About the Facility
Palos Community Hospital - Behavioral Health offers the full spectrum of behavioral health services including chemical dependency treatment. Palos Community Hospital - Behavioral Health also offers outpatient counseling services and inpatient care.
Medicated-assisted treatment combines medication and therapy to treat clients. Medication is provided to mitigate withdrawal and craving effects while therapy is used to treat the underlying condition.
Medical detox provides a safe space for clients to be weaned off of the abused substance. Clients are monitored by medical professionals who administer medications like Suboxone to minimize withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Once detox is complete, the client receives an individualized treatment plan and transitions to the next step of treatment.
Those in the inpatient program live on campus in a hospital-like setting while they receive treatment. This facility takes a holistic approach, addressing each individual’s mind, body, emotions, and spirit. Clients engage in individual, group, and family therapy to develop vital life skills.
Outpatient care allows clients to attend treatment sessions and return home at the end of the day. Individuals undergo treatment that is similar to the inpatient program, including individual, group, and family therapy.
Aftercare services provide ongoing resources to prevent relapse. These resources include program referrals, peer support groups, and recovery education.
Palos Community Hospital accepts a variety of insurance providers. These providers include Aetna, Amerigroup, United Healthcare, Ambetter, BlueCross/BlueShield, Cigna, and Humana. Clients with out of network benefits are advised to contact their insurance providers to verify their coverage.

Treatment
Alcoholism
Alcohol use disorder (alcoholism) can be severe, moderate, or mild. Symptoms include spending a lot of time drinking, wanting to stop but being unsuccessful, and feeling strong cravings that lead to overuse of alcohol. At any severity level, alcohol addiction is treatable through alcohol rehab in Illinois. Most comprehensive rehab programs include medical detox, inpatient rehab, and ongoing alcohol counseling/support (maintenance).
Drug Addiction
Drug rehab in Illinois is designed to help people recover from addiction to a number of substances. The length of each program and its intensity tend to vary, and the plan of care is based on your individual needs.
Dual Diagnosis
Dual-diagnosis addiction treatment in Illinois focuses on integrated care for individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health conditions. These specialized rehab programs include detox, medication-assisted treatment, residential drug and alcohol rehab, and outpatient programs. Treatment incorporates a combination of trauma-informed and evidence-based therapies — like cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and motivational interviewing— support groups, and skills training to holistically address addiction and co-occurring disorders at the same time, enhancing your mental, physical, and emotional health.
Mental Health and Substance Abuse
Specialized dual-diagnosis rehabs in Illinois, have the expertise to treat both mental health and substance abuse. Usually offered on an inpatient and outpatient basis — depending on your individual needs — these comprehensive treatment programs include medical and psychological support, experiential therapies, counseling, and evidence-based therapeutic interventions aimed at addressing substance use disorders and improving mental health. Typically, you’ll learn how to reframe unhelpful patterns, skills to overcome relapse triggers, and improve your mental health.
Opioid Addiction
Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Levels of Care
Inpatient
Inpatient care provides timely, thorough medical treatment for symptoms you may notice as you start using less of an addictive drug or alcohol. During your stay, you’ll receive psychotherapy, medication and other services that help you begin to function better. When substance abuse or mental illness puts the well-being of you or someone else at serious risk, inpatient care provides protection, security and a path to recovery.
Medically Assisted Detox
During the medically supervised detox process, licensed medical professionals monitor your vitals and administer medications meant to help alleviate the physical symptoms of withdrawal. The process can take between five and seven days, although the actual length depends on your individual needs. In most cases, medically assisted detox is partially, if not fully, covered by insurance.
Intensive Outpatient
Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) enable clients to receive high-level care while living at home. Clients may choose to enter IOP instead of enrolling in inpatient care post-detox or they may transition from an inpatient rehab into IOP. Intensive outpatient treatment involves multiple therapeutic sessions per week and includes a combination of psychotherapy and addiction and recovery education. Many programs also offer medication assisted treatment (MAT) and/or holistic therapies, such as acupuncture and massage.
Outpatient
Clients in outpatient rehab receive a variety of services based on their unique and evolving needs. Typical outpatient treatment modalities include individual, group, and family counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, and community reintegration support. Many programs also provide medication assisted treatment (MAT) for clients recovering from alcohol and/or opioid dependency. Clients exiting inpatient treatment or those who are at an elevated risk of relapse may engage in more robust treatment, such as intensive outpatient (IOP) programming.
12-Step
Participants in 12 step programs focus on emotional, psychological, and spiritual growth as the foundation for long-term sobriety. They engage in regular 12 step meetings, which are anonymous, free, and accessible day and night, year-round, in most communities. Participants also receive one-on-one mentoring from a self-selected sponsor. Though the 12 steps of recovery are based on spiritual principles, religious affiliation isn’t required. Specialized formats are available, including programs for seniors, teens, and families.
Aftercare Support
The longer you receive support, the more likely you’ll remain abstinent. That’s why you’ll want to join their free Aftercare Group, which meets for six weeks to reinforce skills you learned during outpatient substance abuse treatment or partial hospitalization at Palos.
24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.
Clinical Services
Animal Therapy
Palos Hospital has an animal-assisted therapy program known as Wags Therapy. Highly trained volunteer handler/dog teams provide therapeutic visits seven days a week to patients who meet their medically approved criteria. Animal therapy (aka pet therapy or animal-assisted therapy) can be very healing, as it allows patients to bond with animals, who give unconditional love. This is particularly useful for those who suffered trauma by the hands of people, who may be able to trust and form closer attachments to animals than humans at certain stages of rehabilitation.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.
Couples Therapy
Good relationships with your loved ones involve joy, intimacy and support. But family and marital relationships also sometimes create stress and conflict. Turn to a neutral therapist at Palos Health for assistance navigating the challenges, making healthy decisions about relationships and strengthening family ties. Couples counseling at Palos helps you prevent, recognize and resolve conflicts in a committed relationship. Their skilled, experienced therapists can guide you and your partner through many issues.
Experiential Therapy
Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.
Family Therapy
You’ll find it easier to take steps that enrich your life when you get support from your loved ones. That’s why they may ask about family members or close friends who could participate in your treatment plan. They’ll help you identify people who’d improve your outcome.
Group Therapy
Many people find tremendous benefit from the ongoing feedback and support a group therapy session provides. Groups are led by behavioral health specialists and provide a safe structure and environment. You’ll have an opportunity to discuss your experiences with a group of your peers and learn strategies to better manage your condition. Convenient day and evening group sessions are available.
Individual Therapy
In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life. Individual psychotherapy explores the thoughts, feelings, behaviors and relationships that led to hospital admission and provides strategies for constructively dealing with them.
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.
Sound Therapy
Sound therapy (aka sound healing or vibrational medicine) uses sonic vibrations to stimulate healing at the cellular level. Vibrations, either from the human voice or resonant objects like tuning forks, gongs, or Tibetan bowls, affect cellular resonance in the body, which can help heal the impact of anxiety, depression, trauma, and more.
Trauma Therapy
Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.
