About Start Treatment & Recovery Centers

Located in Brooklyn, New York, Start Treatment & Recovery Centers is an African American founded community organization that specializes in addiction recovery for adults. The services available at this facility include medication for opioid use disorder, mental health care and vocational counseling. Telehealth options are also available.

Specialized Care for Hepatitis and HIV/AIDS

Intravenous drug users tend to have a higher chance of being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis. This center can help you address these conditions through testing and treatment. Health education will also be provided along with care navigation services to make sure you’re getting the appropriate care.

Effective Medication Treatment

The medications offered at this facility are buprenorphine and methadone. Both medications are effective at reducing withdrawal symptoms and cravings. This allows you to focus more on your recovery and reduces the chances of relapse.

Individual, family and group therapy are available to assist you with developing coping skills and treating any mental health disorders contributing to your addiction. If necessary, the psychiatrists on staff can prescribe medication for mental health disorders.

Vocational Counseling in Brooklyn

Economic instability can be stressful for clients and potentially put them at risk for relapse. Start Treatment’s Vocational Fulfillment Program is designed to help you attain financial independence through achieving education goals and career goals. They will also guide you in participating in the community through volunteering.

START treatment was a part of this neighborhood long before any family even contemplated moving here. I owe my life to the hard work done by the people here. You cannot judge a facility by who decides to hang out on the street close to the clinic. If you are worried about about the locals bothering you perhaps you should think about helping the homeless issue riddled in this family friendly neighborhood. If people had somewhere to go, they would not choose to hang out by a methadone program. Would you?

This place does not belong in a neighborhood full of young families. Their clients/patients are always half passed out, harassing women, and gathering by the subway entrances.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehabs provide a space for clients to focus exclusively on their recovery while receiving intensive supervision and support. Inpatient treatment centers provide housing and food and most offer round-the-clock clinical care. Their primary treatment modalities typically consist of addiction counseling using various psychotherapeutic methods, including CBT, DBT, RBT, and motivational interviewing. Many rehabs also provide specialized services for clients with co-occurring addiction and mental illness. Recovery-focused life skills training and holistic therapies are other common services.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Clients who enroll in an intensive outpatient program (IOP) are typically either in early recovery or are experiencing a crisis that increases their relapse risk. These programs promote clients' sustained sobriety through robust support, including multiple, extended care sessions per week. Intensive outpatient treatment often encompasses an array of services, including psychotherapy, recovery education, and evidence-based holistic therapies, such as acupuncture and meditation. Many outpatient rehabs also offer medication assisted treatment (MAT).
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
The Express Short-term Detoxification program is a short-term (21–180 day) detoxification program for those with opioid addiction, including heroin and prescription painkillers, who have used for a short period of time and who do not meet the criteria for long-term maintenance.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you choose drug rehab in New York, you'll participate in a variety of treatments that are designed to help you live a drug-free lifestyle. Common methods of treatment include group, individual, and family counseling, medication management, nutrition, exercise, and management of co-occurring mental health disorders.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

On-site family and collateral counseling is available for those enrolled at the clinic if they meet the criteria for opioid dependency or for those who are not opioid dependent but, with the patient’s consent, want to participate in scheduled family counseling.

Patients with similar rehabilitative needs gather to discuss daily living challenges or to participate in group activities. Additional information is provided for those interested in further self-help recovery resources such as Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and; Methadone Anonymous (MA).

Individual counseling focuses on each patient’s issues relating to opioid dependency including co-addictions, such as alcohol and tobacco, and barriers to achieving a fully functional and productive life. In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

I became addicted to tramadol. After years of chasing this medication, I tried to stop, but I was in danger of stroking out. So I unfortunately became a product of the methadone scene. BUT it was permission to give up. Now this place should be under Audit&review. I did exactly what I set out to do. I detoxed. BUT before that happened, I made mentle notes. When people are dealing with a culture that they don't have to like, they take certain liberties. And I allowed it. My medical Dr. Told me he'd take over once it was safe for my health. Eventually I switched from methadone to suboxon. Here's why I loathe this particular building. They are taking advantage of people under a certain tax bracket. I was told by the chief Dr,that if I went up anymore, I'd certainly die. He left, and the new Dr. Told me,the "E.K.G"was bogus. And I could go over 200 Ma's. Wrong. I couldn't breath, and so I made my mind up that I'd go down every week, regardless how much I'd suffer. I think people should be better then the people they are treating. A MAN HAD BEEN LOCKED IN THE CLINIC AFTER CLOSING HOURS. HE WOKE UP AT 7PM. THE METHADONE ROOM WAS LEFT WIDE OPEN. THE WHOLE SECURITY TEAM WAS LET GO. THIS WAS NOT THE MAN'S FAULT.THEY KNOW THE MAJORITY OF PATIENTS ARE STILL DOING HEROIN,AND THOSE GASTLY XANAX.THEY ARE NODDING OUT BEFORE THEY GET THEIR DOSE . MOVING FORWARD A YEAR OR SO. HE WAS USING THE BATHROOM AND WAS BEING TOLD TO HURRY UP IN THE BATHROOM AS THEY WERE CLOSING. THE CASE MANAGER VARGES, WHO USED TO HAVE A HERION PROBLEM. BY ALL ACCOUNTS HE DESERVED HIS POSITION. SO BECAUSE THEY GOT IN TROUBLE FOR NOT CHECKING FOR NODDERS WHO FALL ASLEEP IN THE PHONE ROOM,AND SINCE A LOT PPL WERE LET GO. VARGES DECIDED TO BEAT HIM UP BECAUSE HE WANTED TO WASH HIS HANDS. HE BEAT UP A DEFENSELESS HOMELESS MAN WHO WAS THE WEAKER OF THE TWO. I CAN'T LIST EVERYTHING ON HERE. BUT THIS PLACE NEEDS TO BE AUDITED AND UNDER REVIEW. I'M GREATFUL FOR THEIR IGNORENCE, OR I'D PROBABLY STILL BE THERE. I'VE BEEN DOING WELL,AND NEVER WANT TO EXPERIENCE ANOTHER DETOX. BUT I'M SICK TO MY STOMACH THAT PEOPLE WHO ARE SUSPOSE TO BE BETTER THEN THE PEOPLE THEY SERVE,ARE ACTUALLY, AT THE END OF THE DAY ARE ONLY CONCERNED ABOUT QUOTAS AND BONUSES. I SHOULD BE GREATFUL,BECAUSE IT WAS THE SOCIAL WORKER'S,AND THEIR BEHAVIOR THATMADE ME WANT TO STOP ABUSING TRAMADOL&GET OUT OF THAT" HOTEL CALIFORNIA"CLINIC . AND THE WORSE THING. WHITEPEOPLE CAN'T GET A SIMPLE LOW WAGE JOB. IF YOU SEE A CAUCASIAN, WORK IN A PREDOMINANTLY BLACK BUSINESS, CHANCES ARE;THEY ARE GAY. AND IT JUST SO HAPPENS THE 2 MEN ARE GAY. I'M USUALLY RIGHT. BUT I OBSERVED WELL. I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE GAY ISSUE, I CARE ABOUT THE DOUBLE STANDARDS AND NYC LIVING IN THE PAST. WHITE PEOPLE ARE THE ENEMY HERE, UNLESS THEY ARE GAY. I'M GLAD I'M GONE.
