About Burrell Behavioral Health

I like that this facility provides counseling in a collaborative environment, so you can participate in more than one line of treatment if you need to. For example, you might seek therapy for addiction treatment and psychiatric services for a co-occurring mental health condition like anxiety. Their team is multidisciplinary and trained in covering all aspects of care. Here, they use several evidence based practices including trauma focused therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing and dialectical behavioral therapy.

Your care team will work with you to understand and assess your condition. Then, they’ll create a custom treatment plan to meet your needs. In addition to counseling, they also offer coaching calls and life skills training to help you create a foundation for long term recovery.

Has to be the worst mental health treatment facility in the nation. They had me on the highest dose of adderall and benzodiazepines then dropped me off with no explanation or reason why, I had taken those meds for years too.

The Lakeland staff was incredibly friendly, answered all of my questions(some, numerous times), and made me feel much better in a situation which made me absolutely miserable. I cannot emphasize enough how their patience and politeness made such a situation even remotely bearable. Both the psychologist and psychiatrist were patient, and they made me feel like at least someone understood. Even the guy who delivered the food for my restricted diet was very friendly. Lakeland did everything it could to satisfy my needs. I had a list of names to give a shout out to the members of the staff, but I misplaced it. I will post them as soon as I find it. Accepted Insurance

Burrell Behavioral Health works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Burrell has two residential treatment programs for children and adolescents. Both provide much more than conventional treatment, they immerse young people in ground-breaking activity based therapies offered in a natural home and school setting. By coordinating unique therapeutic programs and the normalcy of a home and school environment, they are able to help young people develop trust, build self-esteem and become receptive to the intensive psychiatric treatment they receive. Burrell’s Bramblewood Facility serves children 8 to 13 years old and their Milano Facility services youth 13 to 18 years of age. These are youth who have serious emotional and psychological illnesses. The average length of stay is generally three to nine months.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

Due to the potential for severe withdrawal symptoms, it is important to detox in a facility with 24-hour clinical care in Missouri. Most people experience some form of withdrawal symptoms, and this setting offers medical professionals who are on site 24/7 to provide any necessary treatment. This supervision makes the detox process safer and less painful and improves the likelihood of a successful recovery.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Missouri usually involves several phases: detox, rehab, and aftercare. The rehab phase may include a combination of inpatient and outpatient treatments, as the individual moves through a continuum of care on their recovery journey.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance abuse treatment programs in Missouri help individuals struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders. These programs utilize evidence-based therapies like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and mindfulness-based interventions. With a range of treatment options available, including outpatient, inpatient, and residential programs, you can find the right program to meet your unique needs and improve your quality of life.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
hiv-aids-program thumbnail image

HIV/AIDS Program

HIV/AIDS programs support disease prevention and management in high-risk individuals in recovery. Individuals who engage in intravenous drug use and other addictive behaviors are at a higher risk of becoming infected with HIV. Rehab centers that specialize in treating this population typically have a high number of nurses, physicians, and psychiatrists on staff who can make sure both their medical and mental health needs are met.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Therapist is wonderful, unfortunately the psychiatric "doctors" and their staff are an absouloute joke at the best of times. My first vist consisted of the lady messing my pills up and ultimately leaving me with without proper medication for 2 and half months due to a bad reaction to the new "better" pills. During which time I made serval calls to both the nurse's answering machine and reception staff (whom always told me to leave a message on the machine) all the while being reassured by both machine and staff that I would receive a call back within 24 hours, yet I never received a single call. It was also during this time I had my appointment rescheduled 2 times because the appointment was never actually added to their computer. Which apparently is a common glitch in their system according to staff. So when I finally got to my appointment yesterday I was told I was late despite being there 3 minutes early (I planned to be in earlier, but traffic was bad) because they require all patients to be in office 15 mintues early (No one ever told me) so the nurse can run checks on them (you know instead of taking that into consideration when giving appointment times like every other dr I've ever seen) so I was considered a no show and my appointment canceled. But I shouldn't worry because there was a cancellation for tomorrow so they could squeeze me in (keep in mind I live an hour and a half away). But I'm desperate for help so I took it. Only to be called today to be told that since I was a "noshow" yesterday they canceled my appointment for today because I needed to go to one of their little clinics that "train" you to keep schedule better and IF I passed I would be allowed to make a new appointment, but since they're no more cancellation holes to fill it would be late May before I could be seen. I told them I would be taking myself elsewhere (though to be fair I wasn't that nice). TL;DR If you are thinking of coming here for yourself or a loved one DON'T. Try Jorden Valley or any of the other Mental Health places in the area.

I was told my psychiatrist would be able to write me an ESA letter earlier this year, so I called in regards of that. I was told Burrell no longer offered those, so they gave me a website to go through to get the certification. I am now getting spammed called every hour by this website they told me to go through. I am very irritated that Burrell is encouraging their customers to use this website when it would make more sense to just redirect the client to their primary care provider (what I should’ve done) Aside from that very annoying situation, Burrell is a decent place to therapy and psych support. There are some incredible people who work there.

This is genuinely one of the worst mental health services ever. They are completely unhelpful and it’s obvious that they are just out for a quick buck. Avoid them at all costs!!!!!!

This place just gets worse. I’ve wrote pages long complaints from 5 years ago when dealing with them went to H! Nobody cared to make anything better. The previous 10 years before Covid everything seemed fine. This time, Intake took hours! Then took a couple months to get an appointment just to be told I can’t find out if this counselor is available weekly until I go waste another hr chatting. I’m pretty sure most people if not everyone needs weekly appointments. 50 minutes at a time isn’t long enough to make you feel comfortable skipping a week. Thank Medicaid for that too.

I've never had a problem with them. The pharmacist is a very caring man who stops what he is doing, even lunch, to assist me. The nurses have always answered my questions. The transition center though needs lots of improvement. But the Bradford one is fantastic

Convinced the people doing the schedule cannot even read. Went in for an appointment (( spent money on Uber to get there)) just to be told they didn't schedule me correctly and that they didn't have time for me. They rescheduled me and then on the day of my apt they called me at seven am to tell me they once again did not have time for me because I need a 40 minute appointment and not a 20. My mental health is spiraling and they don't care, everything is a game to them. The only requirement to work here is so have a pulse

UPDATED 06-19-2025 A new development for all seeking psychiatric care. Be warned that you do not pay them to see their providers and get to choose who you'd like to see. They decide that if you do not click well with more than 1 provider that you shouldn't be "ALLOWED" to find the one that is right for you. YES that is the term that I was given, "allowed." Disgusted Pretty sure we are the ones paying you all and not the other way around. If you have the option RUN! Oh and I noticed that I didn't get a response from Burrell like others did. Guess they got tired of looking at the bad reviews and the emails that came pouring in... OLD REVIEW: You will constantly change doctors because no one ever stays. Also watch what is being charted about you. I caught my practioner charting lies in my file. She was charting stuff we never talked about. She made a diagnosis that she didn't tell me about. Then when things get tough and you call them out on their BS you get transferred to a different doctor or threatend that you'll no longer be seen. The communication between the nurses and your doctor is ridiculous and practically non-existant. It takes you telling them you had to call the crisis line before they will listen to you. I've been with them for years and I'm FINALLY fed up. I'm driving an hour in the opposite direction to get the help I need and get away from Burrell. Good luck Like I said be careful.
