counseling. Participants learn how to manage these issues without the use of substances.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Pet therapy can have many physical and emotional benefits for hospital patients, including reduced blood pressure and stress. Atlantic Health System's pet therapy program, Soothing Paws®, has approximately 80 pet therapy teams, each made up of a hospital volunteer and his or her trained dog, that visit patients and their loved ones in their hospitals.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Counseling that includes parental and family involvement is central to their program and highly encouraged. Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Diet can directly affect a person’s physical health, mental well-being and overall quality of life. Eating healthfully – ensuring that you get the nutrients you need to stay well and manage any health problems – can significantly decrease the amount of medication needed to treat a disease. Overlook Medical Center’s outpatient dietitians are experts in medical nutrition therapy, preventative medicine, current research findings, behavioral change strategies and mindfulness training.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. When a traumatic or catastrophic event occurs – whether at school, work, the neighborhood or larger community – Atlantic Behavioral Health is there to help survivors, witnesses and their families begin the healing process.

They banned me from visiting my blind, deaf and restrained mother with covid, after filing a complaint against them because they lost her hearing aid and her specialty medication and aren't treating her well....... then they moved her out and she died. 🥺

Although a surge of cases was ongoing during check in, the entire staff was found to be very attentive. Particularly the Registered Nurses and Nurse Assistants, often not given the recognition that they deserve. My Spouse staying with me through the whole time I was there, was treated with the same respect, asked repeatedly if there was anything that they could do for her every time they came to check in on me. The Staff definitely made a difficult experience a lot more comfortable to endure.

I gave birth recently here, honestly don’t understand all negative reviews everywhere forwarding everyone to Morristown hospital, are you serious?!? I’ve had sonograms and pediatrician in Morristown, worse experience ever. Newton medical center has great maternity department, all clean new and beautiful, they did renovations recently.. you have your own room, not sharing with others, so peaceful and quiet, beautiful view. All rooms literally look like hotel rooms, I haven’t seen doctors much because my delivery was pretty fast and progressing but nurses were wonderful, couldn’t ask for better, especially Beth! I felt like I was a newborn and everyone was taking such good care of me. Highly recommend giving birth here.

When I went around three years ago they not only were super rude and didn’t help out at all when I was trying to find the place I was looking for. They didn’t share any information with me about my injury and when I was sat outside to get something for my injury they put an older male outside who was coughing up a lot of blood and they just left him there. It is by far the worst hospital I’ve ever been to. When I was talking to an actual good doctor in Chicago to check my injury since this hospital did absolutely nothing but charge me for extra stuff (always ask for your hospital bill) he told me that their actions weren’t professional or standard.

I had gone to the ER on April 14th, ended up staying for close to 2 weeks. I had a colonoscopy on the 15th and surgery on the 16th. I believe that I was in 1 Hussy. The nurses were very helpful and friendly and I can't just choose one nurse but the two the I remember Ma and Jhoann very helpful and VERY friendly. I had surgery that removed a section of my intestines and at the beginning the colostomy bag kept leaking. They cleaned me up. I have nothing but praise for the nurses that had taken care of me during my stay. When I was released I needed to go to wound care once a week for several weeks. The nurses in that department were friendly, caring and took the time to explain everything. There are two names that stuck in my head; Alexis and Angela. Great people who definitely put you at ease. Couldn't ask for more.

Had me sitting for hours and hours didn't get a room, they had me on a bed in the hallway. No one came to talk to me or let me know what's going on. They just kept poking me and poking me with needles to try to draw blood and then tell me "your fine" Yet nothing was discussed or anything.

I went to Newton hospital yesterday with my husband and I have never experienced such incompetence in my life. My husband had been suffering from severe abdominal pain for going on a week. He was constantly puking or going to the bathroom along with being severely dehydrated, chills, etc. They took bloodwork, gave him an iv with fluids and anti-nausea meds. After being there for 5 hours NO other tests were even done nor were they ever offered. We were told his condition wasn’t emergency department worthy. The only pieces of advice? To see a gastro and to stop SMOKING. Yes you read that right. Something he hadn’t done in days anyway due to being so sick. My husband was STILL in pain and puked a number of times there and did not feel comfortable going home. They kicked us out anyway. It was extremely obvious they were not taking us seriously. When we first showed up the place was so packed I couldn’t even find parking. I’ve read plenty about hospitals pressuring people to discharge too quickly due to high level of patients and needing beds freed. Now we’ve experienced it first hand. We voiced our concerns numerous times about leaving and it didn’t matter. If a patient is discharged too early and readmitted within 30 days, said hospital will be penalized. Considering my husband isn’t any better (surprise surprise) I’m sure he will be readmitted soon if a gastro can’t see us in time. I can promise it won’t be at Newton but they will be held accountable. We have never been so disgusted and appalled by treatment in a hospital in our whole life by so called professionals.
