I went to the emergency room Saturday night April 5th. When I got there I was in tears. I was having a crippling pain in my kidney area. I couldn't even sit down more than a few minutes. They took my information at the desk and I was told to sit down and wait. After a short time I went to the desk in tears asking for a doctor as the pain was unbearable. I was told there were no rooms available to put me in. I went and sat down, crying in agony. A woman walked past me in the hallway wearing a white lab cost. Clearly she worked at Flagler. When she saw me crying, she shouted at me angrily. She said, "Oh Stop!" I went back to the desk to ask how much longer is the wait. The receptionist said that she didn't know. Then she said, "Some of the people back there can't even walk, but you can walk, so I think you will be ok." So she basically dismissed me. As time went on, my pain was horrific. I kept crying and asking for help. A security guard told me that if I didn't be quiet, he was going to make me wait outside. I went back to the woman at the desk. It was 4:00 in the morning. She said that a new shift was coming in at 7:00. I asked if they will take me in and she said, "I dont know." The people who worked in the emergency room showed no emotion, no sympathy or compassion. Some were down right cruel. I finally left untreated. It reminded me of the old movie "The Body Snatchers." The workers that I encountered in the Flagler Hospital emergency room had human bodies, but seemed to be lacking the components that make us human. I never thought I would see such cold hearted behavior in a hospital. It was unbelievable and could be compared to stepping into an episode of the twilight zone, or a plot from any horror movie. It was a chilling experience.

Accepted Insurance

UF Health Flagler Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
A sober living home in Florida often serves as a transitional residence for individuals coming out of inpatient rehab. This helps those in recovery avoid isolation that can sometimes happen after they return home from treatment. It offers a supportive environment where they can practice skills learned in rehab. Offering a combination of structure and freedom, men's or women's sober living is a good stepping stone to independent life in recovery.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Often referred to as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers an intensive treatment option that allows individuals to return home at night. PHP treatment typically requires a minimum of 20 hours a week for an average of 90 days. Participants attend daily therapeutic sessions, receive medication management, and have access to skilled medical professionals. While costs can vary, most insurance will fully or partially cover a partial hospitalization program.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Recreational therapy helps you recover from addiction by giving you structured activities that promote your physical health and mental well being. These activities could range from sports and fitness to creative arts and provide a constructive outlet for your emotions and stress.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Emergency Room Visit June1,2025 11 pm I was in extreme pain so my husband insisted on taking me to the ER. They had patients ahead of me but seeing how much pain I was in they did get me to a bed as soon as possible. Everyone was kind and helpful- I did’t get everyone’s name but everyone I came in contact with was caring and compassionate. Dr. Mauzy and Nurse Lauren were some of my caregivers. I thank them and the young lady who assisted (as well as everyone else) profusely.

I have stayed at Flagler hospital so many times and they have saved me so many times. I have watched Flagler become UF Health Flagler and it has become an even better hospital than before. The new Epic My Chart system is amazing because now all of our doctors can access our chart when needed. The staff is so amazing. I love them all so much. From PCTs and Food and Nutrition to Doctors and Nurses and cleaning staff, they are all so sweet and kind. I have made so many wonderful friends. I am chronically ill and I stay here probably every couple of months so I feel like I am the person to review this hospital honestly. I want to say Thank you to UF Flagler for saving me this week and for all the other times you have saved me. I am so grateful to have you.

This place is a joke! Needed a test told to be here at 7:30 am for an 8 am appointment. At 8:05 finally called into registration. New person behind the desk is being guided by a supervisor who took her shoes off while we were in there! Finally get upstairs and we are greeted by people who have no idea what they are dying. Been here for 1 hour and 20 minutes and still have not even started the test. I asked the person behind the desk as to an ETA and I get "I don't know" and he goes back to looking at his phone. This is ridiculous and I will avoid this place from here on out!

I have always given Flagler Hospital excellent reviews. BUT WHOEVER is doing their scheduling has DROPPED the ball hard! When your doctor orders a test that is on crucial side UofF Flagler is NOT the place! I thought the hospital would elavate a step higher, but this is UNREAL! So is there no CS department to improve this? I worked there several years and I was a BIG FLAGLER FAN! This is so SAD‼️

As someone who had to visit out of state I was so nervous to go b/c of the bad reviews. But let me say I was so happy I went. I was in and out, but didn’t feel rushed out. I was treated with care and respect. I felt the nurse and the doctor were very thorough. Cannot speak highly enough of the PCAs as well. The hospital was extremely clean. I’ve had some horrible hospital experiences where I live and I was very impressed with the care I received here.

I would never go to this ER again. We sat for over 3 hours in the waiting room watching people come in after and be seen before me. No one came through the waiting room to check on any of the waiting patients. Level of care is low.

ER visit, amazing service! Minor outpatient surgery, once again amazing service. I was call back to the pre-op room in less than five minutes, Andrea was my preop nurse, amazing, 15 minutes later I was in the operating room, Dr Rosenbaum and staff,, amazing, no anesthesia because I don’t have friends to drive me home, 45 minutes later I was walking out of the hospital, did I say Andrea was amazing? 15 minutes later I was at Harry’s downtown, enjoying blackened redfish with crabcake and Nola rice!!

My mom broke her hip on 13 April. She was brought to Flagler ER. I arrived at the ER 15 minutes after my mom to come into the room to my mom screaming in pain. They had given her morphine, which did not help the pain at all and was treated like a druggie. Nobody would help my mom. They listened to her scream and one nurse even had the audacity to tell my mom just scream scream all you want we’re not giving you any more medicine. When I asked the nurse how they were going to control the pain they said they had to wait 45 minutes to administer more pain medication and I said absolutely not get the doctor, get the nurse, get the hospital advocate in here. I want help. They finally gave my mom medication to help her pain Which in my eyes was absolutely too late. Doctors are supposed to have compassion for people not treat everybody like a drug addict. I heard horror stories about Flagler Hospital when I moved here and now that I’ve dealt with it, I can see why people say this is the worst hospital in St. John’s County. Don’t ever go here if your loved one is hurt. Go to Baptist, go anywhere besides Flagler hospital!
