Part 1 of reviewI have been dealing with Mercy as they are my doctors for two different types of cancer that I ve had in three years. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, the overall service that they had provided me contained a few errors even though they were errors that could ve potentially harmed my life. I had a PICC line in my arm. (for those you don t know what that is. It s a tube that is connected to the central vein in your arm, that has two ports attached to it for inserting meds in to. The bandages for my PICC line were falling off, so I requested that they be changed. She stated I would be OK till my next appt. After insisting she do it then She said she was having issues w/ my bandages so she decided to take her gloves off to get a better grip. If anything would ve gotten into that line that went into my vein it could ve killed me, however, she was completely indifferent to my safety. This was after she made me wait two hours in the chemo room doing absolutely nothing whereas in all prior appointments, I was immediately given premeds, hydration, and my blood work done so they could start the process of my actual chemo treatment when I finally got frustrated after sitting there that long and to go find her, she actually rolled her eyes at me and told me I wasn t her only patient, and it was normal to wait that long. I was about 12 sessions in at that point so I knew it wasn't normal to wait that long. When I went to the head nurse to complain regarding this, I was told that she was just loaned to them for the day by the actual hospital. I advised them that I never wanted her to be my nurse again as she clearly had no concern for my safety, they said they could not promise that as it dependent on the number of nurses and patients per day, I again had to file a formal complaint with the Hospital to ensure that she was never given to me as my nurse again.A month after I finished treatment for breast cancer, I ended up having a medical issue that required immediate attention. However, my hematologist didn t see it as an actual emergency. She advised we would run bloodwork and take it from that and while I was there at the doctors office, I could schedule an appointment with the appropriate department that would be able to further assist me . When attempting to set that appointment, I was told that the next available was over two months away, which was unacceptable to me as what I was experiencing with something that couldnt wait two months to be addressed. The further advised me that if I needed an earlier appointment that my doctor would have to call and request one. when my blood work came back, my hematologist sent me notice indicating that my blood work looked fine and that I could wait the two months for an appointment. After reviewing my blood work, I found something that was never listed previously on any of my bloodwork. after researching to see what that was, I found out that it was part of my blood cells that only become active in the event of a parasitic infection, allergic reaction to medication, (and I wasn t on any new medication s) or Cancer. when I responded to my hematologist with this information, she advised me that I was correct however still did not feel that it warranted in earlier appointment. I responded to that telling her she was going to get me an appointment or I'd go above her considering I just finished treatment for cancer and was at a high risk for a secondary cancer to occur. She was able to get an appointment for the following week and the results of that was me finding out. I had a secondary primary cancer. From this point forward, it has been an absolute nightmare with my Cancer care team. I recently found out that they failed to upgrade my Cancer from stage two to stage three which occurred October of last year. additionally since starting the treatment in the process for my secondary primary cancer, my oncologist has not looked into anything regarding my breast cancer.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Once a person has become addicted to a substance, drug rehab in Maryland is often necessary to overcome that addiction. These programs provide the tools individuals need to manage the physical, mental, and emotional issues involved and begin a successful recovery journey.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

I had to go to the surgery center to meet with a PA for a kidney stone. My appointment was at 11am and I’m still sitting here waiting to be seen. I finally said something after an hour of waiting and handing in my check in form and was told I was overlooked because there’s no one at the front desk. This is totally unacceptable!

Brought my sister in law for a radiation consultation. Staff was rude. Although the waiting room was empty, her brother, an orthopedic surgeon was told she could only have one person in the waiting room. He came all the way up from Annapolis to bring her and the manager refused to make any exception to their policy. I would never seek treatment at Mercy after being treated so rudely.

Mercy Hospital is home to us for four days. The doctors, nurses and the entire staff are genuinely kind and accommodating. “Mercy and or Merciful “ which I think is the hospital’s mission is translated to its patients through gestures of love care by the entire staff. Thank you and may you be blessed a hundredfold ❤️🙏

They told me that I might have cancer. Then they denied my procedure because I'm homeless and alone. I guess that's their method of getting rid of cancer.
