As a resort-like recovery center that’s deeply connected to the beautiful natural surroundings here, you can also enjoy holistic therapies like equine and mindfulness therapy, acupuncture, massage, sound therapy, and a host of other approaches that allow you to really focus on your emotions and your sense of self as you work towards sustainable sobriety.

Accepted Insurance

Summit Malibu works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober living homes in California offers an intermediate sober environment that has less structure than inpatient rehab but more than typical home environments. This makes it a good option for those who have concerns about transitioning back to the "real world" after treatment. Residents can typically live at the halfway house as long as they want, if they are willing to follow house rules. These may include a curfew, chores, and maintaining a job.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you can receive daily support for 6 to 8 hours which includes evidence-based therapies and medication management. The cost of PHP treatment typically varies but averages 90 days.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
During the first phase of recovery – detox – it is crucial to have 24-hour clinical care in California. This care provides constant monitoring in order to ensure your safely and comfort as you progress through the withdrawal process for drug or alcohol addiction. Licensed professionals prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and provide frequent monitoring to ensure your safely as addictive toxins leave your system.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction.

During group therapy, men and women learn to express their emotions openly in a non judgmental setting. This helps you process your feelings and reduces feelings of social isolation that are often associated with addiction.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

For clients who are struggling with ambivalence toward change, motivational interviewing in California can help strengthen their commitment to change. Using a conversational method, the therapist helps you explore your motivations and empowers you to make the changes you desire.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

The goal of couples therapy in California is to strengthen the couple's relationship. The therapist may take one or more approaches to counseling which may include the Gottman method, emotionally focused therapy, behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic couple's therapy.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Substances can prevent the absorption of nutrients and cause damage to your body's systems. Nutrition therapy in California addresses the deficiencies in vitamins and minerals that are caused by substance abuse.

Recreational therapy is included in alcohol and drug addiction treatment to focus on engaging you in healthy activities that reduce your cravings and improve your overall health and well being. When you participate in group sports, art, or nature walks, you develop new interests and find a meaningful way to spend your time and reduce your cravings.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

The goal of nicotine replacement therapy in California is to mitigate the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. It cuts down on your cravings by supplying a small dose of nicotine without exposing your body to the toxins of cigarette smoke.

Summit Malibu was life changing for me. I left a couple weeks ago and my life truly would not be the same. The staff were all incredible and were not just staff in my eyes. They genuinely cared about me and my wellbeing. They made sure I was ok and gave me advice I will hold onto forever. The director still checks on me to make sure I am doing well. On top of that the house is beautiful and very clean and tidy. The food is amazing with different food for all the meals and they were healthy and balanced as well. The activities were fun and they made a difference in my life as well as the groups. We were brought to the gym every morning which was definitely one of the big parts that kept me sober. On top of that the groups held were so beyond informative and changed my entire perspective on not just my life but life in general. Everyone there cares about you so much and I felt at home even though it was not my home. I hope I never have to go back but if I needed to go back to rehab Summit is the place I would go to 100%. I have already recommended it to several people because I cannot express this enough, truly LIFECHANGING. I loved summit and loved the staff who helped me during this very difficult period of my life. Highly would recommend!!

I wasn’t gonna write a review about Summit Malibu but once I heard about Emily Willis, I thought I’d share my thoughts. I checked in on March 1 about eight days ago and The medical care I received there was horrible at best! I was detoxing off of kratom, which I’m sure a lot of people don’t know what it is, but it is a terrible and hard detox. the 1st 2 days and nights they were giving me Subutex to take for my withdrawals. I am not super familiar with Subutex and didn’t know that you are supposed to put it underneath your tongue and let it dissolve. If you don’t, it doesn’t work. no staff ever instructed me to put it underneath my tongue and let it dissolve, nor did they make sure that I didn’t just spit it back out to take later. I was going through the worst withdrawals ever and was cold sweating for almost 18 hours. The only time they ever checked on me was just to bring me my medication which they again did not instruct me how to take. On my third day there, I had a panic attack because of withdrawals and ended up in the ER, which is where I learned that I was supposed to put the Subutex underneath my tongue. Not from them, but from someone in the ER. When I got out of the ER, I went back to Summit Malibu. They finally gave me my Subutex the right way and gave me my wrong dosage of sleeping pills which I need to sleep. I told them it was wrong and they didn’t care they still wouldn’t give me the right amount After 5 hours of no sleep I went down to see if they could give me my right dose. There were no nurses their so he said he would try to text all the nurses to check but didn’t seem to confident he would get any response and was worried about bothering them. After 3 hours of no response I begged him to please get a hold of anyone and asked him if they have an on call nurse to which he laughed and said technically all of them. I asked him if there was anything else he could do and he literally said call 911. After 2 more hours of no sleep I checked one more time but he still wasn’t able to get a hold of anyone. Even though I was having a hard time walking I had to go down the stairs every time to see him and he never once came up to check on me. I gave up at this point and told him to tell them I was leaving. Mind you this is 45 hours of no sleep and going through withdrawals. At around 7 in the morning they responded that I could have my sleeping pill. A little late at this point. So if they tell you they have an on call nurse at all times it’s not true! In the morning I told them i decided to leave. They did nothing as far as help me to find another place to go or even giving me a ride to go anywhere. They also told me they would let me take my medications and then changed their minds and refused to let me take them. Not the Subutex. I knew they wouldn’t give me that which I’m fine with but my sleeping medication and some for severe phychiatric issues. They basically said FU. They kicked me out on the street with zero help after basically putting me through torture for the previous 3 days. I feel sorry for Emily Willis’s family. If I was a little emotionally less stable then I was. Which obviously wasn’t very stable. I don’t know what would have happened to me. I ended up in a motel on Ventura Blvd cause I didn’t know the area with none of my phychiatric or sleep medicine. Thanks for caring so much Summit Malibu. I made my way in to another program, which isn’t as expensive or luxurious as Summit Malibu but the staff and medical team are trained 100 times better. Please don’t take a chance at this place and I pray for Emily and her family. EDIT I just read a little more about what happened to Emily and saw this happened a year ago. And they still haven’t fixed things. There are other places to go. Don’t take a chance at this place.

I can’t say enough good things about Summit Malibu. From the moment I arrived, I felt genuinely cared for by every member of the staff. Kam, in particular, has one of the biggest, warmest hearts. She is so patient, loving, and truly dedicated to helping others heal. The quality of service here is top-notch, with therapists and facilitators who are seriously vetted and deeply invested in each client’s recovery. I’m forever grateful.

Life-Changing Experience at Summit Malibu Summit Malibu truly saved my life. From the moment I arrived, I was met with compassion, professionalism, and a level of care that exceeded all expectations. The medical and mental health team is second to none—they took the time to understand my needs, provided individualized treatment, and supported me every step of the way. Whether it was therapy, medical care, or holistic treatments, every aspect of my recovery was thoughtfully planned and executed. The accommodations are absolutely beautiful, providing a peaceful and serene environment perfect for healing. Unlike other treatment centers, Summit Malibu feels like a home rather than a facility. The staff treated me like family, offering unwavering support, encouragement, and genuine care that made all the difference in my recovery. Even after leaving, Summit Malibu continues to be a vital part of my life. I’m invited back every month for alumni nights, where I reconnect with others who have walked a similar path. Their commitment to long-term recovery and community is truly remarkable. I can confidently say that I would not be where I am today without Summit Malibu. If you or a loved one is seeking help, this is the place that will not only change your life—but save it.

Horrible what happened to Emily Willis! She should have been taken to a hospital right away. She probably should have been checked into a hospital before even going to Summit. Why didn’t Summit recognize her need for medical care even before allowing her to stay - and especially when she was in dire need of medical care days later? Scary and awful.
