About Eastern Long Island Hospital – Detox

Timber Ridge Treatment Center is an inpatient behavioral health care center for adolescent males in Gold Hill, North Carolina. They accept clients between the ages of 12 and 17 who are struggling with a range of conditions, including substance abuse. The program lasts around six to eight months, but your stay can be shorter or longer depending on your needs.

Something that I like about this facility is that their programs feel adventurous and fun, not super clinical. The facility is designed to seem like a camp retreat and not a rehab. They take a peer approach to treatment, which means you’ll learn life skills and overcome your challenges by engaging with others, testing your limits, and forming bonds with your fellow residents.

Some of the on site activities you can participate in include hiking, canoeing, and backpacking. When you’re not out exploring, you’ll attend individual and family counseling sessions to help you understand and work through your condition. If you’re facing a co-occurring drug or alcohol addiction, they offer a special 12 Step program to help you reach recovery.

Another special feature of this facility is their on campus learning program, which is called the Uwharrie Learning Center. They offer a hands on approach to learning and will make sure you don’t fall behind on your schoolwork. If you need individual tutoring that’s available as well.

A few former clients said they absolutely loved their time in this program and benefited so much from the things they learned. However, others report difficult working conditions for the residents and some negative interactions with the staff.

My son went into this facility with better behavior than 11 months later when he returned home. He is more defiant and aggressive than ever before. They restrained him and he tells me now that he enjoyed the wrestling with the staff there because they would disrespect the kids constantly. He came home cussing and screaming when things don t go his way. That had never happened before. Apparently that s allowed there and even encouraged there. He was the youngest one in there at 12 and learned nothing but how to manipulate the system and others to get anything he wants. Works great on the grandparents. He came home angrier and more rebellious. He did learn how to throw gang signs up there so that s great. He was seriously behind on school work because he was allowed to just get up and walk away from any situation he wanted to. The staff was horrendously understaffed, underpaid, overworked. Many different replacements while he was up there. And very few members of the hands on staff members had been there for more than a year. The kids did nothing but carry rocks and saw wood. Only once did he go to the lake and use canoes. Forced to carry the large rocks lining the trails making room for expansion. They are required to pay the kids by law. And I can t remember the exact number but it was less than 50 cent a day. The food was of poor quality. Mostly canned mass produced garbage full of carbs but no nutrients. Lunch was a sandwich and apple and chips. They were given snacks between meals consisting of lornadoon cookies or something similar. But to supplement that they cooked around an open fire in a large log tent covered with a tarp. I have a picture of my son under the cook tent and the tent had caught on fire while they were cooking. The boys tent setups are plywood and in the winter it gets down into the teens at night. When it gets really cold they take all the kids down to the indoor office and they sleep on the floor. There are kids there with sexual behavior problems and sexual abuse charges sleeping cramped on the floor together. According to my son. My son was made to use the handsaw often. He had blisters on his hands by the end of that winter he spent there. He made all sorts of friends with criminal records and behavioral issues and has become a much better as a thief and liar since he has made those friends. The councilors don t care about you and your child. They don t follow up. They don t schedule therapy sessions for both parents. And no family therapy is offered. Just a vague description of your kids behavior. No plan. Nothing. This isn t a fun educational camping experience. It s a workhouse that make a ton of money to simply work, and poorly babysit teenage boys. No hiking or exercise. No team building activities. Nothing. Just manual labor building more onto this facility. Or replacing old logs for the larger tents like the kitchen tent that caught fire and they employed my child to help extinguish the fire. They had no fire extinguishers according to my son. They threw sand on it as directed by staff. This place looks great on the website. But look at those big rocks beside those pathways. That s what your kid gets to do up there. Move rocks, saw logs, and fight amongst themselves and staff. Not the wilderness experience you would hope for and expect. I wouldn t recommend this place to my worst enemy. They simply don t care. They re there to make a dollar.

Not enough supervision for the amount of kids per group!!! Kids disappear for so long they have to call the cops to help find them and don't notify the parents until 4hrs later that they can't find your child and have the cops out looking for him. The cops stopped looking about 45 minutes before my husband arrived. They said there was 174 acres and the employees assured my husband he was still on camp and that he had only been missing since 6pm. They notified me around 7pm. It took my husband about 1 & 1/2 hours to get there. About 30 minutes later some stranger came pulling up to the camp with my son in her car. Thank the good Lord above that she was an honest Christian woman that brought him back to us so we could take him home with us where we know our child is taken care of and well supervised!!! She was going to her daughter's house about a mile away from camp and she found him hiding in the ditch at her daughter's house because he got cold! She stated that he was with her and her daughter for at least 4hrs at their house before he finally told them where he ran away from. My son also said he ate lunch at 12pm but didn't eat dinner at 5pm but they're trying to tell me he was only gone for like 2hrs. No matter what a child shouldn't be able to do this with the correct supervision!!! A lot of other things I don't agree with too!!!

Accepted Insurance

Eastern Long Island Hospital – Detox works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I'm so incredibly thankful for the time, effort, and support these people pour out into these children learning to become respectful men. It's not easy to work through mental and emotional trauma. These people are licensed and trained to handle all aspects with dignity and respect. Yes, I was hesitant at first. I researched it in depth and talked with multiple people before we did paper work. I cannot express my gratefulness enough! Mr. Miller is very patient, and all the camp leader I have met. The cook is a super sweet lady and cares for these boys in a way that takes a special heart.

At first glance this place seems like a WWll waste land, but its not. Although the restraints can be questionable at times, they are not abusive. Kids fight back, what can you do? They give you 3 meals a day. However, some of the meals can be questionable, they provide nutrition and some of the meals are actually good. You get a shower everyday. You get school an physical activity. The things staff members ask residents to do are not difficult what so ever. All you have to do is listen. This place teaches you how to have integrity, how to be responsible and how to be accountable with your actions. I see a lot of people saying- "Forced labor, horrible weather conditions". It is not forced, it is prompted then it is up to the kid to do it or not, and if they don't then they get written up. That's how the real world works. You or your son will get a job and their boss will tell them what they need to do. If they don't then they get fired. The weather is the weather, cant do anything about that. This program isn't meant to be fun (although it actually can be fun at times) its meant to be hard and challenging. This was a life changing experience for me and i don't regret a second of time i spent there.

I could not think of a more inhumane place to send your children. They do not properly restrain children here. They put them in chokeholds and slam them to the ground. Every single staff member here is required to be CPI certified yet they never utilize proper CPI skills and instead straight up abuse the children here. The trauma program is an absolute joke. The children that are sent here look like skeletons when they are sent home due to forced physical labor and improper nourishment. There is absolutely zero time to process real issues. Sending a child who has psychological problems and "conduct disorder" to a place that is supposed to "scare them straight" approach will do nothing but make them buck the system even more. All of these "treatment centers" which are actually just "scared straight programs" need to be shut down.

I absolutely loved this place! I’m W125 I was there at the age 12-13. I’ve benefited so much from the things I’ve learned from this place! I’m 36 now. I don’t get the bad reviews. That’s insane! Probably from parents who enable their children. Timber ridge turns troubled youth into hard working young men that learn how to better deal with everyday situations that come up in life. When I was a child I was very impulsive and because I had no adult guidance I never learned how to deal with my feelings or how to express them! Timber ridge taught me! From Mr. Smith, Ms. Gabriel, to the cafeteria lady they all helped!
