10.5 hours in the waiting room with abnormal EKG. This is the entirety of information I got in that span of time in regards to the electrocardiography findings. To say it was disappointing would be an understatement. I tried very hard to be extremely patient as I realize that if it were catastrophic, they likely would have brought me right back. Unfortunately, after 10.5 hours I told them that I had to leave. I asked if they could just tell me what the abnormality was on the EKG and they said only a doctor could Provide that information (which i truly so understand)so I would have to continue waiting Buttttttt my blood work looked good. I Reluctantly went home, wondering if I was a ticking time bomb. I know some of the most incredible nurses and doctors that work in that ER, but unfortunately, the Waiting room needs some serious serious work in keeping patients feeling safe and comfortable. The woman I was seated with in the waiting area, had a broken femur and waited there 6 1/2 hours before she was seen, given any kind of medication, x-rays, or a bedpan to use the bathroom. Again, I am sure they work very hard to provide top-tier care once behind the door but unfortunately, with the combination of so many local hospitals, closing and mental health facilities closing These poor people are bombarded with work beyond capacity. A man struggling with mental health issues stared me down and followed me around the waiting area every time I moved because I was uncomfortable he then Proceeded to tell everybody about how he was murdered before and he found the secret to feeling better and its enemas. Yeah so we can do better. Just communication alone works wonders. Half the people in there just need a hug or a quick triage to tell them they re OK and they ll be out Of the way, including myself.

Went in for an MRI. Staff were friendly, kind, clear. I appreciated that Jacob squished the earplugs down before handing them to me, was a nice touch. Staff were kind to my mother while I waited, she raved about them.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Addiction is a highly complex problem, and drug rehab in Massachusetts is often necessary to address it. These programs treat physical, mental, and relational issues that are involved. Treatment empowers individuals to manage these issues without the use of drugs.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Animal therapy (aka pet therapy or animal-assisted therapy) can be very healing, as it allows patients to bond with animals, who give unconditional love. This is particularly useful for those who suffered trauma by the hands of people, who may be able to trust and form closer attachments to animals than humans at certain stages of rehabilitation.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Four principles are key to motivational interviewing in Massachusetts. First, the therapist offers empathy for the client's feelings and experiences. Second, they encourage the client to believe in themselves and their ability to change. Third, the therapist refrains from imposing their own viewpoints. Lastly, the therapist helps the client identify discrepancies in their circumstances and future goals.

During cognitive behavioral therapy in Massachusetts, clients work with a trained counselor to identify negative thinking patterns and change them. This change in thinking has been shown to lead to changes in behavior to treat substance use and mental health disorders effectively.

Fell down earlier today. Waited 3 hours before I met my nurse. Blew 2 lines putting in IV. Still haven't seen a doctor. We have a break going on for 3 hours. Had 2 Surgeries in this Hospital but your emergency room needs work. Very angry right now, want to leave.

Been here several times and the experiences keep getting worse, the staff that greets you are extremely rude and unprofessional, I'm currently in the waiting room with a pick line sticking out of my arm waiting to be treated, I would recommend driving a little further to be treated!

Go to any other hospital. We've had to go here on more than one occasion. We wait. People come. Get seen. Leave. And we watch it while we wait. When we ask about it we're met with, "you'll be seen when you're seen." Yeah...you don't say... This is the most useless hospital I have ever seen. Again. Go anywhere else.

The workers here are EXTREMELY rude and unprofessional. Hospitals are supposed to help you, not treat you bad. It doesn’t matter if they’re having a bad day or not, they should NEVER raise their voices at a patient. Wait time for the emergency room is very long, which I understand, but the fact that some patients are ignored instead of being reassured is not only rude, but also unsafe. One of the workers here cussed at a patient when all the patient did was express concerns about their health. After reading other reviews, I think something needs to be done to improve the environment and safety for all patients.

Grateful for the care bring provided to my grandmother and in general, the majority of hospital staff interacted with were wonderful. Others who were less friendly were likely stressed. The food provided was horrible though and I'm utterly confused why a place regarded for health and recovery would feed people so poorly. That's a more general view of hospitals.

I’d give minus ten if I could. The “doctor” who triaged me didn’t know anything about my injury, (grade 2 rips throughout my back) and said I should be healed already (took 8 more months), so I sat for 12 hours in pain after other worthless visits. They gave me pain pills. Heavy hallucinations started after a few weeks and it wrecked my liver. This place is pathetic and that fake doctor is a joke.

On March Saturday, March 8, 2025 I endured the worst eight hours of my life only to have it enhanced By the fact that my extremely sentimental $700 necklace was either stolen or lost. I was supposed to have surgery on the following Monday. I had gotten a concussion a few weeks prior and they wanted to do a second CAT scan to make sure there was no bleeding on the brain before my surgery. They did it at Mass General outpatient in Danvers. They sent me home directly after the Cat Scan, as they weren’t expecting any problems. The minute I walked into my door the phone rang. It was the doctor from Mass General Danvers. He regretted to inform me that they had found some gray and white matter in the right temporal lobe of my brain. This completely rattled me in my family. They suggested that I go to the emergency room immediately for further testing normally, if I have to visit the hospital. I remove all of my jewelry before hand where I was in such a rush. I did not do so well in the emergency room a nurse offered to take off all of my jewelry and put it into a plastic Ziploc bag for me to take home. I waited another five hours before they did an MRI only to tell me that the CAT scan had made a mistake and there was no problem with my brain. Although It was an amazing relief. The termoil they put me through during those hours was nothing short of terrifying. They discharged me at midnight that night. Two days later I was having my surgery so I never took my jewelry out of the bag. It was not until later that week that I did so and was stunned to find out that my necklace was missing. I immediately called Salem Hospital emergency to see about a lost and found, and they told me that it was not there. They told me I could follow up with patient and family relations which I’ve been doing for the last month with absolutely no progress most of the time I leave a message and receive no call back when I did receive a couple of calls. They were going to check with other people and get back to me which they never did. As I said, it was already a horrible Experience and their disregarded to the situation has arranged me. I tried reaching out to the CEO of the hospital to no avail. I actually went to the Salem police station yesterday to ask about filing a police report. They said that Salem Hospital Had their own security police that could handle this for me. I went to the hospital, spoke to a security officer who said that I would have to speak to family, and patient relations. So I asked where the department was. It was in a different building so I walked over to the building and it was locked tight. I called from the parking lot. Got a voicemail For the 20th time at least. I’m at a loss right now to what my next step is. I’m not going to give up. I plan to keep trying to find a way to either get compensated for the necklace or have them find it which at this point I don’t think we will happen. I’m enclosing a picture and price of the necklace which was given to me by two very important children in my life. I wore it every day
