I cannot express my thanks adequately enough for the staff at Hillside Mission and the Programming they provide. I was almost out of hope when I reached out to the owner. Since then, my loved one is currently sober, participating in life and for the first time, in a long time, I feel like I have them back and there is hope. No one knows what tomorrow holds but today, there is peace. I am beyond grateful to Louis, Tammy, Shameka (forgive me for any misspellings) and the rest of the staff for giving me the best gift a mother could have. Thank you for listening, for being there, for providing the care my loved one needed so desperately and for your continued mission of saving lives.

Levels of Care

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. The length of stay at the detoxification program is determined according to the specific needs of the patient.

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

My boyfriend has been there twice. The first time I was nothing but helpful to the case manager. Unfortunately she outright lied and turned my words against him to try to keep him there. I understand trying to keep someone there but to do it dishonestly is an unethical breach of services. The second time he went there no one called me. I only found out when he called with his hidden cell phone at 2 am. Apparently the case manager told him she was going to have someone else call because she thought I did not want to talk to her. Really?! Not only is that unprofessional but no one called. There is an enormous invasion of privacy because they mandate all calls happen between 12 and 12:15 pm each day with someone listening. For 15 minutes a day patients have a complete stranger listening to their conversations. All patients have basic rights mandated by California and privacy is at the top of the list. Yes, phone privileges are controlled in rehab but to say it has to be supervised treats them like a child. Neither person will talk openly and that defeats what rehab is supposed to do. The facility argues that something I might say upset him and hurts his recovery. Don't you think rehab is where he should experience all ranges of emotions, regardless if they are positive or negative? That way he has a protected space, tools to work through the issue (which he needs), and as a result a lower chance of relapse. Their logic is extremely flawed. I work in the healthcare field and get upset when someone/place acts unethically. I refuse to stand idly by because this type of behavior is what makes this industry look bad. I plan on reporting them to DHCS and the local ombudsman because this is unacceptable.

When my husband was on his relapse, hillside management services was the only one that managed to get Clayton to finish his detox and residential program before moving on to PHP. They gave me updates on him all the time

Hillside truly saved my life and helped start my journey toward long term sobriety and a better more fulfilling life. The whole experience was amazing and I couldn’t have asked for better staff and care while I was there. Please if you’re going through a rough time and can’t seem to stay clean give this program a chance, I promise you won’t regret it. A special thanks to Danny, Ashley and Monica for doing everything they could to help me reach my goals!

I came to California from Mississippi to get sober and this place established the beginning of a solid foundation for me. If it wasn’t for their staff I am not sure I would be alive today!!! They not only took care of me while I was there but made sure that when I left that I was also taken care of. Hillside will always have a special place in my heart. I’ll have two years from fentanyl and all other substances in July!! Thank you guys forever <3

As a first-time inpatient dealing with alcoholism, I didn't know what to expect when I entered treatment at Hillside Mission Recovery. From the moment I arrived, I was met with kindness, compassion, and unwavering support. The detox process, which I feared the most, was made manageable thanks to the attentive and professional staff. My case manager was incredible—everything was clearly explained, and they helped make what could have been an overwhelming experience feel simple and manageable. I had deeply impactful therapy sessions with Jake, whose guidance and insight truly helped me understand and confront the roots of my addiction. Monica was always available for any questions or concerns I had, big or small. Just knowing I could reach out to her gave me so much peace of mind. Every staff member I interacted with was caring, respectful, and genuinely invested in my recovery. I’ve never been in treatment before, and with the tools and support I’ve gained here, I hope I never need to return. The network of people I now have for continued support is amazing, and I feel hopeful and empowered moving forward. Hillside Mission gave me a second chance—and I’m deeply grateful.
