About Breakthroughs: Counseling & Recovery

Breakthroughs: Counseling & Recovery is an outpatient drug and alcohol addiction rehab in Jacksonville, Florida. Located on Williamsburg Park Boulevard, it’s not far from St. John’s River. They provide intensive outpatient treatment services for adolescents and adults. The staff will provide a substance abuse assessment and refer you to the appropriate level of services. Counseling services for individuals, families and couples are also available.

One type of addiction they specialize in treating is ecstasy, also known as Molly or MDMA. The drug is typically taken at parties and has a high potential for abuse. Other substances they can help clients with include pain medications, inhalants and alcohol.

In the intensive outpatient program (IOP) clients will meet at the facility four to five days per week for three-hour sessions. They offer morning and evening programs to accommodate your schedule. In individual and group therapy, you’ll work with counselors who are licensed addiction professionals with years of experience treating addictions and co-occurring conditions.

The facility is an LGBTQ friendly location and will be to provide treatment that recognizes the unique ways that substance abuse impacts these individuals. All treatment services are provided without discrimination against race, gender expressions, sexual orientation or spiritual beliefs.

Breakthrough: Counseling & Recovery also provides DUI classes at their facility. They collaborate with the Northeast Florida Safety Council and other out of town safety councils to make sure you meet the requirements for having your driver’s license reinstated. As you receive substance abuse counseling for your DUI, information about your care will be provided to your attorney and any other professionals who require it.

In between treatment sessions, some of the fun activities to do in Jacksonville include visiting the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens or checking out the Riverside Arts Market. With warm weather throughout the year, you can explore various water activities such as fishing or swimming that can provide options for sober activities and outlets for relaxation in recovery.

I have a DUI from 2 years ago that I believed was resolved; however, I went to get my drivers license but the DMV still had it in their system that I didn t complete the counseling piece. I am now 6 months pregnant and Breakthrough is wanting me to go to 12 weeks of classes after the initial assessment because they placed me in their Level 2 program for this being my second DUI. No other personal behaviors and personality assessment considered on the decision making of their recommended treatment. The counselor I met with said they could work with me to knock out individual and group sessions in a shorter amount of time because I will be having my baby in the next 3 months and will need my driving privileges restored before then. They are now telling me they cannot accommodate my circumstances. This place seems so disorganized and if working with my unique situation wasn t an option, it should ve never been brought up to me and it s obviously been done in the past if it was mentioned that could be an option - I was not the one to ask if they would accommodate me. It was suggested because of how far along I am. I am just now learning of this roadblock with the DMV and am willing to comply with how many sessions I need to attend to complete the program, but I don t have 12 sessions (1 session a week) to be able to commit to at this time. I witnessed firsthand someone else having their individual class after the group session I attended, so they definitely work with some people not sure why that s not offered for all especially for the reason that I mentioned. I just wasted an assessment fee and group fee ($115.00) plus time I don t have for absolutely nothing and now I have to find a new provider that will work with me. Don t waste your time, these people only want your money and don t want to see you move forward in your life and get this behind you. The office manager was extremely rude and not empathetic to my needs at all. Complete TRASH! I don t see how coming once a week will help you any more than coming twice a week. Make it make sense. Money hungry pigs!

Accepted Insurance

Breakthroughs: Counseling & Recovery works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient programs are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). The IOP meets 4-5 days per week for 3 hours every session. Groups and therapies are available in both morning and evening hours.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Florida provides quality treatment to help individuals overcome dependency related to a wide range of addictive substances. Programs address both the physical and mental aspects of addiction in order to help you make a full recovery.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Hypnotherapy (aka guided hypnosis) can be used as a therapeutic modality to treat substance use, especially in terms of quitting smoking cigarettes (nicotine). Clinical hypnotherapists help clients turn their attention inward, accessing unconscious or subconscious material, and then make suggestions that are healthier for the individual. The process can help clients make deep, positive, and lasting changes, including ceasing addictive habits.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life. Individual sessions can address a variety of concerns including addiction, behavioral issues, eating disorders, gambling, LGBTQ, postpartum, trauma and much more.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

The best therapy myself and my daughter have ever received. We both see John Gast, and literally the only person my daughter has ever opened up to in her true form. The main lady at the office desk, Dawn, is very sweet and helpful. This is how all therapy offices should operate. 100% recommend to anyone that needs help or even just needs someone to talk to!

The overall experience at breakthroughs has been most exhilarating and helpful. not only are my children both thriving and going forward with their lives, they are happily talking to and sharing with people. the things they need to share here. a special props to miss Geanna - who is a class act as well as Don the receptionist who's my favorite because she never ever has a frown. she always has a smile and a kind word- I laughingly come in and say where is that beautiful soul and I'm not kidding. she's a beautiful soul. breakthroughs has been a great experience and has been very rewarding for all of us. give it a shot!!!!

Just had my first visit/intake with John Gast. Obviously didn’t know what to expect but he was outstanding to say it best!!! Listened to everything, no judgement and he made the environment very comfortable. Highly recommended and I look forward to my next session. Update: I am now approximately just over three weeks now in my treatment with breakthrough. To date, I have seen my therapist John Gast Three times and have done three group sessions with Kelsey and Anthony. To say that it has continued to be amazing is an understatement. John continues to be amazing and Kelsey and Anthony have provided such perspective and guidance along with the other members of my group that I literally look forward to going to group sessions. Furthermore, even when I’m having a bad day, I leave those sessions with nothing but positivity for the future. Thank you so much and I wish I could write numerous reviews, but I guess I can only update this one.LOL. Would give 10 stars if I could.

As much as I don't want Brittany to be too booked and busy for me, after seeing her for several months, she definitely deserves an amazing review. I’ve been in therapy before, but I’ve never had a therapist as exceptional as Brittany. She is truly great at what she does. While I may not be an expert in therapy (aside from my own experiences as a patient and a Psychology course I took in college), Brittany checks every box of what makes a good therapist. She creates an incredibly therapeutic, neutral, and non-judgmental space where listening is her priority. She doesn't project her personal opinions and judgments but instead provides strictly therapeutic advice, allowing me to come to my own conclusions while still offering valuable insights from her wealth of knowledge in psychology and mental health. I tend to talk a lot, and it’s been such a healing and validating experience to have someone actively listen and empathize, while also guiding me with the answers I’ve been searching for in my journey to understand myself better. All in all, Brittany is fantastic, and she’s been instrumental in helping me on my mental health journey.

Really good experience with counseling. Every class I learned something new or a way to deal with daily life lessons. Also this group is good for staying topic with everyone in group and not just one specific person.

I was really looking forward to working with Jeanna, but after meeting her I would not recommend my worst enemy go to her. After some confusion was cleared up, she lacked compassion, empathy, had an edge and was petty. I have seen a few therapists over the years, have gotten along with most of them but not all, but I have never been treated as unprofessionally and unkindly as I was by Jeanna. She not only lacked compassion, she was petty. Not all personalities are good matches and that is understandable. She was harsh and had an edge the entire time because there was some confusion and I had attended the session under false pretenses. Naturally, when this came to light in the middle of the session, I was confused and anxious. This woman couldn’t have been less understanding or compassionate. At the end she told the person I came with it was nice to meet them and said nothing to me. That was the final straw and was so beyond petty, childish, and rude, neither of us will be back. I don’t care if you don’t like me personally, have the professionalism to be cordial. Her edginess, harshness, and rudeness was so overly pronounced it was would have been comical had she not been a mental health professional. It was traumatizing since we came to this woman for help. She suggested we schedule at least four more weekly sessions, but we left without scheduling a single session. We will be going elsewhere with providers who are compassionate, kind, and understanding.
