About Emerald Coast Behavioral Hospital

Located in Panama City, Florida, Emerald Coast Behavioral Hospital is an impressive substance misuse and mental health clinic. They have multiple locations, but their main campus houses an 86 bed inpatient psychiatric hospital and an outpatient center. This allows them to offer multiple levels of care, ensuring treatment options regardless of outside commitments or the severity of addiction. They also operate three outpatient centers throughout the Florida Panhandle, but here, I’ll focus on their main campus.

Emerald Coast Behavioral Hospital provides services for children, adolescents, and adults. Their Child and Adolescent Programs are designed for individuals aged 4 through 17, addressing various mental health issues. For this level of programming they offer both inpatient and outpatient care. Therapy options include individual therapy, family counseling and group therapy. They also provide educational support along with holistic approaches.

For adults ages 18 and older, their Adult Programs offer both inpatient and outpatient care as well. They provide similar therapy programs, including individual and group counseling, family therapy, and holistic support. They use medication management and cognitive behavioral therapy as well to ensure that you receive the best possible care during your time in treatment.

Specialized Care for Military Members and Veterans

What really stood out to me is that they offer unique services for military members and veterans. They address conditions like PTSD and other dual diagnoses, focusing on trauma that may contribute to addiction. Their program is designed to help build resilience, which in turn supports long-term sobriety and reintegration into daily life. They also offer family counseling and aftercare services to facilitate a smoother transition back to civilian life.

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. As family, we were given no information for days, given multiple different “release” days and “ill call by 10 am” with no return phone calls. They were terrible to my family members, and all staff does when an issue is presented is say “oh, that’s not in my jurisdiction”, but when you follow up with whos problem it’s supposed to be, the same answer comes up. ECBH is the most non-empathetic mental health hospital, and the patients aren’t cared for, left to be harmed by other high-risk patients, and use a “second opinion” to keep patients, despite them never having had meaningul conversations besides looking at a file. They prescribed the wrong medication for a physical condition, then added to his stay because he wouldn’t take it as it had given him issues before. Bryana specifically is the worst staff member we had an issue with (mostly because she’s only one of the maybe 2-3 people that we spoke to, and the only reason for that is because she HAD to meet us. There were multiple lies, and she admitted that as part of his “care team” that she actually hadn’t even read his file to see why he was being held involuntarily. She admitted that there was major improvement, a safe home, and a support system. I asked if he could have a care team that would actually work in his favor, and was met with “well I can’t help you”. One of the “doctors” that are supposed to be helping these people is a teledoc. They are terrible to family, don’t listen about any concern, and will go under your nose simply to avoid doing their job. I cannot express in enough words how much this hospital sucks. I would recommend anywhere else if you have the option. I’m never a person to down on medical staff, but these staff, minus the techs and nurse who hands over the phone, do not care about patients and aren’t interested in doing anything besides making their lives easier.

This place is genuinely filthy. I was appalled at watching the "Housekeeper" do her job. She did just enough for it to look decent and keep the nurses station pretty. Diarrhea and blood around the toilet, did not mop after a patient threw up multiple times in the floor, hair and debris EVERYWHERE, (including being stuck to walls), tabletops were never cleaned, let alone the floor properly swept or mopped. I fear for what the cafeteria looks like behind the scenes. You can tell there are a few nurses that care about the patients, but most need to be in a different line of work since they like to pick and choose who to help. This place needs to be investigated.

My daughter had to go there a month ago. In her words it was "hell on earth" as she was medically ignored. No one actually spoke to her to help her through what she had going on, they only wanted to push medicine onto her. They held her longer than the 72 hours for no reason as nothing changed. One night they had a child "raging" and banging on doors, screaming and yelling. Staff did nothing to stop the child except confining the child to an area and hold a door closed nor did they try to comfort the other children who were scared because of it. Because she was the oldest she had to comfort them until she had her own panic attack. She was only able to speak to the actual doctor one time through an iPad. I would get three different versions of how she was doing every day because no one actually talked with her or apparently each other. Her one call a day she would get you couldnt even have a conversation because staff would be talking and laughing loudly enough by her that you could not make out anything she was trying to say. Now after all of that and her coming out worse than she was before they have sent a bill for more than TWICE the amount of the bill we were given after she was released. This place is a joke for anyone who actually needs help, if possible do not let your children go there. Also for her Outpatient appointments they tried to call a completely random number instead of my number that they had no issue calling when they wanted to put her on different medicines so her appointments have been delayed by a month.

Accepted Insurance

Please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Emerald Coast Behavioral Hospital works with several private insurance providers, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Clients typically choose inpatient rehab when they are in early recovery or are experiencing a crisis that puts them at an increased risk of relapse. They reside at the treatment center for the length of their program, which may range from two weeks to more than 18 months, depending on the program design. Intensive psychotherapy is often the primary treatment modality, but clients in inpatient care may also receive holistic treatment and recovery-focused life skills training.

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) involve frequent and robust therapeutic sessions for clients requiring high-level care. Clients may engage in a combination of medication assisted treatment (MAT), addiction counseling, recovery skills training, and holistic therapies for a minimum of nine and a maximum of 20 hours per week. Intensive outpatient rehab is designed primarily for persons in early recovery, those exiting detox or inpatient care, and those at an elevated relapse risk.

Rehab aftercare programs are a collection of highly individualized services designed to promote long-term recovery. These services evolve as your needs change. Case managers and recovery teams typically begin formulating the rehab aftercare service plan early in the recovery process to facilitate your reintegration back into the home, workplace, and community.

If a person with a substance use disorder continually denies their problem or refuses to get treatment, a drug intervention in Florida may be necessary. Intervention services can help mediate the intervention by providing an addiction expert. This professional can de-escalate situations and facilitate a healthier discussion between the individual and their loved ones. Specialists can also help families handle issues they don't know how to navigate on their own.

Often referred to as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers an intensive treatment option that allows individuals to return home at night. PHP treatment typically requires a minimum of 20 hours a week for an average of 90 days. Participants attend daily therapeutic sessions, receive medication management, and have access to skilled medical professionals. While costs can vary, most insurance will fully or partially cover a partial hospitalization program.

At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Florida provides quality treatment to help individuals overcome dependency related to a wide range of addictive substances. Programs address both the physical and mental aspects of addiction in order to help you make a full recovery.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

As a short term therapeutic method, motivational interviewing in Florida requires only a couple of sessions. During these sessions, you'll have the opportunity to talk about your circumstances and any discrepancies between your current situation and future goals. You'll then decide for yourself what changes you want to make.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.
