About Emerald Coast Behavioral Hospital

Located in Panama City, Florida, Emerald Coast Behavioral Hospital is an impressive substance misuse and mental health clinic. They have multiple locations, but their main campus houses an 86 bed inpatient psychiatric hospital and an outpatient center. This allows them to offer multiple levels of care, ensuring treatment options regardless of outside commitments or the severity of addiction. They also operate three outpatient centers throughout the Florida Panhandle, but here, I’ll focus on their main campus.

Emerald Coast Behavioral Hospital provides services for children, adolescents, and adults. Their Child and Adolescent Programs are designed for individuals aged 4 through 17, addressing various mental health issues. For this level of programming they offer both inpatient and outpatient care. Therapy options include individual therapy, family counseling and group therapy. They also provide educational support along with holistic approaches.

For adults ages 18 and older, their Adult Programs offer both inpatient and outpatient care as well. They provide similar therapy programs, including individual and group counseling, family therapy, and holistic support. They use medication management and cognitive behavioral therapy as well to ensure that you receive the best possible care during your time in treatment.

Specialized Care for Military Members and Veterans

What really stood out to me is that they offer unique services for military members and veterans. They address conditions like PTSD and other dual diagnoses, focusing on trauma that may contribute to addiction. Their program is designed to help build resilience, which in turn supports long-term sobriety and reintegration into daily life. They also offer family counseling and aftercare services to facilitate a smoother transition back to civilian life.

Accepted Insurance

Emerald Coast Behavioral Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Clients typically choose inpatient rehab when they are in early recovery or are experiencing a crisis that puts them at an increased risk of relapse. They reside at the treatment center for the length of their program, which may range from two weeks to more than 18 months, depending on the program design. Intensive psychotherapy is often the primary treatment modality, but clients in inpatient care may also receive holistic treatment and recovery-focused life skills training.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) involve frequent and robust therapeutic sessions for clients requiring high-level care. Clients may engage in a combination of medication assisted treatment (MAT), addiction counseling, recovery skills training, and holistic therapies for a minimum of nine and a maximum of 20 hours per week. Intensive outpatient rehab is designed primarily for persons in early recovery, those exiting detox or inpatient care, and those at an elevated relapse risk.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs are a collection of highly individualized services designed to promote long-term recovery. These services evolve as your needs change. Case managers and recovery teams typically begin formulating the rehab aftercare service plan early in the recovery process to facilitate your reintegration back into the home, workplace, and community.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
If a person with a substance use disorder continually denies their problem or refuses to get treatment, a drug intervention in Florida may be necessary. Intervention services can help mediate the intervention by providing an addiction expert. This professional can de-escalate situations and facilitate a healthier discussion between the individual and their loved ones. Specialists can also help families handle issues they don't know how to navigate on their own.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Often referred to as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers an intensive treatment option that allows individuals to return home at night. PHP treatment typically requires a minimum of 20 hours a week for an average of 90 days. Participants attend daily therapeutic sessions, receive medication management, and have access to skilled medical professionals. While costs can vary, most insurance will fully or partially cover a partial hospitalization program.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Florida provides quality treatment to help individuals overcome dependency related to a wide range of addictive substances. Programs address both the physical and mental aspects of addiction in order to help you make a full recovery.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

As a short term therapeutic method, motivational interviewing in Florida requires only a couple of sessions. During these sessions, you'll have the opportunity to talk about your circumstances and any discrepancies between your current situation and future goals. You'll then decide for yourself what changes you want to make.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

If you are someone with anxiety or OCD who needs help avoid this place at all costs. You'll be bunked with mostly drug addicts who are allowed to yell at each other and talk about violent topics without intervention all day (very triggering to someone with OCD!) -- I went in for anxiety and OCD and PMDD and was denied my birth control which was absolutely NECESSARY to have to avoid PMDD flare up and keep my hormones regulated. Apparently if you come in with your own medication they can still not give it to you if you come in after 5pm! AND THEY DON'T WARN YOU OF THIS AT ALL. Completely defeating the point of going in!!! I ended up having more anxiety there because I was denied my pill-- I would have been better off going to the regular ER and staying there for anxiety. This place treats you like a prisoner if you're just coming in for mental health help, they seem to prioritize druggies who hospital hop for free places to bunk just so they can come back in 2 weeks. Nurse there my first night (11pm - 05/20/25) snidely told me I was clearly in there for "more than just birth control" my first night as if she was at all familiar with my condition. I went in voluntarily for HELP and I knew why I was there and what my problems are with PMDD and the anxiety it causes and how much worse it makes OCD and her comment was not necessary. Which by the way, they also denied a war veteran suffering PTSD his anxiety medication right in front of me so that was very cool. Nice to know we treat the people who served our country like that. Do not take a loved one here ever. They will be treated like cattle. Whichever nurse was working zone 3 on 05/21/25 around 10pm was very lovely though and she helped me through a panic attack at bed time. Also whoever was nurse around 4pm on 05/20/25 was super kind and talked to me while I threw up from the stress of coming in there.

I want to share my experience with this facility. While I found Mike and most of the group sessions to be beneficial, I have significant concerns about the overall management and practices here. It feels like the facility is run by corporate interests, which has led to some questionable approaches to patient care. During my stay, I was required to speak with police officers before leaving, which felt unnecessary and uncomfortable. As a veteran, it was disheartening to see that my situation was not handled with the sensitivity it required. I felt like the staff could have been more supportive, especially in addressing my needs related to PTSD. While there are positive aspects to the program, I believe it's crucial for veterans to seek alternatives that prioritize their well-being. I recommend consulting a social worker for better options, as the VA does cover other facilities that may offer more appropriate care. Overall, I cannot fully recommend this place as it stands.

My entire treatment team have been amazing. I have never had a therapist take so much time to help me understand my condition. Zack is the absolute best with PTSD. He just had a way of explaining, breaking down things and understanding his patients in such a unique way that I feel I had personalized care even in a group setting. Claire has helped so much with getting my medications balanced. She instills so much positivity and hope while ensuring you get the right medications for your needs. Everyone at the front have helped me several times with paperwork and even silly things like helping me get a soda. I really don’t have enough words to express my gratitude that Emerald Coast has been with me every step of the way on my journey.

Bethany one of the nurses has no compassion and or empathy if I could give zero stars I would the amount of problems I’ve had with her and the problems that my loved one is having with her is ridiculous she shouldn’t be working at a place like this as she is causing mental health issues with anyone she comes in contact with it’s frustrating and the amount of lies that come out of her mouth you can’t trust a damn thing she says she has only added to the stress of it all I’m very frustrated with this whole place for continuing to let her work there someone has to be aware of her behavior

I stayed 6 days here and and every single time, I had an emotional breakdown, nobody will help me, they declined when I told him, I didn't want to talk to my mother or father. There was one nurse who I've seen in a couple of other peoples reviews yes. Nurse Francis was horrible. She was rude and always yelling, even though they knew that I was sensitive to loud noises. She repeatedly refused to give me my stuffed animal which I used for emotional support. I was never given my allergy medicine. The only reason it's getting 2 stars is because one of the nurses, Michael, was absolutely amazing and made me feel really comfortable in this comforting me when I was in an emotional breakdown. I hope I never have to go here again worst experience I've ever had. They wouldn't even call me by my preferred name ever. I hate my given name because it doesn't mean anything remotely kind. I would not ever recommend. If you are ever in a real emotional crisis, never go here.
