I had a very bad experience at George Washington hospital. I was sent to the emergency room from wound care to get x-rayed and blood work done. I was in the waiting area for several hours, waiting to be seen. Then when I was seen, they started talking about being me being discharged. Next,. I asked could they wrap my feet and they acted like they couldn't do it. And said "did I have yourfeet wrapped before I came in", and I told him yes because I was coming from wound care. The guy responded as if he didn't want to wrap my feet, which I didn't understand because that's what I came in for. I feel like I was discriminated against and I really feel as though I didn't get the proper service. They were rushing me out of there and I've been in there waiting on them all day and then at the end is like they couldn't getting me out of there quick enough. The staff didn't put a real wrap on my feet so I wasn't able to even get home comfortably. I barely made it home because my feet wasn't wrapped right it took me way longer to get to my home because of how much pain I was in. I was very disrespected and mistreated and I really don't feel as though I deserve any of that treatment. I'm just a patient trying to get my health back together. Thank you

The Wound Care Clinic showed expertise and efficiency; I was surprised by how many patients were there, and once I was seen, my wounds were treated, I got supplies for rebandaging, and I got an appointment for follow-up.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

This Emergency department is extremely unprofessional. I experienced the worst service here recently. 1)every employee is rude! No empathy or compassion just ppl going with the motion. 2) I was discharged from the ER after 2 hours with a broken nose and open wounds without them being dressed (covered). I had to go to my primary doctor for that. 3) I was only offered over the counter ibuprofen for the pain but I can hear my white male counter part on the other side of the curtain being offered real medicine! I’m a black woman btw so that tells you something. I guess my broken nose, broken face, busted lip, and concussion wasn’t enough for anything stronger. 4) The ambulance and ER staff couldn’t provide any information on the accident or what might have been given to me in the ambulance. They didn’t know where I was picked up from or anything. Does this sound like an emergency department that cares about your life? Thank God I’m alive because it’s his doing! They barely did anything to help.

I had a whipple procedure done in April 2024. Dr. Lin and his colleagues and staff were great. Since the surgery, i have been back to the hospital many times, to see Dr. Lin, Dr. Scher, Dr. Todd, and many other health care providers, nurses, and staff. I have been very pleased eith the level of care i received.

In dc for a trip. Broke my collarbone completely through over the weekend and they cleared me to travel home for surgery. No pain meds for the twos days until weekend was over, wouldn’t give me my X-rays, no aftercare docs, nothing. Made the process excruciating

This nurse was exceptionally helpful to me and my family. She always maintained a positive attitude and prioritized our needs above her own responsibilities. I want to express my gratitude to George Washington Hospital for hiring such a remarkable nurse. Thank you for sharing the photo.

The Negligence Of This Hospital With The Doctors & Nurses Is Beyond Grotesque. You Have ToOo Bed & Pleed For The Basic Things. I Have Been Out Of Toilet Paper For A Week & NoOo One Has Taken The Time To Bring Me Some After I Have Asked Over & Over Again. The Negligence Of Medication Before Dialysis Is Unbelievable. The Doctors & Nurses Don't Care If Your Crying & Suffering In Pain. I Don't Not Recommended This Hospital ToOo Anyone. The Food Is Always Cold & Undercooked. I Complained & The Staff Was Like Thats Just How The Kitchen Is. I've Had ToOo Orded Food From Outside To Have Just A Decent Meal. The Hospital Is Not Sanitary Whatsoever. I've Gotten Sick Because Of The Hospital Not Being Sanitary. I Haven't Ever Been To A Hospital This Bad In My Life. The Doctors & Nurses Will Have You Stressed To The Point You Wanna Cry & Have Anxiety So Bad. You Can Complain But It Doesn't Get You Anywhere & They Make You The Problem Instead Of Them Taking Accountability. They Will Accuse You Of Being A Drug Addict Even Though You Have No History Of It. Id Recommended Going ToOo A Different Hospital If You Can.

This place botched my girlfriends surgery resulting in excess bleeding, tried to refer her to additional specialists in their network for hemophilia (their own preop blood tests showed normal clotting, so excess bleeding isnt a condition its their bad surgical work), admitted her for the excess blood loss (not necessary), then lost her 5k payment for all these services and she had to hunt it down for them to prove she already paid them once. Their post-op visitation policies were garbage, made it very hard for me and her family to see her. All around trash hospital- go to Sibley in Foxhall if you need care you can schedule elsewhere.

Working in this ER made me physically ill. I was so stressed i got my period twice in 1 month. The 1:1 sitters will look at you sideways if you ask them a question and spend the entire time on the phone not even watching the patient. You have to do every single thing possible as the nurse including take your patients to EVERY scan on top of keeping up with all your patients. The nurses and charge nurses are NASTY and micromanage you. The waiting room is literally disgusting. I would rather die than work one more day for this ER ever again.

Everything was an in and out process, I arrived at 8 pm and left about 12 midnight would of been there longer if I was in the ER , but due to my pregnancy it was smooth, nurse Jamie that’s in labor and delivery was amazing, she checked on me while there to make sure everything was okay . GW has the best labor and delivery service if you ask me .

My father came in for a procedure. When he came in He had no kidney injury or infection, but he acquired a kidney injury and infection while there. He said the sitter that was with him was so mean he was afraid to talk. However, I am grateful for anyone there who did help me get him transferred!

While the quality of service is good, I am not crazy about the administrative and billing side of GW. I am tired of being quoted the wrong co-pay, deductible, etc. I went into the hospital for a MRI and was told I owed $500. This figure was wrong but I was pressured to pay regardless. Not good.
