About Longleaf Hospital

You can find Longleaf Hospital in the Louisiana city of Alexandria. This is a behavioral health facility that treats adults for mental health conditions and substance use disorder(SUD) on an inpatient basis. They offer medication management for clients taking prescription drugs to control withdrawal symptoms and cravings.

Individualized Treatment

You will be given a full assessment when you come in to determine a treatment plan. You will have group and individual therapy sessions and they also offer family sessions as needed.

The treatment program follows a 12-step model focusing on admitting that you are powerless against substances and encouraging you to accept a higher power and make amends. They incorporate principles from Living in Balance which helps you deal with issues in your life that you may have ignored when you were using substances.

Specialized Care for Teens

They have separate inpatient services for teens with SUD. Recovery is often most effective when people are in group therapy with others who are in their own age group and of their own gender.

In addition to therapy, kids will participate in recreational activities twice a day. They may go for hikes, play sports, or have trust games.

My son has been a patient here at least three times. Never in my life have I experienced such a lack of care or progress in healing They keep the patients long enough to get that little bit of insurance money then kick them to the curb to continue to be addicts AND/OR mentally unstable persons who don t take their meds. (with no recourse) Trust me when I say- ALL THEY WANT IS THE MONEY and they have zero concern for the actual well being of their patients. I actually had one of the medical professionals hang up on me. What s even more sad is I don t know where else to go? There has got to be a better solution. Mental health is real and it matters!!

Keep your loved ones far away from this place. They took someone during a non-psychotic manic episode, pumped her full of STRONG meds, and put her into major psychosis. If you re a family member and want to know what s happening with your loved one (say, your wife, or the mother of your child), good luck getting anyone to speak with you. I will say, the nurses and some other staff try to assist as much as they can. But you won t get anything useful from a Doctor. Other than they re pumping your loved one full of meds and we ll see how that goes. But hey, if you have good insurance, they will keep someone in there almost 3 weeks, well past the 15 days.

UPDATED 2: They followed up with my email and I talked with a patient advocate this morning. I was able to give them some information about the case and hopefully will be able to help.UPDATED: Emailed and awaiting response or would prefer a phone call to the number I left in the email.A family member is there and is about to be released after just 48 hours. They did not talk to any other family members about his mental breaks and bouts of screaming at imaginary people or how he thinks the FBI and CIA are after him. If they do release him after just 48 hours without inquiring about any of his behavior they should be shut down because they are not a real hospital and are not interested in actually treating illnesses in people.Anyone else notice the same responses on review after review. Just cut and pasted as a response. Shows how little they actually care about their patients. They are only in it for the money they get from the people forced there by the courts or police. They don't actually care about helping people get better. Watch I will get the same canned response from this review.

Accepted Insurance

Longleaf Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Clients enrolled in outpatient rehab typically need less intensive supervision and support than those in inpatient care. Clients may continue to work and attend school while participating in addiction counseling and recovery education during the evening, night, or weekend. Clients also often enter intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment immediately upon exiting residential care, which provides them with high-level step-down support as they reintegrate into their homes and communities.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab gives clients a chance to focus on their recovery in a highly structured and supportive environment away from outside distractions, stressors, and addiction triggers. Clients reside at the treatment facility and engage in intensive psychotherapy, which may include individual, group, and family counseling.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient programs are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). The IOP at Longleaf is available for men and women over the age of 18. It is ideal for those who are stepping down from a more acute level of service. They typical duration is of 8-12 weeks.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients enrolled in rehab aftercare programs have completed high-level treatment and are typically in the maintenance phase of their recovery, receiving customized services designed to support their sustained sobriety. Case managers and care teams typically begin to plan for the client's rehab aftercare services early in the treatment process to ensure the client's fluid reentry into their home, workplace, and community. These programs evolve as clients' needs change, and frequently include peer coaching, relapse prevention, and career counseling.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don't require 24-hour care. The partial hospitalization program is available for teens and adults in need of mental and behavioral health treatment.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. Detoxification at Longleaf Hospital is designed for men and women over the age of 18.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
Initial phases of rehab treatment often require 24-hour clinical care in Louisiana. This supervised treatment offers three main benefits. Medical staff can provide medications to treat withdrawal. Clients can also benefit from having 24-hour nursing staff available to treat any other physical symptoms. Lastly, this setting ensures that professionals are constantly available to address any emotional or mental health issues related to the addiction or co-occurring disorders.

Treatments

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

When you participate in dialectical behavior therapy, you'll work on recognizing distorted thinking patterns that are guiding your emotions. You'll learn how to change these patterns to eliminate unproductive reactions. This involves developing better coping mechanisms to handle stressful situations.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

If you are struggling with motivation to change, motivational interviewing is designed to help. This method typically involves one or two sessions with a therapist. The technique helps you understand your motivations and empowers you to make changes to reach your goals.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Couples therapy focuses on helping the couple develop skills that will improve the relationship. These include communication, conflict resolution, and anger management. Couples also identify dysfunctional behaviors and work to eliminate them.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Needed assistance for a close family member this week who was experiencing suicidal thoughts. I was skeptical when reading reviews however once admitted our family had the best experience. So easy to contact and check on our family member and the counselor Jason kept in touch which us and was very helpful. She was released today and only had good things to say about the staff and facility. She even bragged on the food.

This place is the definition of a juvenile detention center. It houses children to teens that have been PEC’d ( short term )for s/h ideations with others that are long term with OJJ and DCFS. This place is not a therapeutic environment At all!! If you’re looking for “SCARED STRAIGHT “ this is the place to be. Key essential staff are Nurse Sam , Nurse Brandy, and SW Tiffany . Oh and the psych doctor will never call the parent or guardian for the record .

I was in Longleaf for a week during August of 2023, and I'm 14. I'll be honest here, Longleaf is way better compared to certain mental hospitals. Either way, it could still improve on a WHOLE lot of things. A lot of the staff at Longleaf are very neglectful (Not all of them but most of them). When I was first admitted into Longleaf, I cried like any other person would. I was away from my family, locked in what I felt like was a prison, and I felt hopeless. I had just gone to my room and cried out while hiding under a blanket. There was a certain lady with red hair who comforted me while I was crying, and I really appreciated that. It goes to show how caring and thoughtful some of the staff can be with patients and their own job. On the OTHER hand, some of the staff can be pretty neglectful and horrible. I had switched the TV onto South Park since nobody else was around besides one other guy and I was getting bored. Apparently South Park is prohibited in the facility (Which I hadn't known of). Due to me turning on South Park, they decided to take the remote to the TV. They took the remote to the TV, and didn't even BOTHER change it off of South Park?? I perfectly understand the reasoning of why they took the remote, but the fact that they didn't change the South Park shows how much they really care. During your stay at Longleaf (Or any hospital for that matter), you'll most likely encounter a few people with mental disabilities that are just generally different from other people. Sometimes those people acted out, and fought with other patients. The staff would break up the fights, but they yelled out slurs (The r-word) at the patients. It was honestly really disgusting to see, and I felt really bad for the kid who was just being mentally battered by the staff. I also don't believe privacy is really too protected, especially among the patients. Now I won't rat out who it was, but one of the patients managed to read all of the information about all of the patients (Every patient is asked a series of questions just to obtain information about them). I had told the person who asked me questions that I was bisexual, and then one morning I heard from him that "someone was gay". It was most likely me he was referring to. I personally think that this was just a flaw among one of the staff members, but I believe privacy SHOULD be respected for every single patient. Another thing, but the hospital doesn't help you WHATSOEVER. The only way they do help you is by prescribing your medicine to take. You don't get any sort of therapy while in the hospital, and most of my days were spent just hanging around doing nothing (They do have activities like P.E, drawing, Bingo, etc... Though they only last one hour per day). I was also supposed to be getting a therapist after my stay at Longleaf, but they never gave me one and completely forgot about me. One last thing, but I believe on my 3rd or 4th night a huge fight broke out. During the fight, some girl tried to kill herself by hanging because she was being sent home the day after. When it was morning, I came to realize that the girl was still being sent home. This honestly disgusted me, especially since the parents are to blame for her suicidal thoughts and she nearly KILLED herself because of them. If you're looking towards putting your child in a mental hospital such as Longleaf, I suggest you look for other options. Giving your child a therapist can really benefit far more than a mental hospital if I'm being honest. Being put into a mental hospital can honestly be really traumatizing for a child depending on what hospital you put them into. Longleaf overall isn't an abusive environment, but it isn't a helpful one either. I was here for a week, and you can trust me on this. :D They don't care, and they won't help you.

I just got out of this place the day before yesterday and it is actually horrible. i’m 16 years old and i was there for attempted suicide. they lied to me multiple times saying that i would be released after my 72 hour hold and i ended up being there for 6 days. not once was there any sort of therapy where i could actually talk to someone and figure out how to help my depression. the only thing they did was prescribe me medicine. the only thing we did all day was sit in the day room. the first day i was there the only thing we did was watch tv and then we got to watch it a little bit after that but they were always lying to us about the remote. one staff told me it was lost then another told me it was broken and then different tech told me that we didn’t even have a remote and that it belonged to one of the other units. so majority of my time there was spent doing absolutely nothing. we did have group and school and times where we would go in the art room or the gym but this was only maybe one or two hours out of the day. the only thing we did in school and the art room was color. and the fights were actually scary. there was one point where me and all the other girls had to go in our rooms because a girl was going crazy in the halls and screaming on the top of her lungs and biting one of the techs. this place isn’t safe at all. coming from a kid who just left here and didn’t get any help at all, don’t. send. your. kid. here.
