About Harmony Hills

Harmony Hills is a 67 acre ranch in Altoona, Florida, that provides drug and alcohol rehab services for adults. In addition to substance abuse disorder (SUD), their staff has treatment programs for various mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety. They are a private facility with luxury amenities.

Harmony Hills places importance on psychotherapy as a tool for recovery. They explore various aspects of a client’s life in the past and present to examine the causes of their addictive behaviors.

Inpatient care offers an intense level of care for the most severe addiction symptoms. Clients receive support around the clock from a comprehensive health and support team while living in the facility. The length of a stay depends on a client’s needs, with extended treatment options available.

Clients are connected with a care team of counselors and therapists to craft a custom care plan that best addresses each client’s needs. In addition to medical support, clients learn coping skills through individual, group, and family therapy, 12 step therapy, relapse prevention education, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and EMDR therapy.

Harmony Hills has additional programs focusing on mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Sometimes, such problems can develop in those struggling with addiction or addictive behaviors who get used to coping with mental illness. Co-occurring disorder treatment allows staff to treat not only addiction but adjacent mental health concerns as well.

Co-occurring disorder treatment utilizes the same therapeutic approaches but simply adjusts the focus to include other diagnosed mental disorders. It’s been shown to decrease the chances of relapse in clients where mental illness exists alongside addiction.

The ultimate goal of the inpatient program is to prepare clients to return to their daily lives with a better understanding of addictive behaviors and the skills needed to overcome them. Before exiting the program, the cafe team works with clients to develop an aftercare plan focused on setting future goals and connecting with community resources that can help support ongoing recovery.

So my experience at harmony hills was great. I ended up with a 2 week extension because for once after my son's death and so many therapists later, I was finally getting somewhere.Melvin,Tim,Greg,&Amber helped me through this from 1on 1 to trauma tract and then some. BHT's WOW where do I start. They were AMAZING especially Shannon,Jessica,Sherman & Big Greg, but all in all the entire BHT staff does their job and they treat everyone equally their isn't no favortism. The nursing staff just wouldn't be the same without Tom on it he really knows and cares for his patients as well they all do but he gives you that true comfort.Mr Josiah the Executive Chef man his food is 5 star by itself along with his staff beside him especially Mrs Gwen. So all together it doesn't matter how many reviews anyone reads good or bad it's what YOU AS A INDIVIDUAL put into your recovery and mental health.and follow rules I was there when some of these people and their bad reviews was there so do what the book says , don't have sex , have drugs trying to be snuck in. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

This is easily the worst place I've ever been to. They lied about having equine therapy, which is the primary reason I decided to come there for treatment. While I was there my case manager refused to call and confirm my short term disability leaving me unable to pay my rent. The groups are pretty good. The staff here are sweet and caring, but managment is not. When I arrived in January I explained that I had a upcoming cancer screening and that I needed to be discharged by the 14th of February as I had already purchased my flight ticket. They waited until four days before my flight and then informed me that I needed proof of my procdure. When I proved my procedure, they finally gave me my discharge. The pools been out of service for a long time. It's algae filled and smells awful. This facility is falling apart, broken railings are in the back of the building, its a safty hazard. The worst thing about this place are the maditory three hour breaks, where there is little to nothing to do.

Accepted Insurance

Harmony Hills works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Florida provides quality treatment to help individuals overcome dependency related to a wide range of addictive substances. Programs address both the physical and mental aspects of addiction in order to help you make a full recovery.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Their nutritional counselors create individualized nutritional plan for each client. In addition, they offer a fitness coach that also creates an individualized plan that better fits the client's needs.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

This goes out to anybody who has been dealing with a loved one and has not been able to find help whether it’s for mental issues or drug and alcohol abuse. Over the last 10 years I have reached out to every agency begging for help for my son who unfortunately has been dealing with Mental health needs that doctors or centers either dismissed him or gave up on helping him. Finally, I was blessed to find this amazing place that not only got My Son the help he needed but is now a thriving 23-year-old because Harmony Hills paid attention and did everything they could to make sure he got the help he needed. If you or anyone Have tried everything and are still looking for the help you need you must call this place immediately. Trust me I’ve been going through this for years and I can finally sleep at night knowing my son has finally gotten the therapy he needed so badly. Everybody at Harmony Hills is so understanding and loving, and they go out of their way to help you whether you have insurance or not. They find a way to make sure you or your loved ones get the help that is needed. Kelly and Nicole along with so many other names I could put in this review that would take up half of what I’ve written are very professional kind, understanding ,and are lovely people to work with who really care. If you feel like you’ve reached the end of your rope as a mother, I’m telling you never give up and make the most important phone call of your life to Harmony Hills, anybody there will help you or one of your loved ones get the best help needed. After being on the phone with them for only 10 minutes within 30 minutes they had somebody on their way to pick up my son and I am so grateful I finally found them. I hope this review gives you some hope that there is an answer out there for you. Thank you Harmony Hills for saving my son‘s life. Lorie Gress

As a part of doing your research before going to Harmony Hills, I hope you take this review seriously. I was there from Jan of 2025 - Feb of 2025 for mental health. Upon the admissions call, I was promised horse therapy and a pool. Upon my arrival at the facility, I was told the pool had been closed for a few years because of a leak. (the pool itself looks disgusting and is not taken care of at all) I was also instructed not to touch, or feed the horses as they belonged to the neighboring equine facility. So both were lies just coming from the admissions department. During the admission, you are instructed to sign a document about the Baker Act or Marchman Act which they do not explain to you if you are not from Florida (which I am not so I had no idea what I was signing) You are also only allotted 2 twenty minute phone calls a week. There is a 3-hour period every day where you get to wander around the grounds bored if they don’t have any activities out, which is most of the time. They only have coffee available during breakfast hour. Yes, I said hour. I also suffer from a seizure disorder and there was an evening I had a few seizures and I ended up in the ER. After discharge from the ER, I was in the lobby for 5 hours waiting to be picked up by Harmony Hills. I had no phone, no wallet, so no ID. They told staff at the hospital they had no one able to pick me up. For the $4,000 a day you get out of us I think an Uber, or Lyft could have been called. I had to use a hospital phone to call my husband who got ahold of someone at Harmony Hills and then I finally had someone there in 30 minutes getting back to Harmony at 6AM. For the most part, therapists are great! BHTs are great as long as they aren’t violating HIPPA which does seem to happen. Or aren't hitting on you or aren't watching porn on their phone. There is a lot of favoritism that goes on amongst BHT’s and guests. Certain guests can get away with so much more than others. Behavior contracts aren’t enforced as they should be to prevent other issues from emerging into larger issues. However, Some guests have the behavior contracts enforced in full force. I guess it just depends on who you are. See the favoritism comment above. I never had this issue personally it was just my observation while I was there. Upon my discharge, I was given discharge paperwork that had appointment times on it for when I got home. I got home and called to verify the appointments, and it was a good thing I did because the appointments didn't exist. My prescriptions were also never sent to my pharmacy when I got home, and this is something I am still dealing with over a week later. Overall my experience within Trauma Track was great I overcame so much and my individual therapy was great as well. Group therapy could be worked on to keep people more engaged, the 3-hour space of literally nothing to do and being locked out of your cottages, is annoying. I did however meet some great people while I was there and made some lifelong friends.

ABSOLUTELY the WORST place to go for help! Noone would listen to me, they would just walk away if I was crying. Staff members talking about clients with other clients l, which is a huge HIPPA violation and the groups are a joke! And then, when u tell them u want to leave early (ama), they take hours and hours to get it done and then make y walk down the road a ways to make it call for ur ride to come get u. They will not let u call while in there. But hey, they care about u! Biggest lie I've ever heard!

On January 30, 2025, we received a phone call from an unnamed employee regarding my son’s infringement of a major rule governing patients at Harmony Hills. She told us his belongings were being collected, and he would be discharged from the treatment program. No other information was given pertaining to whether he would reside in a detention center or need legal counsel. We have reached out to several staff members leaving messages, but no one responds to our request. He supposedly has his mobile phone but neglects to reciprocate our inquiry. His mobile device may have been confiscated as instructed by staff personnel. Hopefully, he has a conduit to follow for coming home soon. We realize failure to follow the governing rules has consequences. If he failed to follow the rules fraternizing with females, he must answer to the repercussions. We accept the facts. However, we do not know the facts, or the trivia associated with the circumstances. The lack of transparency is unconscionable considering the outcome of that phone call on January 30. His alcohol addiction and mental health are still paramount. We are worried his stability and cognizance may be affected if he is solo with no backup. Ostensibly, Harmony Hills’ executive decision to suspend him from their psychiatric treatment has made the situation worse. The action to leave him in a foreign area, outside the parameters, without knowledge of the surrounding area or having safe transportation available may have put the last nail in the coffin. My son’s first mistake was not breaking their rules. His first misconception was to believe the facility would make a difference in his life. I have never witnessed just a blatant lie regarding Harmony Hills brochure detailing their dual-purpose Hippocratic oath. Compassion is not one of their mantras. After reading the reviews I am amazed the facility still has the license to treat such disparities. This place needs to be audited before future patients are deceived to believe that their method of treatment is standard. Who parades the accused before the entire compound population and uses the exercise as an example. We should have contacted local authorities in Altoona to inquire about his presence. And we also needed to initiate a welfare check since no further correspondence was given. Beware, don’t be bamboozled.

listen to the guy below me. Everything he says is true. Truly awful facility. In fact they deleted my last review which I didn’t know was possible and I have no idea how they have 4.2 stars. If you truly want to get better and this is your only option - may the force be with you. Maybe a couple good BHTs , most of the clinical staff is awful. It’s “voluntary” but they don’t let you leave without threats of hospitalization (baker act) which is GREAT (not) for people with mental health issues. Yes please lock me in a hospital room for 72 hours that will definitely help the case, just like they lock you out of doing anything besides sitting outside. Glorified jail/psychward but jail was less traumatizing. Go to a real rehab search around anywhere but here. If you’re reading this review I’ll be happy to help - unlike this facility. (Screenshotting this so once they delete it google and co. Just may have some interesting words for them. )
