About UPMC Mercy

UPMC Mercy — Pittsburgh is a Catholic hospital providing mental health and substance abuse treatment programs in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a short distance from the Monongahela River. This location offers several primary and specialty care services in addition to its addiction and behavioral health programs. They serve adult clients.

UPMC Mercy has an 18 bed unit for medically monitored detoxification. They also maintain a team of peer support specialists to help clients navigate treatment and explore post treatment options. Services offered include:

Medically monitored detox is the safest way for clients to withdraw from drugs and alcohol and is often the first step in treating addiction. Detox takes place at the hospital so staff can help clients manage their withdrawal symptoms and prepare them for the next step in their treatment plan.

UPMC Mercy uses MAT to treat opioid addiction. Following an assessment, clients are prescribed an FDA approved medication to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms. MAT is combined with outpatient counseling services and is not provided independently.

Clients in crisis can visit (or be referred to) UPMC Mercy for stabilization. During this time, they will undergo assessment and receive therapeutic support services. Once stable, clients will be referred to an outpatient program or other support service. This service is also available over the telephone.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient rehabs specialize in providing comprehensive care for clients who choose to remain in their homes and communities during treatment. Their services may include transitional support for clients stepping down from intensive inpatient programming. Ambulatory medical detox may be provided for clients at low risk for withdrawal complications. Many programs include evening, night, and weekend services to accommodate clients who are working professionals or caregivers. Addiction counseling and life skills training are common treatment modalities.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab provides clients with an opportunity to focus solely on their sobriety away from the stressors of the home and workplace. Clients receive housing, food, and intensive clinical supervision. They also typically engage in multiple addiction counseling sessions each week, including daily individual, group, and/or family sessions. Most programs also prioritize recovery-focused life skills training, including courses in relapse prevention. Many facilities offer evidence-based holistic therapies, such as yoga and meditation.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients receiving services from a rehab aftercare program are usually stable and in the maintenance phase of recovery, having completed detox and/or intensive inpatient treatment. Rehab aftercare services can vary widely based on clients' individual and evolving needs, but often include peer coaching, relapse prevention support, 12 step program induction, and medical, mental health, and social service referrals. Individual care plans are typically developed by the client in partnership with their case manager and care team.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
With a partial hospitalization program (PHP), you can participate in intensive rehabilitation treatment with the ability to return home at the end of the day. For a weekly minimum of 20 hours, a partial hospitalization program can take place up to 5 days a week for an average of 90 days. During PHP treatment, you can receive relapse prevention strategies, medication management, individual and group therapy, and other behavioral therapy interventions.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
Because the severity of withdrawal symptoms can fluctuate, constant monitoring under 24-hour clinical care in Pennsylvania is recommended for early recovery. As you undergo detox, medical staff will supervise your health and ensure severe symptoms do not develop or threaten your life. Professional counselors will also be available to treat mental and emotional health needs.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Pennsylvania is devoted to the treatment of addiction. Levels of care, treatment methods, and settings differ, but the aim of each program is to end drug dependency and empower participants to achieve long-term recovery.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

I had surgery this morning. We parked in the wrong garage, completely on the opposite side of the hospital. I have a visible walking disability. The escort put me in a wheelchair and took me to where we needed to be!!! From the lady who helped us in the parking garage, to EVERYONE who was involved in my care, it was the most wonderful care that I could ask for. Just like a previous review that I read, I would give 10 stars, if I could. I can only hope that everyone involved in my care, can see my review!!! Thank You to all!!!!!

I had surgery here this morning. The staff was top notch ! I was quite nervous and they all took time explaining everything to me and really made me comfortable. They made my procedure much easier to go through than I expected. I would rate them 10 stars if I could and I would recommend to anyone !!!

Terrible hospital. Need to talk to the 5 people to make a simple decision just to get discharged. God forbid any doctor here has to come in on a weekend to lift a single finger. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone. I have a 3 yr old that can make decisions in more timely manner than grown adults at this place can.

Unfortunately i’ve encountered so many accidents since the start of this year, and always ended up at Mercy Hospital, and was practically neglected every time I went. Whether it being not able to find a vein, needing medicine, A BROKEN ARM, or even simple requests for water or blankets. There’s about a handful of people there who actually listened to me and helped me. I wouldn’t recommend anyone going here unless if you want to lay there with barely any treatment for a week, or they kick you out extremely early and don’t even produce proper medications for you.

Very disappointed in patient relation team. My 90 year old aunt was admitted to Mercy ER at ambulatory suggestion for suspected blood clot. She did not have blood clot and received good care but she went in with her wedding ring on and came back to assisted living with no wedding ring. I have placed three calls to patient relations. Each time I have been told some one will do some checking and will follow up with me. No one has ever followed up. I’ve been told they wouldn’t take the ring off (it was on impacted arm), asked if I had an appraisal, told me they would check with their supervisor and get back to me no one has ever returned call.

First experience at Mercy was unexpectedly fantastic! Only that ER experiences are usually LONG! Needed to go to an ER for eye issues on a Saturday. Walked into the ER at 11:30 am and was discharged 3 hours later! That included a dilation which you have to wait for some time before any tests can be run…the staff was friendly as could be and the care was thorough! If I ever need an ER again, I would choose Mercy over the 2 other closer suburban hospitals where I have never waited less than 6 hours and the staff always seems stretched to the limit! Clean too!!!! Thank you to the Mercy ER staff!!!
