About Soul’s Harbor

The nonprofit residential recovery facility located in Dallas, Texas, called Soul’s Harbor is a facility for men who are facing homelessness and substance misuse or a combination of both. They have a six-month residential program that helps you focus on getting better through a structured program that involves work therapy, relapse prevention, life skills training and spiritual growth. They can help you be self-sufficient and even help you get a job, which can eventually lead to your reintegrating back into society successfully with financial stability.

Residential Program for Men

Their six-month residential program includes a structured daily schedule as well as work therapy assignments that can give you a sense of purpose. I like that they also put a big emphasis on relapse prevention strategies and use a 12 Step model to keep you on the right path. They even have some more unique courses such as anger management, and they provide spiritual support by including Bible studies, prayer sessions and community fellowship in your program.

I noticed that they go the holistic route by dealing with not only your mental health but your physical, emotional, spiritual and even social health. They have 12 Step recovery meetings that are offered both at the location and through other external groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous. They also have support groups and give individual counseling to men who are dealing with trauma.

Vocational Support

Their work therapy and job training program can involve your giving a helping hand at their Soul’s Harbor thrift stores, learning customer service, doing inventory management, and retail sales. It’s a great opportunity for you to get hands-on work experience while you recover. They also help you build your resume so that it’s in peak condition when you send it out to companies. Finally, they offer transitional housing and court-ordered rehabilitation, as well as support for veterans.

I wanted to put this info out for those people who want to help other people. I donated a house full of goods to this organization from my late mothers home. A hutch was included in this donation.Watching my camera as the guy lifted my things into the truck, he forgot my hutch, I ask him if he had forgotten the hutch and he replied, there's missing pieces and no shelves (on my front porch like I told his boss) I replied there's only one piece but he continued to argue with me, he insisted there should be another piece). Really, how would he know? He left without my hutch. I called his boss and asked if it was appropriate for him to tell me No, he wasn't picking it up, he said no, it wasnt appropriate, he would have him come back and get it. He showed back up and was extremely disrespectful to me. Once again, he walked off without my hutch. I called back to tell the supervisor, but no one would answer the phone, and it went straight into voicemail. A few hours later, I heard a crash, and the wind had blown over my moms hutch. It's broken into pieces. I called him back to tell him what happened and sent him pictures, and to my surprise, he wasn't going to do anything about it. He let me know, "After all, it was a donation!" Someone surely would have appreciated this piece of furniture, but not now it's busted and broken and no home for it now but the dump and I'm sick to my stomach. I'm highly suggest that you not use this organization to give away your personal or treasured things. I should have called another organization, but I was so upset.I didn't think about it until it was too late.Souls Harbor of Dallas has no class what so ever. Oh, and those of you who think it's a Gov organization, IT IS NOT, It's privately owned. So let that sink in.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

monthly iconMonthly

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA). After completing the 6 month program, residents can seek a job and continue to stay at the facility until he feels comfortable to leave.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

During rehab in Texas, you'll deal with underlying issues that contribute to addiction. By addressing these challenges and learning healthy ways to cope with them, you'll develop strategies that help you live a drug-free lifestyle.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Soul's Harbor offers anger management.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

When I came to Souls Harbor I was told by kitchen staff that they acquired two dogs and that they were taking care of them, apparently they were abandoned near the area, as an animal lover I was excited and went to go see them, they made a bed for them on the outside kitchen patio, one dog was an old male Chihuahua mix and the other a female Chihuahua mix, they named them Chico and Chica, you could tell they were brother and sister dogs and came from the same litter, they stood by each other's side always. The female looked a little younger and the male a little other, the male would cough occasionally but could get around OK, he had an underlying issue that needed to be addressed, the kitchen manager bought some dog some food and bowls so I assumed they were going to continue to take care of them but that was not the case, the kitchen staff and manager turned on me once I started taking care of the dogs. They threw there bedding out and I would replace it, every time I would replace it they threw it out again and said the dogs cannot stay on the patio, so I went and bought them a tent and got permission from the operations manager to put the tent up in a specific area that was fenced in with a gate so they would have a safe and shaded place to stay, once I put the tent up I put them in the fenced area and closed the gate only to be told by another staff member "were not closing the gate we walk through here" Eventually someone on the property broke the tent trying to take it down and I had to throw the tent away. On hot days I wanted to bring the old dog Chico inside the meeting hall to cool down, he was very old and sick, a staff member was rude and mad at me for trying to help them and told me no he can't come in, no one paid any attention to these dogs. The old dog would breath extremely heavy and obviously looked like he was going to die soon, everyone there including staff would just walk by him like he did not even exist. On a very hot day on May 23rd 2025 the little old male dog Chico was very sick, I've grown attached to both him and the little girl at this time, he was lethargic and had his head hanging, I brought him in the meeting hall to cool down, he was dying, I told staff and everyone there, "look his dying someone need to do something" they did not care one bit, no compassion at all for this little dog dying. I had to leave and do a job I was assigned to for an hour, it was a work to stay program, when I came back they told me Chico is dead, he died outside on the side of the building in the extreme heat. They put his body in a trash bag and right on the side of a trash barrel, no one cared at all. Souls Harbor has a spot in a field in the back where they bury deceased dogs, the directors dogs are buried they along with several others. It's a massive field, a few acres I believe. I planned on burying Chico back there the next day, instead, two residents took his body in the trash bag, loaded him in one of the two Souls Harbor transport vehicles and dumped his body somewhere on the road, they took him right in front of me laughing and joking about it stating "this looks sus" as in suspicious. They took off for ten minutes and came right back so they dumped him like a piece of trash on the road. I thought they were going to go bury him but instead they commit one more cruel gesture to this sweet soul they totally neglected. I posted on FB that they did this and the assistant director replied to my post stating and I quote "U had the opportunity to remove the body yourself at which time you didn't claim, we don't run a animal shelter and never will. Maybe u should leave to have some time to mourn" end quote. They are cruel, dishonest, practice favoritism and animal cruelty, I've witnessed all of this hands on. I've opened a YouTube channel called "Souls Harbor Dallas animal cruelty" where you can see videos of the dying dog they dumped on the road and a video where I caught the warehouse manager clearly stating "there talking about dumping the dog on the side of the road" "I told them not to"

Soul's Harbor is a great group of people. We had a mix up with a driver but they got it smoothed out and we were able to make a furniture donation. I hope others will support them, they do great things to help people!

By far the best people to donate to if we are talking convenience. They contact you very soon after you complete the donation form to confirm and the day they come is MUCH sooner than most donation places. Many times I’ve tried to donate to other services and they left me hanging. Also the guys who pick up your donations are so quick and so kind. Recommend for anyone looking to donate items.

(Written by Jeanne, not Ron) Two pleasant, efficient gentlemen emptied a Richardson storage unit for us today in icy 27-degree weather. I had communicated with the organization beforehand, so knew they already had a roomful of couches and couldn't take mine. Nor could they take an old style TV stand. Fair enough. They took everything else. I'm so glad I found this organization. It appears to do wonderful work.

Reckless and dangerous driving by this company's truck driver, who illegally and dangerously crossed the HOV barrier from a fully stopped position. I had to slam my brakes hard to avoid an accident. This reckless driver almost hit another barrier and me, again, while deciding to get out of the highway ramp last second. Dashcam still shots with time stamp included with this review.
