About Alexandria VA Health Care System – Fort Polk CBOC

Fort Johnson VA Clinic is located in Leesville, Louisiana. They’re part of the Alexandria VA Health Care System. They’re a community based outpatient clinic offering integrated healthcare including mental health support and substance use treatment. They offer smoke & tobacco cessation programs and specialized care for victims of PTSD.

Veterans Substance Use Treatment in Rural Leesville

Fort Johnson VA Clinic is committed to helping veterans and their families live a healthy life. If you or your dependent is struggling with substance use or co-occurring disorders, they can provide treatment support. They can help with both outpatient and residential care depending on your situation. You’ll first undergo a comprehensive assessment to help the team understand your needs and create a tailored plan for your recovery.

If your assessment indicates a need for high intensity treatment, they’ll refer you to a clinic within the Alexandria VA Health Care System offering residential care. This is typically for veterans with severe substance use issues. Residential care in this system also tackles homelessness, mental health and unemployment via 24/7 therapy and educational classes. For mild to moderate addictive behaviors, this location provides treatment support through both group and individual therapy. The therapy sessions help you address the underlying, emotional, psychological and social issues fueling your substance use.

You’ll learn healthier ways to handle life’s challenges and break the patterns that led you to rely on drugs or alcohol. You’ll be equipped with tools to better process trauma if that’s the trigger. Additionally, you’ll learn life skills like healthy communication, problem solving and building relationships. This encourages a sober lifestyle and relapse prevention. The frequency of the therapy is determined by your tailored care plans.

Opioid Recovery Through Medication Assisted Treatment

If you’re dealing with opioid use issues, your tailored care will involve medication assisted treatment. This technique uses counseling alongside FDA approved meds to deliver holistic recovery. The meds relieve cravings and eliminate painful withdrawal symptoms, while counseling deals with the psychological aspects. This research backed technique is effective at helping patients stop the illicit use of opioids, prevent relapse and ensure sustained abstinence. It’s all about helping you get your life back on track.

This clinic strives to keep costs low across the board. They achieve this by accepting Medicaid, Medicare and Tricare. This makes their healthcare services easily accessible to all veterans. As you move forward in your healing journey, they may link you to VA community resources that support lasting sobriety. This may include affordable housing, job placement and legal services.

Smoking and Tobacco Cessation

Smoking and tobacco cessation is an important and unique service you can receive in this clinic. This addiction can be as bad as drugs and alcohol if left unattended. Research even shows this addiction is linked to depression.

If you’re been unsuccessfully struggling to quit, you don’t have to feel bad about it. Quitting can be challenging because of the emotional connection you build over time with tobacco. Also withdrawal symptoms like irritability and anxiety may occur so seeking help is the right thing to do. Fort Johnson VA Clinic can assist you in your journey to stop smoking or chewing tobacco.

You can also receive daily advice and interactive support through text with their SmokefreeVET program. This comprehensive support can help you stay motivated and build healthier habits for a smoke free future.

Recovery in Rural Leesville

The clinic is situated in a rural setting along University Parkway which is accessible by local roads and offers a central location for regional visitors. Veterans driving from nearby cities like Deridder and Fort Polk can get to the clinic via US Highway 171. Its rural setting means limited public transportation options so it’ll be best to drive or use a taxi/rideshare service. The area boasts some natural attractions that are quite close to the clinic. These include Vernon Lake and Piney Woods Wildlife Management Area.

I have been dealing with this location since August 24 (day I left active service) . The army mad me turn my cpap in prior to my last day -told me I had to draw a new one from the Va . Va wouldn t help me until I got my rating(wasn t told this till after turning it in) . Fast forward 2 months I get my rating . I finally get in to get a appointment to get back all the stuff that got cut off when I left service (cpap , pain management, etc..) , the dr I seen didn t take me serious at all for any of my past medical conditions. Said he put in all my stuff for my cpap, and pain management, medicine etc. . Called a few days later and was told there was nothing on my file from that app , they made me another app to see a nurse because my dr was out (because I threatened to put in an ice complaint when I called to check on my stuff from that app) . That app she put in my stuff, now I have to wait till March to get the consultation for my cpap putting me 7 months without the critical thing that helps me breath and sleep throughout the night (I have severe sleep apnea) I have sleep apnea that was linked to my service (my sleep study at the time was only 3-4 months old which should have been fine for my new cpap) . I ve heard horror stories about the Va , but never thought I would experience it first hand . This place is probably good for the older generation because it seems they are taken more seriously , however for people in there 20 s , seek treatment elsewhere.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

While each drug rehab in Louisiana offers unique elements, recovery support often follows a similar pattern. Detox is followed by inpatient and/or outpatient care, then aftercare support is provided once the participant completes the initial program.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Had to ride my bicycle to my appointment there today. A officer Robinson, badge number 5275 stopped me after I parked my bicycle. I had parked the bicycle off to the left side. The cement area is 10 feet wide I parked my bicycle off to the side so not in the way, this officer had me move My bicycle off the sidewalk and since there is no bicycle parking areas at the clinic. Had to park a bicycle in a car parking space? Sounds insane, but that's the truth. You will see officer Robinson he is the security guard at Fort Johnson VA clinic. If you were not already stressed out before your appointment, dealing with a person such as this guy will really get you stressed. Can't park your bicycle to Fort Johnson VA. The stupid actions of this Robinson rent a cop really stressful.

They never answer the phone. Doctors and therapists quit regularly which makes the veteran suffer, needlessly. Many have transferred their care back to Alexandria va. The worst experience I ever had in years of going to the VA. The Va. needs to reevaluate if this clinic is necessary and track the harm they are doing in neglecting their most simplest of jobs, answering a phone and getting qualified doctors and therapist to stay more than a few days/months. A huge let down and makes receiving care by any veteran worrisome for their healthcare. The lab is the most reliable at this facility and the only bright spot at this VA clinic.
