Lyrica or pregabalin is a medication that is classified as an anticonvulsant. While used to treat partial onset seizures or epilepsy, it has also been FDA approved to treat neuropathic pain caused by damaged nerves, diabetes, shingles and fibromyalgia.
It works by slowing down impulses in the brain that can cause seizures and decreases the release of certain brain chemicals that send pain signals to the brain via the nervous system.
Although Lyrica has become a commonly prescribed medication for pain, it is not an opioid.
Lyrica crosses the blood brain barrier, attaching to presynaptic voltage-gated calcium channels and decreasing certain neurotransmitters in the brain that help to block pain signals, whereas opioid drugs bind to opioid receptors, reducing the transmission of pain signals and altering the perception of pain.

What is Lyrica Used For?
Lyrica is FDA approved in the United States to treat pain associated with damaged nerves, diabetes, shingles and fibromyalgia.
It binds to areas of the central nervous system to decrease nerve impulses and decreases the release of certain neurotransmitters in the brain. It is also used, along with other medications, to treat epilepsy and partial onset seizures by slowing down impulses in the brain that cause seizures.
In addition to the FDA-approved conditions, Lyrica is also being used “off label” to treat other conditions. The term off label means that the drug is being used to treat conditions other than the ones it was originally designed for.
These off label conditions include generalized and social anxiety disorder, insomnia, chronic pain conditions, uremic pruritus, chronic cough, complex regional pain syndrome, trigeminal neuralgia and to prevent migraine headaches.
Lyrica is considered a first-line drug in the treatment of neuropathic pain, often in conjunction with other drugs such as gabapentin. For individuals who use it off label, it is generally prescribed after first-line drugs have been tried without success.
Lyrica vs. Gabapentin
While both Lyrica and gabapentin are considered gabapentinoids and are often used to treat the same conditions and have similar side effects, there are distinct differences between the two drugs. Lyrica is considered a controlled medication on the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Schedule of medications and illicit substances.
Gabapentin has not been placed on the federal Schedule of drugs; however, some states voluntarily consider it a Schedule 5 drug and require prescribers to follow monitoring and guidelines for use when it is prescribed.
Lyrica is absorbed more quickly than gabapentin, and regardless of the dose, the amount of drug remains bioavailable and stable in the body. The half life of gabapentin is between five and seven hours, whereas the half life of Lyrica is 6.3 hours.
Half life refers to the amount of time it takes for the plasma concentration of the drug to be reduced by 50% of its original value. Lyrica, therefore, remains in the body for about 35 hours, although its effect will wear off before that time. Gabapentin, however, takes 48 hours to clear the body and may need one to two weeks to reach the desired effects.
Both medications are highly effective in treating pain and preventing seizure activity. It is critical to remember that both have a potential for abuse and dependence and should be used with caution.
Is Lyrica Addictive or a Controlled Substance?
Lyrica is considered a controlled medication on the DEA Schedule of medications and illicit substances. It has been rated a Schedule 5 drug, which means it is a controlled substance with a low potential for abuse and has an accepted medical use in the U.S.
When compared to opioid drugs such as morphine or hydrocodone, which are considered Schedule 2 drugs, the potential for addiction is much lower with Lyrica.
For some people, the use of Lyrica induces a state similar to being drunk; others describe a feeling of euphoria when taking it, all of which can contribute to the potential for abuse and dependence. The risk is significantly higher when an individual has a prior history of addiction, especially opioid addiction.
Lyrica Side Effects and Withdrawal Symptoms
Lyrica has been shown to decrease pain and prevent seizures; however, its use is not without side effects.
The most common pregabalin side effects include:
- Dizziness
- Chills
- Fast heart beat
- Nausea
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Diarrhea
- Red, irritated eyes
- Weight gain
Serious side effects of pregabalin use include:
- Allergic reactions or angioedema
- Skin rash; itching; hives; swelling of face, eyes, lips, tongue, arms or legs; trouble swallowing or breathing
- Vision problems
- Blue-colored skin, lips, fingers and toes
- Skin sores
- Easy bruising or unusual bleeding
- Feelings of depression or suicidal thoughts
- Breathing problems
- Confusion, extreme drowsiness or weakness
- Unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially when combined with feeling unwell or with a fever.
Individuals who have developed a psychological and/or physical dependence to Lyrica may start to exhibit Lyrica withdrawal symptoms as soon as 24 hours after the last dose. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and can last for one to two days.
A person may have residual Lyrica withdrawal symptoms for several weeks. The severity of withdrawal symptoms may increase with higher doses of the drug and increase when taken for longer periods.
Symptoms of pregabalin withdrawal include:
- Headaches
- Mood changes
- Agitation
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Confusion
- Suicidal thoughts
- Nausea
- Sweating
- Diarrhea
- Increased heart rate
- Cravings for the medication
- Insomnia
- Seizures
- Excessive sweating
- Flu-like symptoms such as feeling ill, muscle pain and fatigue
Abruptly stopping Lyrica is not recommended and can have serious consequences if not tapered over an extended period. Doses should not be adjusted without medical supervision.
Lyrica in Addiction Treatment: Risks and Benefits
The use of Lyrica in people with active addiction or a history of addiction should occur with extreme caution due to the risk of developing an addiction to the drug.
However, there are some arguments for its use in reducing withdrawal symptoms associated with benzodiazepine and opioid dependence. As well, the use of Lyrica has been shown to decrease pain associated with fibromyalgia and neuropathic pain, preventing the use of other highly addictive medications.
Arguments against the use of Lyrica in individuals who abuse other substances, especially opioids, are based on the potential for exacerbated withdrawal symptoms. This could lead to continued use to avoid the discomfort associated with discontinuing the drugs. There is also an increased risk of overdose when combined with other substances.
Overdose on Lyrica is rare, but it can happen, resulting in reduced consciousness, confusion, agitation, depression, anxiety and restlessness. When pregabalin is used with other central nervous system depressants, the result could include heart block, seizures and death.
One study published in Addiction, a peer reviewed journal of the Society For The Study of Addiction, found that when Lyrica is combined with opioid drugs such as heroin, it potentially increases the risk of acute overdose death.
The bottom line: Lyrica offers many therapeutic benefits, especially in chronic neuropathic pain or in preventing seizure activity. However, it should be used with caution due to the risk of addiction and overdose potential when combined with other drugs such as opioids and benzodiazepines.

My partner spent 9 weeks here last fall. Having tried other inpatient and outpatient programs, I can say that Soberman’s truly helped him discover what life was worth living for. The staff and the care they provide are top-notch. I think this place truly saved his life. From a family perspective, I really appreciated how they included me and others in his family in his care. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and cared for. Having a private room was a huge plus it gave me the personal space I needed to focus on my recovery while still managing my work and school. The fact that I could use my phone and laptop was incredibly helpful, allowing me to stay connected and on top of everything while receiving the care I needed.The staff were incredible not only professional but genuinely caring. They treated me like a friend, making the whole experience feel much more comfortable. The facility itself is very comfy. Hello im Ashley and im an addict. My whole life has been filled with chaos and trauma. Some from my own doing and some that wasnt my fault. There is not a single bad word i can say abouy my experience at Beachway Therapy Center. My time there was cut short thanks to my own self-sabotaging behavior. Even then Beachway still treated me with compassion and the desire to help me. My situation was a unusual one. I came into the trauma program with a clean date of April 16th 2014. So at 11 years clean i was dealing with bipolar disorder, intense anxiety, a very unhealthy toxic relationship and an intense desire to break generational curses for my children. My history is one that involves homelessness, street drugs and a street mentality. Beachway took on the challenge of helping me work thru that trauma. I opened up to the program and other woman like never before. I had an amazing counselor, amazing case manager, and amazing staff that were there anytime i had moments of high anxiety or worry. I am so disappointed i ruined my chances of having a chance at going thru a trauma program with Beachway. Just in the short time i was there i did gain a small sense of self back. If you were like me and worry about making friends with the other clients because they wont understand you or like you, that is not even close to true. I found a sense of community that i couldnt find anywhere else in my life. If i manage to find a magic lamp, one of my wishes would definitely be used on looking young forever after that id wish to feel the peace and serenity i felt at Beachway. Thanks to them i had just enough courage to get me and my kids out of my bad situation. Now my goal is to continue with trauma therapy. Do not be me and let your past dictate your future. No matter how clean you are from drugs that trauma will creep up on you and when it does use tools like Beachway to seek help instead of the alternative, and please for the love of your higher power get out of your own way and accept their help before you get kicked out like i did. My experience at Banyan was very good. The staff was very helpful, the therapy was extremely beneficial , and the food was great! Like with all rehabs, it is what you make of it. If you go there thinking everything is perfect, you’ll be disappointed, it’s not. If you go for simply a social experience, it’s not a resort. If you go because you’re serious about your recovery, it’s a great place to take the first step !

Loved Beachway. I was extremely anxious with everyday panic attacks, and the medicine was no longer working. At Beachway I found a way to control my attacks and anxiety. It is not easy and sometimes I felt like it wasn’t going to work.
We worked through my childhood traumas and I learned techniques on how to defuse my anxiety.

Where do I begin Before I came to Elevate I thought I had reached rock bottom in life but shortly after coming here I realized they saved me from ever getting there. I came for an alcohol addiction which became a secondary objective to my stay. I learned to love myself and gained confidence in being me. I found a way to finally be happy in life, in the current moment without contingencies. To know I was never broken and that I have more control over my perspective than I ever thought was possible. My sobriety came as a byproduct of discovering my own self worth and I often lay awake at night filled with gratitude for having the opportunity to go through this program. The amount of understanding and support offered to me was outstanding and I felt as if I was amongst family. The care and love from the staff inspires the clients to care for each other in the same fashion. If at any point you need a shoulder to lean on or just someone to listen, every face you see is there for you. I can t find the words to formulate a sentence that will truly express my thanks and love for Elevate. All I can do is let others know if your suffering and need the help, this is where you will find it.

I am a born pessimist, so I spent a great deal of time looking into this place. First, I found nothing negative whatsoever, Secondly, I spent 60 days here and cried leaving. This place and ALL of it’s staff saved my life. I can remember spending countless times in the nurses station, at the wellness advocates desk, and even in the Blanco hall, talking to the different staff about my days, my problems, my achievements, etc. And EVERY SINGLE PERSON TOOK THE TIME TO LISTEN AND HELP OR CHEER ME ON!! There’s not a staff member in this place that doesn’t care about each person. The therapy sessions are incredible and I can’t thank them enough for showing me I wasn’t hopeless and giving me all the tools I need to have a beautiful, healthy and sober life. Windmill Wellness Ranch has truly changed my life in ways I never expected. I ve been to multiple treatment facilities over the last decade and felt that I was mentally, physically and spiritually hopeless. I felt I was a lost cause. I have had experience with 12 step programs before and assumed this experience would be like the others. I was wrong. Windmill Wellness Ranch and the staff they employ offer so much more than just a place to get sober and try twelve steps. From the admissions personnel to the wellness advocates, the therapists and the recovery coaches, I ve never met a team of people so willing to bend over backwards to help me reach my personal goals. Through WWR I was able to process a great deal of trauma successfully, while at the same time gain some phenomenal insight on how to grow in a life centered around permanent sobriety. The employees genuinely care about people and most are in recovery themselves. I m writing this as a parent. After researching several residential facilities it became apparent Peaks in Colorado Springs stood out from the others. We were specifically looking for mental health treatment. From start to finish at their facility there was always involvement in what was going on, (with my adult daughter s permission of course). Having caring and knowledgeable people to help through an incredibly hard time was needed and so appreciated. Through different stages of her care there was visitation, phone calls and weekly Zoom type meetings where families of clients could talk together with a therapist about highs, lows or concerns. The hardest thing to do was feeling like you are handing over your loved one at such a vulnerable time and not knowing what s going on. Peaks has so much compassion in knowing that. IT’S A YES. JUST GO.Unfortunately, an issue at home meant my stay ended early – there was a tragic miscommunication amongst staff the day before as well, which they handled with the utmost integrity. It was certainly the only snafu in my experience, and it rightfully belongs in the “sh*t happens” category. Staff had the humility and courage to own the mistake, and that willingness alone was enough to know that I had come to a place full of people who are truly the real deal when it comes to mental health.I left because I had to – not because I wanted to. In fact, I was planning on extending 30 days to complete their PHP, but life called me back home.Make no mistake – were it not for having to leave to handle something horrific back home (I’m from the other side of the country), I would still be there. I woke up this morning aching to go back to the safety, the compassion, the grace, and the mercy of Peaks. The staff are beyond wonderful. They sat with me through the darkest day of my life, and did nothing but love me. I can’t describe how supported I felt. I could literally *feel* the empathy of the clinicians, nurses, and medical providers who sat with me and held space through the worst two panic attacks I’ve ever had.My housemates and I, and especially my roommate, wove a web of support and belonging I had never experienced. (Prior to admission, I literally could not get out of bed or do anything remotely social – I was even finding it hard to leave the house). I had the BEST time being part of a community, which gave me new confidence, and reassurance that I could get back into the game of life.I’m a therapist myself and I would 100% recommend Peaks as a committed, compassionate, caring healing space of the very highest quality. These people have their sh*t together.I have never encountered a place full of people who truly WANT to be there for you. Imagine being asked multiple times per day by staff if there is anything you need to feel supported. Being surrounded by people who know and care whether you’ve eaten that day, how you slept last night, and whether you need anything else to feel safe was pretty mind-boggling.I would trust Peaks to treat my nearest and dearest with zero hesitation. It will be the only mental health treatment center to which I refer my clients. Thank God for Peaks.Certainly I will forget to name some of the incredible staff, but Faith, Kinnley, Clint, Kara, Holly, Angela, Dr. Nichols, Sasha, JUDY, Cindy, Kyle, Pema, Julia, Chef, Taylor, Tara, Logan (x2), Heather, Eric, Marissa, the various therapists who led group, Bobby, Max in admissions, and Rachel – thank you for giving me a home, and at long last, an accurate mirror. Thank you also for tolerating my dirty blue hair and my massive disco fruit snuggie. I miss everyone already.Although I only got to stay for 10(ish) of the 30 days I had planned, the changes in me are real. I came into Peaks as a 47 year-old adult child, and left as a grown-up.Thank you, Peaks, for turning me back into me. Thank you for restoring my dignity. I will carry a piece of you in my heart always with immense gratitude. There is something spiritual in the particles and energy at this place that truly brought me back to life.

As someone in a grey area, i had more clear thoughts than people i was in with. Many things I heard from people who still needed to allow their brain to heal is “they just want our money” yet they are one of the few places that actually help people who can’t afford the treatment. And their staff is empathetic and know what you are going through. Trust them they are good people and their system works.I was reluctant at first over the 12 steps. I’m not an addict, i have substance abuse occasionally throughout my life but I’m not disordered that way. But my mental health has been unmanageable so I sought treatment. But im in a gray area stuck in PA due to insurance.Theres not many places for that kind of treatment. Still they again went above and beyond to help.I had to stay more days than I wanted for the result i needed. I had to let them do their jobs, and I did even though I thought I knew the result, which was I’m my opinion ‘hopeless’But the last day I gave them, they found somewhere. And ironically even though I found a place specifically for mental health, I still have to take those 12 steps for the housing. Not for the program if signed up for. For the housing since the program has third party housing where its required.Thats when I realized what they kept saying was true. ‘we wish people who weren’t addicts took those steps’ Everyone can benefit from them, even if that higher powers a door knob. Its is blessed by God to help the sick and suffering. Theyre beautiful steps. Which i realized in there, but i didn’t think theyd applied to me.I had thought I already took them. I know my resentments and I know where I’m at fault. I have a higher power and I know I’m powerless, but in all reality I never took those first 3 steps properly. And my resentments and faults go deeper than the cycle of anxiety allows me to see.I needed that introduction to it to see that. Immediately coming back to triggers I realized so much due to the information i was given within those walls. Again these are blessed people. You might wanna run when you get in, you might not understand the process, but trust me, and trust the process.You will be baffled by the results if you just do what they say and take those 12 steps. There you should master the first 3, and you’ll be introduced to the rest to properly pick out a good sponsor when you get to the next place. You need someone who will throughly go over the rest with you and they train you to seek that if you listen.Do it so you can be baffled by the results and live a good life.

Where to being. Treehouse is the very first place that comes to mind when I think about where I would send a loved one struggling. I went through PDX and it absolutely gave me a foundation to actually build a life. The program design, team, staff, culture allowed me to get to a place of healing that had eluded me for years. I ve been to 15-20 rehabs in my journey. Detoxes, inpatient , outpatient, Salvation Army, the million dollar mansions in SoCal, and every SUD/ PTSD program the VA has- but none of them got CLOSE to getting me to the place that treehouse has. Gallus Medical is a really great detox facility, from the beginning, the staff was very welcoming and professional.One nurse, Ingrid, truly stood out. She went above and beyond in every aspect of my care, and I cannot thank her enough. The care I received under her watch was phenomenal, and she truly enhanced Gallus Medical’s reputation. While all staff members were kind and helpful, it was Ingrid’s support that really made a difference.The facility itself is comfortable. Each patient gets a private room with a large bed and TV, and you can keep your electronics and wear your own clothes. There is a balcony for smoking you can use whenever.The detox process for Fentanyl was the best I ve ever gone through. Gallus uses a micro induction method, combining small amounts of subutex with opiates, which gradually lowers the opiates while increasing the subutex.I live about an hour away from the facility, so I was essentially told to figure aftercare out on my own once I left. After paying a substantial amount for the program, I truly believe this is an area where Gallus dropped the ball, especially considering their emphasis on aftercare during the intake process. But I guess that is because this is strictly a detox facility, once the drugs are out of your system your on your own. I called 10 days after leaving asking for help however I was more or less on my own, not something most detox facilities do, aftercare is usually super important.So 4 stars if we include aftercare however 5 stars for the facility, staff, and detox protocol.

This is by far the greatest experience I’ve ever had. The staff is beyond helpful respectful kind they are very attentive your every need if you go to treatment for any reason you need to come to gallus detox I give this place an A+

I had a phenomenal experience at this facility! Every staff member, from the RNs to the doctors, was incredible and made my time here enjoyable and relaxing.I want to give a special shoutout to Ingrid she’s a gem! Her genuine care for people is evident in her warm demeanor. Dr. S is also exceptional; he is thorough, caring, and incredibly intelligent. It s refreshing to find a doctor who combines both kindness and expertise.Niz is passionate and wonderful, always keeping me on track. The support from Jada, Jayden, Clinton, Victoria, and Steph was amazing. Courtney, in particular, is my hero! Thank you all so much for everything you ve done for me.God bless you all,Lauren—

I couldn’t recommend this place enough. All staff are exceptional and care genuinely about your well-being. The facilities are clean and comfortable. The nursing staff are attentive. God forbid I ever need a medical detox again, this is the only place I’d want to go. And I don’t say this lightly: they’ve truly saved my life.P.S. The food is amazing.
