About Alta Bates Summit Behavioral Health Outpatient Services

Alta Bates Summit Medical Center’s Herrick Campus provides substance addiction and mental health treatment for individuals in the San Francisco Bay area. They offer inpatient detox and rehab, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient care.

They provide medication assisted treatment to lessen withdrawal symptoms during the detox process. These medications are prescribed by a physician to ensure safety. This service is supportive of your recovery efforts and a solid first step to overcoming addiction.

The inpatient rehab program may take from one to four weeks, depending on your recovery needs and insurance information. You’ll have access to medical care 24/7 and attend chemical dependency counseling to develop a treatment plan customized to your preferences, strengths, and abilities.

They have morning and evening outpatient services that meet in small groups. Their outpatient program is appropriate for those in the early or middle phases of addiction and are motivated to succeed in recovery. You’ll also attend individual counseling sessions that may explore behavior patterns that lead to substance use. Your counselor can help with relapse prevention methods and better future coping skills.

All programs include a thorough medical physical with labs. Clients participate in educational lectures and discussions regarding recovery and addiction, have supervised physical fitness activities, and learn relaxation and stress management methods.

After waiting months for an appointment, I was seen by Robert Neifeld MSPT on March 3, 2025. He immediately started rapidly barking orders at me, rushing me, telling me that things that I was telling him about my condition (I have issues from my shoulder to my back and hip starting from my youth as an athlete and continuing into my adulthood as a musician) were irrelevant and to only tell him about my back, as if I'm a doctor and can distinguish between causes and effects and capable of diagnosis. Believe, if I had that capability, I would have no use for his "help", and it is laughable to use that word. His bedside manner, for lack of a better word, sucks. He was happy to mention all the great musicians he's helped, but anything that I said that wasn't an absolute direct response to his questions was immediately interrupted and met with abrupt and rude correction, reminding me that he only had limited time with me. I truly apologize to Dr Neifeld that my condition that has impacted my music career was such an inconvenience to his already wonderful Monday! It turns out (because he admitted so), that my therapy session was so compressed because he wanted to get out of there early. In the end, Dr Neifeld offered me nothing that I could not have researched myself on the internet, or that I'm not already doing. The one star that I gave is, to say the least, OVERLY GENEROUS!

Left a message due to being on hold for a while, got a call, missed it and now I'm calling back, on hold for 1 hour and 2 mins and counting. This is for the new patient referral line. I don't understand how they can put people on hold for this long.

Does anyone even work here? I've been calling consistently everyday for 5 days in a row, left voicemails, and stayed on the line for more than an hour each day but no one ever picks up the phone to schedule new appointments. I'm being referred for physical therapy for the last trimester of my pregnancy and it looks like I'll deliver my child before anyone ever picks up a phone call here.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in California is a method that therapists often use for the effective treatment of substance use disorders. It is based on the principle that substance abuse stems from unhelpful ways of thinking and patterns of behavior, which can be changed by helping the individual learn better ways of coping.

Recreational therapy is included in alcohol and drug addiction treatment to focus on engaging you in healthy activities that reduce your cravings and improve your overall health and well being. When you participate in group sports, art, or nature walks, you develop new interests and find a meaningful way to spend your time and reduce your cravings.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Yoooo, the rating for this clinic ain't fair. Every employee I've interacted with are nothing but nice, professional, due diligence, and ensure proper care of their clients/patients. As a medical professional myself, it is obvious that everyone involved at this clinic work as a team and communicate as efficiently as possible with the patient load that they must have. From security, to front desk admin, and every single PT. Truly, this clinic feels like fam. I want to give a huge shoutout to Colin, James and Carolyn. They really fast tracked my recovery from a broken wrist + surgery, injured shoulder, tight hip flexors, low back + oblique pain and more from all the riff raff my body has encountered from numerous car/bike accidents, sports injuries and more. It is true...getting scheduled in the beginning was challenging to get a call back and get on the schedule... but once you're in... you're in. Plus they now have a separate phone number / line for scheduling (I think?). From the bottom of my heart, thank you again everyone that has been apart of my healing journey from all the injuries I experienced in such a short amount of time. I mean this in the best way possible... I hope to never have to come here again. 😁😎 But if I am ever injured again for anything... this is a great clinic. 🙌🏼

Telephone never answered. 25 minutes on hold, then returned to voicemail. Left messages, never a call back. Finally went into the facility to schedule appointments. Ridiculous! Front desk person also curt and impatient. She acted like the patients in line were bothering her.

it is quite literally IMPOSSIBLE to make a new appointment. i've called an insane amount of times, starting at 8am on the dot. it immediately goes to voicemail for new patients. i've tried the existing patient line and as soon as they transfer me to new patient, it immediately hangs up. it's like they are immediately declining all new patient appointments, even though i've been calling for months. get referred somewhere else. edit: forgot to add that they will never return your voicemails. i don't understand why it immediately goes to voicemail if they won't answer- put me on hold if you're so busy. i'd rate them less than one star if i could.

So the therapist and employees here are decent except for the management and the receptionist. Apparently their front desk staff is perpetually understaffed and overwhelmed there's one woman a black woman who is really good and is on top of things but the other main woman Resi I think is very unprofessional she neglected to submit my surgeons referral for additional therapy sessions for a month to the point where I had already gone over my approved amount of appointments and when I went to merely move my appointments that I'd already been scheduled around they said that I had too many scheduled and I didn't have authorization for them and that I could get charged for that if I continue to move the appointments that I already had in the books so they had to just cancel them and when I tried to get to the bottom of this with the reception is she graced a voice at me and started being very rude and refused to help me in a room full of other people that were also waiting The manager came down and he defaulted to defending the receptionist without knowing anything for himself for sure so I requested that we go up to his office so that we can look at the computer together so that I can get clarity and confirmation on what's going on and he can tell me the facts instead of speculation. He seemed very resigned to how much of an impedance an inconvenience he has been to me because now where I was originally having occupational therapy sessions every week and I was going to stretch him out to every three weeks I now have to wait a month or more before I can schedule my next session because I have to wait for them to submit My authorization while understaffed. He even said he was going to call me by the following Monday and it's Tuesday and apparently he just forgot or got busy so it shows that not only does the receptionist have no value for professionalism and inconveniencing their clients but the manager also is not motivated or concerned enough with his rapport with their clients or at least he just didn't care about me. Either way I would rather go across the bridge to UCSF then to continue at this office because they are far too unprofessional and neglectful and show little to no remorse.
