About Compass Family and Community Services – Doris Burdman Home

The Doris Burdman Home of Compass Family and Community Services is a nonprofit residential treatment center in Youngstown, Ohio. They are a CARF accredited program that is dedicated to supporting adults with serious and persistent mental health disorders alongside co-occurring substance use issues. Compass has provided a safe, supervised and supportive environment since its founding in 1908. They can help you achieve personal goals like symptom remission, sobriety and independence without requiring inpatient care. They accept Medicaid, state mental health funds and self payment.

Clients have praised the compassionate staff and structured environment. They do have limited capacity at the home.

Dual Diagnosis Residential Treatment

The Doris Burdman Home offers comprehensive residential treatment that features individual psychotherapy and group therapy. They use cognitive behavioral therapy to address conditions like depression, anxiety and PTSD.
Integrated treatment that combines substance abuse counseling, relapse prevention and psychosocial rehabilitation will be used for those with dual diagnoses. You will be able to access services including case management, housing support and family psychoeducation to foster recovery and community reintegration.

What stood out to me is that you will be able to benefit from diet and exercise counseling, supported employment and transportation assistance. The facility partners with addiction service providers to enhance recovery outcomes by focusing on goals like work, education and relationships.

Empowering Individuals

Services are provided to young adults and adults in Mahoning County. The home emphasizes client driven care to empower you to take responsibility for your recovery in a realistic and therapeutic setting.

They don't treat people equally that's for sure. They play favorites. For example I'm sick with a bad cold, which tends to effect my tachycardia more for some reason and I just feel like crap, and they know this but they purposely gave me the hardest chore of sweeping the stairs knowing I have trouble even climbing the stairs, meanwhile a couple other sick residents got told they don't have to do chores today.I get yelled at for not showering after literally just showering really well but others hardly shower at all and get a pass. I got yelled at for accidentally missing one single group the whole time I've been here, but others do it regularly. Miss Melody watches me like a hawk so she can yell if I do anything wrong at all but I mever intentionally do anything wrong and am probably the most respectful, innocent person here no matter how much I hate a few of these workers. If I wasn't court ordered here I wouldn't be here.My mom called with concerns and they cussed me out for telling her anything.

If I could offer zero stars...DO NOT SEND DISABLED PERSONS HERE.I have a step-daughter has been in this facility for almost a year now. NOT COURT ORDERED. They are keeping her from being able to see her 6 year old, who she has custody of. They'll try to keep you as long as they can if you pay rent. They lie and try to manipulate the residents. They will put you on "restrictions" even tho they tell you, you are done with your treatment. They lie and manipulate the residents by means of public humiliation and shaming.

Jamie, we would be open to a discussion regarding your concerns about the Doris Burdman Home, but we cannot discuss specific cases without permission from the client themselves. Please call 330-782-5664 and ask for Danielle if you would like to discuss. As reference, the Doris Burdman Home, established in 1975, is a residential facility that provides a safe, supervised, supportive, but realistic living environment where individuals with serious and persistent mental illness can work towards achieving personal goals. To help facilitate this we partner with other community service providers and stakeholders, including addiction service providers, to afford our clients the best possible chance at remission and recovery. This program is sometimes court-ordered and sometimes voluntary, but it is never punitive. It is designed for single, individuals and not families, however, many clients have families that they stay connected to as they work towards their goals. The facility is supported by the Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board, licensed by OMHAS, and has been CARF accredited at the highest level for decades. Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.
