About Wernle Youth & Family Treatment Center

Located in Richmond, Indiana is the Wernle Youth & Family Treatment Center. This was a treatment center that worked with children who were struggling with their behavioral health and were in need of specialized care that was developmentally appropriate, robust and focused on helping them with essential life skills. Along with mental health support, they offered services if youth had a substance use struggle.

The organization has served individuals throughout the region for over 145 years. Unfortunately, their operations are temporarily suspended as they undergo a period of transition.

When they were providing services to the community, children found supportive residential care in the spacious 100 acre campus. This state of the art campus features a variety of amenities including a basketball court, football field, and comfortable community spaces.

There were also many specialized therapeutic programs including pottery, music therapy, and other creative outlets for children to explore.

Several buildings make up this location including their main residential hall and their new Hawk Center. These buildings offered a welcoming atmosphere and children felt respected and heard as they moved through their treatment program.

Specialized recovery programs were created for children, and there were programs designed specifically for kids who have gone through traumatic experiences including sexual abuse. Trauma informed care guided the evidence based practices, helping children feel supported regardless of their struggles.

Children would have also gotten connected to various churches within the community. Through church programs, you would have been encouraged to focus on this spiritual side of your recovery, while working towards a healthy life.

Despite pausing their operations for now, they’ll continue to serve the community in the near future with more program offerings and specialized care for the wide range of substance use and mental health struggles children and adolescents face today.

in am wondering if anyone has started a blog or a support group for former residents at this facility. i have had no luck in finding any recourses for survivors. I was a resident there and suffered from abuse. I would like if someone could reach out in some way. maybe we could group together and talk about what we can do to possibly sue this place so they will never have the option to harm more children.

Accepted Insurance

Wernle Youth & Family Treatment Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Clinical Services

When you participate in cognitive behavioral therapy in Indiana, you'll learn to recognize distorted thinking that has led to substance use. Your therapist will help you establish new patterns of thinking and healthy ways to cope with challenges that don't involve substance use.

Individual dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) takes place in weekly, 60 minute sessions. You'll have homework to do, such as keeping a diary to track your emotions and actions. You'll also attend group sessions, which are intended to be skills practicing sessions. DBT in Indiana typically lasts six months to a year.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

In couples therapy, you and your partner work with a psychologist to identify challenges in the relationship and what changes need to be made. You'll work on listening, communicating, and navigating those changes in healthy ways.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Everyone knows how difficult and delicate it is to treat a mental health issue, it takes a lot of time and patience and also understanding but when I was treated at Wernle I could easily understood that was not the right place for me.

I would be very happy if I was given the chance to choose again the place where I want to be treated. This place is completely wrong and have no idea of how to treat mental health or substance abuse issues.

i received more trauma than treatment. i do not recommend this facility if you are seeking treatment for mental health. staff are very unprofessional, unethical and unhelpful. although there are very few good staff, the bad outweighs the good by a long shot. one of my teachers i liked, the other one not so much. the staff that i liked, you guys know who you are and i appreciate you, you guys are the only reason that there is a star.

Made out with a staff member in the laundry room, and my roommate got hit on by a staff member and written notes (roommate was not at all interested) The groups were focused on independent living instead of mental health. The program is 9-12 months, and you see the therapist once a week at most. You'd be better off keeping your kid at home or military school. I don't wanna gross people out but I am not the same after living there. I had to go to court with my lawyer and I on one side and the department of child services on the other. I won.

This Place was Horrible caused me a lot of problems within myself that I did not have before I went there mostly emotionally and causing me to be angry again and was so bad caused me to take my anger out in the community. I ran from there and now am facing charges that will keep me locked up for a long time I dont blame Wernle on my actions but the fact how they kept me there after seeing that being there only made me worse emotionally and physically. But there was a couple good things like the staff  Rachel ,and the supervisor Jason. Other than that I would not reccomend this place at for anyone who is seeking help.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Savanna, thank you for affirming some of your experiences while you were at Wernle. We are glad that you were able to connect positively and relationally with some of the staff on your unit. You will remain in our thoughts and prayers for continued healing and success.

High turnover rate in employees. This is one reason that the facility is under staffed. No plan to help the problem.
