I took unpaid time off to visit facilities in person, and meet with the owners, medical staff, and counselors. I was so disheartened by the status quo, which seemed to be nothing more than overly priced housing with a few AA meetings thrown in, and nefarious billing practices were commonplace at the time. A colleague brought me to Tree House Recovery, telling me it was different. Again I walked into a room of men, waiting for the pitch I’d heard dozens of times. It never came. In that room I found curiosity, knowledge, conviction, community. Vechi gave his pitch, but it was for an entirely different game. I spoke at length with the founder Justin about the neurochemistry of addiction, and the non-medication approaches to healing brains and bodies ravaged by impulsive and compulsive addictive behaviors.
