About Sinai Hospital of Baltimore – Department of Psychiatry

The Sinai Hospital of Baltimore’s Department of Psychiatry offers opiate addiction recovery services on its campus in Baltimore, Maryland. As part of the larger Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, it’s well staffed and connected to other medical services. Treatment takes place in a private, clinical setting with state of the art amenities.

The Department of Psychiatry treats individuals with addiction on an outpatient basis only. However, clients experiencing severe mental health issues may be referred to their inpatient psychiatry program.

Dubbed SHARP (Sinai Hospital Addiction Recovery Program), the outpatient program combines drug assisted treatment with other evidence backed approaches, such as therapy. Clients who receive methadone and buprenorphine will be closely monitored throughout treatment to avoid complications. The hospital’s licensed staff administers all drugs.

The inclusion of therapy is vital to the program’s long term success. Behavioral therapy shows clients the connections between their thoughts, emotions, and actions, revealing the stressful triggers that lead to opiate abuse. The end goal of treatment is to replace unhealthy behaviors that lead to addiction with substitutes that promote healthy coping skills and maintain stability.

Outpatient services are preferred when clients are experiencing mild symptoms and are currently in a stable living situation. Still, clients who come to the program in crisis may get referred to one of the department’s two psychiatric units for stabilization. These units are secure clinical settings with 24 monitoring and staff. Each unit is unisex, with 24 beds for adults 18 and older.

Treatment plans in the psychiatric unit vary between clients. They generally include a structured day of therapeutic activities and private meetings with a care team. Medication management is also provided. The length of treatment is determined by need, and clients are given an aftercare plan for continuing treatment and recovery before they are released.

The Sinai Hospital of Baltimore is accredited by the Joint Commission, the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehab Facilities.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Once a person has become addicted to a substance, drug rehab in Maryland is often necessary to overcome that addiction. These programs provide the tools individuals need to manage the physical, mental, and emotional issues involved and begin a successful recovery journey.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

My daughter is there and I can not stress enough the negligence from the staff and doctors! Absolutely ridiculous! I'm trying to get her transferred to another hospital. If I could give zero stars I would.

Arrived 9PM to join my aunt who arrived with her daughter 1 hour or more prior. Half an hour after CT was done and we were told we’ll get a result in a half an hour. About 11PM we started to see that people disappearing from the waiting room but are not called. 11:30 started to complain to a person up front and were told that CT is still not ready and there are two more patients in front. We asked again and again but heard the same response even though aunt’s condition was worsening and we mentioned it to front lady. Finally, we said we are leaving and at that time from lady called someone and told us that the is another patient is pulled from a room just to free it for us. Front lady moved my aunt to a location where, to our shock, were no people, couple empty rooms, no patient in corridor no rush no chaos, just four or more med sisters behind computers. One nurse came to introduce herself asking us for info. I told her the situation and it’s getting worse. At that time aunt started to complain about heartburn and increasing pain. I asked about CT and got an answer that no results available. I asked to call but nurse said nobody can call there. I asked for supervisor and was told he/she is not available. Some other nurse came in and said she will call. We repeatedly were saying that we are here for many hours and aunt is bagging for water. Ones again, we were told to be patient and wait for doctors visit, till then - no water. I asked for, at least, some ice cubes and we were permitted to give her some. 1:30, or so a supervisor showed up to hear our story. Few minutes later doctor came. 1:50 we were told medicine will be given for pain and heartburn. Some other nurse came to give medicine. Aunt vomited violently few minutes later. I rushed to get any assistance but there were no nurses around. None! We asked an only person behind computer desk to call for nurses, and we thought he did, but was waiting for someone on a phone. 2:37 medicine nurse came to tell us doctors looked, finally, at CT and consulting with another doctor. Doctor came couple minutes later. No nurses still. Dirty blanket, napkins, drops of vomit everywhere. No, at 2:54, we’re waiting for another doctor to show up…

Interesting that Sinai removed my negative review regarding omissions from my medical records. I would never use this hospital again. An omission is a lie - one that could affect my future medical care.

this is the absolute worst hospital that you could ever take your loved one to other than Northwest. moments after my loved one died a CNA or nurse tech came into the room to let us know that was the room she was assigned to and said well obviously I don’t have much to do in here tonight. that wasn’t the only one we had in with a specific person. I am shocked and appalled by the lack of professionalism and compassion that was shown to us during the loss of our loved one

This review is specifically for Michael Kaplan- he was the receptionist for a recent visit at the Gastroenterology/Endoscopy Department... I hope somehow his boss sees this because this man deserves a raise. Hands down the BEST customer service I've received in years!!! The kind where someone actually goes above and beyond, and makes you want to come back to a place (which is a tall order, nobody likes hospitals haha). If I still had a company where I was hiring staff, I would try to steal this man to work on my team. Thanks so much Michael for making a hospital visit... dare I say it... pleasant.

The worst experience ever in the emergency room. The front is excellent they help. But when they go to the back rooms zero stars no one cares. They worried about having side conversations then helping a patient out. I never want to be here again worst experience

Absolutely terrible experience being discharged from this hospital - orders incorrectly placed and routed, multiple people claiming “I don’t have the right paperwork” and no one willing to do anything about it, all the while putting patient health and well being at risk.
