About Longleaf Hospital

You can find Longleaf Hospital in the Louisiana city of Alexandria. This is a behavioral health facility that treats adults for mental health conditions and substance use disorder(SUD) on an inpatient basis. They offer medication management for clients taking prescription drugs to control withdrawal symptoms and cravings.

Individualized Treatment

You will be given a full assessment when you come in to determine a treatment plan. You will have group and individual therapy sessions and they also offer family sessions as needed.

The treatment program follows a 12-step model focusing on admitting that you are powerless against substances and encouraging you to accept a higher power and make amends. They incorporate principles from Living in Balance which helps you deal with issues in your life that you may have ignored when you were using substances.

Specialized Care for Teens

They have separate inpatient services for teens with SUD. Recovery is often most effective when people are in group therapy with others who are in their own age group and of their own gender.

In addition to therapy, kids will participate in recreational activities twice a day. They may go for hikes, play sports, or have trust games.

If you are looking to make your mental health condition worse than it already is this is the perfect place for you. Upon my departure i was informed that my bag I brought with me was lost. It normally wouldn't be an issue but my carkeys were in the bag. I finally get in contact with someone after 2 days of trying and they informed me that my bag has been found but I'll have to come up with a solution to receive it. I live an hour and a half away and I tried to reiterate to these people that my CARKEYS are in the bag that LONGLEAF lost. I asked if they would like me to walk to get my carkeys because clearly I cannot use my vehicle to come receive the bag that was "lost". The lady of course replied with a condescending attitude "Sir, once again we need you to find a solution to retrieve your bag". Clearly logical thinking is not required to become an employee at Longleaf. Like I said earlier, if you have a mental condition and are looking to worsen it significantly I would recommend you visit for a stay at Longleaf.

My 15 year old daughter is currently here. Getting ahold to her by calling NEVER works, I know that the staff isn't that busy not to answer a phone at all. My daughter said that they held her down numerous times and gave her 4 "calm down" shots all at once(she's 113 lbs.) Their was also a girl there that kept fighting all of the other patients, she was one of the girls that got beat up and a chunk of her hair was pulled out. She said that the staff didn't do anything except watched. She called and asked if I could have her transferred. She called her aunt and her aunt asked to speak with the nurse (Debbie) where Debbie cussed out her out and hung up on her. Her aunt was nice about the question she had but the nurse got rude and hung up. My daughter also said she had to drag her cot in the hallway because sugar ants were crawling around while she was trying to sleep. The visitation room was cold and their were girls in paper gowns with only socks on..in a cold room. Their is also a male(that thinks he's a female) working in the adolescent girls unit. I would not suggest this hospital at all. Very unprofessional, I haven't heard from her doctor at all in the entire 2 weeks she's been there. Their is no area for playing outside at all. It looks like walking through a jail in there. I didn't get to talk to anyone about her conditions before she went into the back. Just the receptionist saying "they will call you". Since then the only time I hear from a nurse is for my ok for them to give her a new medication. Other than that don't even call up there because they won't answer at all. This is Unit A. The nurses also held her down and stripped off her clothing because another girl said she was hiding something, they didn't even find anything on my daughter at all. I wish this place would shut down to prevent more emotional abuse to children. Her aunt asked if they had cameras(that's when the nurse started yelling and cussing and then hung up.) We wanted to see what happened. My daughter has bruises all of her body from this place.

Accepted Insurance

Longleaf Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Clients enrolled in outpatient rehab typically need less intensive supervision and support than those in inpatient care. Clients may continue to work and attend school while participating in addiction counseling and recovery education during the evening, night, or weekend. Clients also often enter intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment immediately upon exiting residential care, which provides them with high-level step-down support as they reintegrate into their homes and communities.

inpatient iconInpatient

Inpatient rehab gives clients a chance to focus on their recovery in a highly structured and supportive environment away from outside distractions, stressors, and addiction triggers. Clients reside at the treatment facility and engage in intensive psychotherapy, which may include individual, group, and family counseling.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient programs are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). The IOP at Longleaf is available for men and women over the age of 18. It is ideal for those who are stepping down from a more acute level of service. They typical duration is of 8-12 weeks.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Clients enrolled in rehab aftercare programs have completed high-level treatment and are typically in the maintenance phase of their recovery, receiving customized services designed to support their sustained sobriety. Case managers and care teams typically begin to plan for the client's rehab aftercare services early in the treatment process to ensure the client's fluid reentry into their home, workplace, and community. These programs evolve as clients' needs change, and frequently include peer coaching, relapse prevention, and career counseling.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don't require 24-hour care. The partial hospitalization program is available for teens and adults in need of mental and behavioral health treatment.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. Detoxification at Longleaf Hospital is designed for men and women over the age of 18.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

Initial phases of rehab treatment often require 24-hour clinical care in Louisiana. This supervised treatment offers three main benefits. Medical staff can provide medications to treat withdrawal. Clients can also benefit from having 24-hour nursing staff available to treat any other physical symptoms. Lastly, this setting ensures that professionals are constantly available to address any emotional or mental health issues related to the addiction or co-occurring disorders.

Treatments

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image

Military Program

Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

When you participate in dialectical behavior therapy, you'll work on recognizing distorted thinking patterns that are guiding your emotions. You'll learn how to change these patterns to eliminate unproductive reactions. This involves developing better coping mechanisms to handle stressful situations.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

If you are struggling with motivation to change, motivational interviewing is designed to help. This method typically involves one or two sessions with a therapist. The technique helps you understand your motivations and empowers you to make changes to reach your goals.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Couples therapy focuses on helping the couple develop skills that will improve the relationship. These include communication, conflict resolution, and anger management. Couples also identify dysfunctional behaviors and work to eliminate them.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

They treat you like it's your fault to be an addict. They should have a little more empathy because the only thing they will achieve is to move people away from their center.

During my stay, I suffered multiple seizures (four in total) which were serious and frightening medical events. Despite my clear and urgent attempts to seek help, describing symptoms including involuntary head movements and loss of bodily control, my seizures were dismissed by medical staff. Instead of receiving appropriate medical attention, I was told that my symptoms were related to “blood pressure issues,” which I know was not accurate based on my experience and history. At one point, I was forced to crawl out of my room and scream for medical help due to the severity of the episode, but was met with harsh and dismissive treatment by the night staff, who ordered me to “get in your bed now” rather than providing the urgent care I needed. My seizures were not properly documented in my medical records, and the neglect and lack of proper monitoring put my health and safety at great risk. I believe this represents a significant failure of care, professional negligence, and a violation of the trust patients place in Longleaf Hospital. This experience has caused me lasting trauma and distress, and I share it now with the hope that the facility will review and improve its protocols for managing patients undergoing detoxification, especially those with complex medical needs.

If you wanna see sunlight or get “fresh air” , you’ll have to go outside with the smokers for one of the 7 daily smoke breaks. A small courtyard with a prison high wall and two patches of turf grass. It was a constant fight to get anything I needed from med nurses but we all cowered in fear of them keeping us there longer than necessary. They do not care about food allergies and I personally witnessed a patient remind again and again to both cafeteria staff and the shift nurses about her allergies and on her last day there watched the cafeteria lady tell her that she never recieved word nor was it on her dietary restrictions paperwork. The beds are so uncomfortable I experienced Sciatica. Some techs and most nurses are great, but just one or two ruin the vibe for the whole shift. The food is terrible and unseasoned which I understand for dietary restrictions but never understood why they would interrupt interns group activities in one day room when we could easily have willing participants in the day room connected to the drs room. Out of fear of not being able to pay my bill with my limited PTO, I had my mother contact my company and had a 15 day time limit to get some paperwork filled out for a work release to be filled out by my psych after I was discharged only my appointment was set for the day before the deadline and it was obviously missed. I was discharged on the 3rd and I still cannot return to work. Even though group is not required they will turn the phones off. The items I would have washed while there almost always came back smellier. There’s two tvs and incomplete puzzles and crayons to mess with if you get bored. I was lucky enough to have family drive me up a paperback book and a unit patient who shared her coloring books and markers. Several patients had little to no spare clothes and the paper scrubs handed out would not hold up and leave some exposed. We would have to beg and plead to use the gymnasium and I missed group . They keep the day rooms extremely cold ( I am always hot) and will not allow blankets in them for reasons . All in all for my first experience I was told it was tame and better than other places but they could definitely improve.

My son has been a patient here at least three times. Never in my life have I experienced such a lack of care or progress in healing They keep the patients long enough to get that little bit of insurance money then kick them to the curb to continue to be addicts AND/OR mentally unstable persons who don’t take their meds. (with no recourse) Trust me when I say- ALL THEY WANT IS THE MONEY and they have zero concern for the actual well being of their patients. I actually had one of the medical professionals hang up on me. What’s even more sad is I don’t know where else to go? There has got to be a better solution. Mental health is real and it matters!!

Keep your loved ones far away from this place. They took someone during a non-psychotic manic episode, pumped her full of STRONG meds, and put her into major psychosis. If you’re a family member and want to know what’s happening with your loved one (say, your wife, or the mother of your child), good luck getting anyone to speak with you. I will say, the nurses and some other staff try to assist as much as they can. But you won’t get anything useful from a Doctor. Other than they’re pumping your loved one full of meds and we’ll see how that goes. But hey, if you have good insurance, they will keep someone in there almost 3 weeks, well past the 15 days.
