very unprofessional, when i first got there, the people had kept getting confused about my paperwork, asking me the same questions and switching out the staff every 5 seconds to watch me while just filling out paperwork. i also told them my crocs where dirty and if we could clean them and they said they would but put them in my room anyways in a brown bag. theres was a bed bug scare and they cleaned out my room but took my belongings (papers and crocs in the bag) out of the room without my knowlage. they also lost all my stuff my mother brought during visitation, they where supposed to look through it and give it to me but i never got it and when i left they gave me clothes last minute since they where washing my clothes, they never got to washing them and gave me some extra scrubs to get me out of the hospital gown. when i finally got my stuff i was missing two outfits, a plushie, my crocs, and my piercings they made me take out. they called and couldnt find them. very unorganized and unprofessional.

This was the most traumatic experience of my entire life. I was sent to this hospital four hours from my home when I had no intention of hurting myself leaving more mentally ill than I have ever been in my life. They told me nothing on the first day and I got put in a room with a bed so thin you can feel the bed frame beneath it. I asked for extra clothes and they had none to give us. They were completely understaffed and didn t have enough resources to keep this place open. I was admitted on a 72 hour hold and with no reasoning I was told that my dad asked them to hold me longer. Neither of my parents had even been contacted by the hospital and only I had called them at all. Most of the start is disrespectful and unprofessional. In a place with so many fragile children they need staff who are highly trained to take care of these mental unstable people. They also had three mentally challenged children staying while I was there and no one knew how to care for them. They would sit in the corner by themselves for houses with no one watching them. Not one but two of these children had asked for they re stuffed animals for comfort and the nurses didn t care that these kids where breaking down. I was kicked from the cafeteria js because I speak loud and when I voiced that this was unfair especially because I have an eating disorder a doctor (Hector) laughed in my face and said you will be fine . Another incident that occurred was when my roommate came in my room while I was showering and it made me uncomfortable so I asked them to switch my room. Considering I have past sexual trauma I was distressed and disturbed. A group of nurses that could barely understood Me refused to listen to me and made me sit up till one in the morning before they switched my room after yelling at me and rolling their eyes at me. They did not do a good job at monitoring the kids taking their medication and they put us on whatever drugs they felt after saying they d need to contact my mom (which they still hadn t done at this point). They had told kids that they where keeping them there to see how the pills where effecting them. The doctors had all told me different things about when I d get to go home and I eventually had to go talk to a judge and convince him that I was fine to go home. The doctor only talked to me for maybe five minutes and wrote down only negative notes about me and assumed that my distress was a manic episode. He had no reason to hold me and was very disrespectful to everyone there, simply ignoring them and taking phone calls while they re speaking. No therapists are on the job and if they are it s a ten minute work sheet they call group which basically just tells you to take deep breaths. Everyone there is miserable and need professional help not to be lock away from society. I was let outside maybe three times my whole week stay and when I got out I felt like a complete different person. I felt ruined and broke in ways I ve never felt before. I had to ask for an extra blanket every day and I didn t get one till I was about to leave. We don t get deodorant and almost everyone smells. It felt like we were being held in some sort of experiment chamber. No one gave me any held and I was disrespected in ways I ve never been before. For a place that s supposed to help the unwell it made me so much worse. None of the staff is professional or trained and most barely speak English. There is so much more I could go on to explain, like how they told my friend they gave her a huge shot (IM) to make an example out of her or how they told me my behavior mattered but told other kids that even if they act out they ll still get out but this is all I can currently remember. DONT NOT SEND ANYONE HERE I WOULD NOT WISH THIS ON MY WORST ENEMY!!! PLEASE KEEP YOURE FAMILY SAFE!!!!

Accepted Insurance

Bakersfield Behavioral Healthcare Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Clients receiving treatment at an outpatient rehab typically do not require hospitalization or intensive supervision and support. Outpatient addiction counseling and recovery education are often offered during the morning, evening, night, and weekend, allowing clients to tailor treatment to their own schedule. Partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs are the most time-intensive and are designed for clients who are at an increased relapse risk and/or who need more robust therapeutic support.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.
12-step icon12-Step
Participants engaged in 12 step programs receive intensive peer coaching (sponsorship) and community support. Spiritual development as a means of achieving psychological and emotional healing and growth is the cornerstone of 12 step recovery, but religious affiliations are not required. Meetings are free, anonymous, and open to the public, though specialized formats are available, including groups for seniors, teens, and family members. Evening, night, and day meetings are conducted year-round in most communities.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
When an individual is in denial about their substance use disorder, their loved ones may organize a drug intervention in California. This effort involves gently but assertively confronting the individual about their substance use and sharing how it has affected those who care about them. A professional interventionist may also attend this gathering. Their expertise with intervention services can prove helpful in guiding the conversation to a positive result.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
During the first phase of recovery – detox – it is crucial to have 24-hour clinical care in California. This care provides constant monitoring in order to ensure your safely and comfort as you progress through the withdrawal process for drug or alcohol addiction. Licensed professionals prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and provide frequent monitoring to ensure your safely as addictive toxins leave your system.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. The length of stay at the detoxification program is determined according to the specific needs of the patient.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in California is a method that therapists often use for the effective treatment of substance use disorders. It is based on the principle that substance abuse stems from unhelpful ways of thinking and patterns of behavior, which can be changed by helping the individual learn better ways of coping.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Cant give a full experience quiet yet, but why does this facility make me feel like I'm going crazy? Lack of communication from doctor to parent, and the nurses just hang up. I'll give another review in a few days.....

I have a daughter and she is telling me that they are not careful with people who take care of themselves in the beds and do not clean the rooms and she warns them and the workers do not do much of their part. AND. THEY DO NOT OFFER THEM ANYTHING TO BE DISTRACTED LIKE BOOKS OR TO DRAW OR GAMES THAT HAVE THEM WORSE THAN A PRISON AND IF ONE SENDS THEM, IT IS SO THEY WILL HELP THEM WITH THEIR TEMPERAMENT AND THEY WILL LOVE THEM WORSE

Response from the owner3 months ago
Dear Ms. Orozco, we sincerely apologize for your experience. We take cleanliness and patient comfort and engagement seriously. Your feedback about activities for our patients is invaluable, and we will actively be working to improve in these areas. Thank you for sharing your concerns; we strive to create a better environment for all our patients. I invite you to reach out to our CEO, so she can personally address your concerns.

I was at this hospital for an assessment, and honestly, it was a really bad experience. It doesn’t seem like they have a dress code because my initial therapist was wearing a super low-cut dress, which was really unprofessional. She just told me, “I’m the therapist here. Anything you tell me is confidential unless you say you want to hurt yourself or someone else,” and right when she finished I literally heard her talking about everything I just told her in confidentially super loudly to the people in the office and that just pissed me off. When I got to the unit, no one told me what was going on—no orientation, no real communication. The nurses kept talking to me in the hallway in front of other people, which felt really uncomfortable. There’s no real therapy here, just group sessions where we basically just color pages. That’s not therapy. I asked for one-on-one therapy, but they never gave it to me. The staff are really hard to understand, even when they try to speak English, and when I talked to the doctor, it was literally less than a minute. Somehow, they decided my entire plan of care in that tiny amount of time. It didn’t feel like they actually listened to me. Also, the cleanliness is bad. When my roommate left, they just put someone from another room in my room without even cleaning it. I also kept hearing staff say they were short-staffed, which made me feel kind of bad for them especially the ones holding the clipboard all day, but at the same time, it just made everything worse. I will never come back here ever again and I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. It honestly felt like they didn’t care at all.

I wanna say this hospital is really bad the beds are really bad and so is the food. I got assaulted in this hospital too this day I have issues from the assault I was severely miss treated the day I was assaulted I was giving medication thru injection and told me I needed to calm down but I was scared and I was refused medical care and refused too be transferred to a medical facility when I needed medical treatment . Tell this day I have issues from the assault because it traumatized me I would give this place a zero star and it’s needs to be shutdown. I also tried to be transferred to a different mental hospital and the refused because the said I was fine in there but it made me more depressed would not recommend the teen unit
