I attended Oceans in 2020—it was my fourth treatment center, and at 39 years old, I was running out of hope. I had battled an eating disorder and substance abuse for most of my life, having first gone to treatment at just 15. By the time I arrived at Oceans, I was exhausted—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I didn’t just need another program; I needed something that could truly reach me. Oceans was the last stop on the block for me, and I will forever be grateful for my time there. Oceans was different than any place I’d ever been. I spent three months there, and those three months changed everything. Their approach is genuinely holistic—they don’t just treat the symptoms, they treat the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. For the first time, I began to understand the roots of my eating disorder rather than just trying to control the behavior. I learned practical, sustainable ways to cope, to ground myself, and to reconnect with my body in a way that finally felt safe and kind. The staff are exceptional. Many are in recovery themselves, and that creates an environment of authenticity and compassion you simply don’t find everywhere. They meet you where you are—with honesty, warmth, and zero judgment. Because of that, I was able to open up in ways I never had before. Was it difficult? Absolutely. Healing always is. But it was worth every uncomfortable, tearful, and challenging moment. I can never put to words how profound their program is. I’m still in touch with some of the women I met there, and we continue to support one another to this day. The bonds we formed in that space were genuine and lasting—proof of the kind of transformation that happens when people are truly seen and understood. Today, five years later, I’m sober. I’m the same weight I left treatment at, but more importantly, I’m finally at peace in my body and my life. I have the kind of joy and stability I once prayed for. That’s everything to me. If you’re on the fence about Oceans, I can’t say enough. It’s not just a treatment center—it’s where I found my way back to myself. In that space, surrounded by people who genuinely cared and understood, I started to believe in healing again. I learned that recovery isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress, grace, and choosing yourself over and over, even on the hard days. If you’re considering going, take the leap. Oceans is a place where real healing happens, where people remember who they are, and where broken pieces are met with compassion instead of shame. It’s where I learned that recovery isn’t just possible—it’s beautiful.❤️

I came into treatment at the lowest point in my life, and Ocean Recovery truly helped me turn everything around. Through their program, I was able to get healthy again and learn the life skills necessary to live like a successful person. All of the staff were extremely helpful and caring. Bryce and Casey, the support staff, went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable and supported. The overnight staff were incredible during those tough early days when I was struggling the most. The case managers were great at helping me process things and make real progress. Every tech and clinical staff member made sure my needs were met so I could focus on learning and growing. Therapy here was a game changer. The therapy sessions and groups were incredibly helpful, and the outside AA meetings they took us to were inspiring. I even got to see staff members like Reid speak at AA meetings which was awesome. Getting involved in the community was such a big part of my success. We also had amazing outings like bowling, surfing, biking, basketball, and paddle boarding, and being just steps away from the ocean made it even better. I can’t thank Ocean Recovery enough for helping me rebuild my life. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who truly wants to change their life. I also want to add that Danny in admissions helped me every step of the way, he is the reason I came here.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Ocean Recovery offers a residential treatment specifically to meet the unique needs of men. The program include group therapy, eating disorders treatment, nutritional therapy, 12-step program, holistic healing and experiential therapies.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Additionally, Ocean Recovery offer Alumni groups.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

When addicted, quitting your drug of choice suddenly can be dangerous. That's why experts agree a medically assisted detox is the safest way to remove addictive substances from the body. Usually done in an inpatient setting, your vitals signs and overall well being are consistently monitored and rechecked in order to keep you safe and ensure the detox is successful.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

In California, substance abuse treatment programs can help individuals with any type of substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions. These rehab programs typically encompass various levels of care, including medically assisted detox, intensive outpatient, outpatient, residential rehab, and partial hospitalization. You can expect clinicians to utilize evidence-based therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and mindfulness to help you achieve and sustain your recovery. The rehab's clinical team can provide a comprehensive assessment to determine the appropriate level of care and medical support you may need.

Programs

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Program For Women

Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
program-for-men thumbnail image

Program For Men

Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Ocean Recovery - 1115 West Balboa Boulevard knows that as a result of your substance abuse or co-occurring disorder, that one of the areas in your life that likely suffered the most was the relationships with your family and/or loved ones. Through your participation in their family and relationship education group, you will begin exploring new ways of communication that will aid in the reestablishment of past relationships as well as the development of future relationships. They encourage family participation in this group so you can work directly with your loved ones to begin the overall recovery process.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

My experience at Ocean Recovery in California was deeply disappointing and, at times, unsafe. There is a blatant lack of medical oversight — no medical doctors, nurses, or staff with actual medical training on site. The only person with any “medical” background was a psychologist who met with patients only via Zoom. During my stay, there was virtually no education provided on the causes, risks, or science behind eating disorders. Even more concerning, my serious phosphate abnormalities and high risk for refeeding syndrome and cardiac complications received no attention. Their outsourced bi-weekly lab panels didn’t even include phosphate levels — the most critical indicator for refeeding syndrome — despite my clinical risk. Therapeutic care was similarly discouraging. Rather than building patients up, many therapists seemed to tear them down. The living conditions, time outdoors, and activities were not as advertised. The program also imposed unnecessary restrictions on my ability to meet with my AA sponsor or attend AA meetings — the very supports that sustain recovery. The only positive aspect was the strength of the local Newport AA community, which exists outside the program. Unfortunately, I left feeling scarred from my first and only residential treatment experience and without any meaningful education on balanced or well-rounded nutrition.

Before I came to Oceans my life was looking extremely bleak and hopeless. I did not feel there was another way of life left for me to try. Then I made a few phone calls and I spoke to admissions there. They made me feel comfortable about changing my life. This has been one of the most transformative 30 days I’ve ever experienced. I will forever be grateful for the staff, program and a new outlook on my future. Thank you.

When I started at Oceans, I was lost and depleted spiritual, mentally, and emotionally. Oceans gave me a foundation to rebuild my life, learn to trust and create a strong community with sober women, and find out who I am and all the wonderful things that I am truly capable of. I am so grateful for this program and the opportunities that I have had since going there. It’s not always easy but it’s real and these women really want to help you. I have one year sober thanks to this program.

Awesome treatment team! Did so much for me in a time of great need. Very grateful to have stayed at Ocean Recovery for 90 days in May of 2022. They introduced me to the program that has helped me stay sober to this day. The staff (when I was there) was kind and professional. Most were in recovery themselves, worked solid programs, and were happy to share their experience, strength, and hope with me. At the end of the day, if you’re ready to get help, this is solid place to start💯

Response from the owner

I can’t begin to explain how grateful I am for the experience that I had at Ocean Recovery. I have been trying to get sober since February and after three detoxes and another treatment center and completing all these programs , I never had the tools or the clinical support to actually stay sober.. what they have built here changed the trajectory of my life. Everyone from Chas, Matt , Danny, Rachel, and Maddie on the administrative side, supported me every step of the way in terms of supporting my commitment to follow through.. My care team of Chase and Amanda were supportive and also helped me navigate medical issues, doctors appointments and assisting on making the next steps in my sober life. Clinicians like Bruce, Jake and others continuously brought an informative element that really peeled away the layers of why I do what I do. Once I got physically sober, the staff at Ocean Recovery started showing me causes and effects and putting together how I can successfully live sober. The support staff I can’t say enough about. Tyler, Colin, Blake, Reid, Eugene, Kevin, Bryce , all shared generously their experience strength, and hope and made my experience a most positive and effective change of lifestyle. The location of the program also doesn’t hurt. Located just steps from the beach they made sure that we balanced our educational aspects as well as our recreational and physical aspects. They offered Yoga, Breath works and plenty of opportunities for outside events and activities. I am so indebted to Ocean Recovery for this new life that I’m embarking on. At my age, I thought my best years were behind me, but with the support and the direction and the example that I got from the staff and the people at Ocean Recovery I’m excited about my future.
