About Tradition One

Tradition One in San Diego, California is a long standing nonprofit that provides addiction treatment services for adults seeking recovery. Their residential programs can provide you with structure, support, and connection in a setting where people genuinely want to see you succeed. What strikes us most about Tradition One is the way the staff, many of whom have walked this path themselves, bring honesty and real-life understanding to your recovery process.

There is no shortage of fun things to do while in the area. After your appointments, you can explore Old Town San Diego State Historic Park where you can walk through museums, browse unique shops, and try local restaurants like Casa de Reyes. You can also visit nearby Heritage County Park to enjoy Victorian homes and quiet paths, or grab a coffee at Old Town Coffee and Tea.

Tradition One wants to make treatment possible for you. They accept private health insurance, cash or self-payment, Medicare, and government funding for substance use treatment. Payment assistance may be available if you check with the facility.

Comprehensive Addiction Treatment Services

You can access residential long-term treatment with 24-hour care, relapse prevention support and anger management programs. The program also provides education and assistance with HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and hepatitis, as well as on-site HIV and Hepatitis C testing. You can participate in employment preparation, social and recreational activities, domestic violence prevention referrals, and conflict resolution training.

A Unique Peer Led Community

Tradition One is a special place that serves adult men, young adults, seniors, and clients involved with the criminal justice system. We like that Tradition One provides unique peer-led support through a Resident Peer Council and Executive Board that gives you a direct role in problem-solving and decision-making. The combination of peer leadership and staff who have personally experienced addiction gives this program something truly personal and meaningful.

Real Stories of Lasting Impact

The stories shared by past participants highlight the impact of Tradition One’s support. One former client credits the program with saving his life and helping him build a stable future. Another person shared that the staff’s individual care helped him see that life can continue after addiction.

My name is Charles Fischer I graduated the program on April 11th 2025. Although they were short-staffed, they made it work it's a safe place but it's not bulletproof no place is. I transitioned into a sober living house with the help of staff there especially Nigel the intake coordinator. I have my life back and from the bottom of my heart I say thank you...

Accepted Insurance

Tradition One works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

This place is not a good place they like to harass the people that stay there and not help you work to better your life. They don't even let people work there. You will only have a bad outcome or even possible jail from the workers there like to make your situation worse and try to make you a target with the others around. You are not safe this is not a safe place.

Where to start... When I first got to Tradition One I was clueless to what "tools" I needed to obtain to becoming truly sober and even more important, to STAY sober. But everyday I've spent at T1 that statement has become more and more false! I have learned to cope with my stress in a healthy manner, handle obstacles that arise productivity, the importance of critical thinking skills to help me avoid relapse, how to implement balance in my life, a strong work ethic, and most importantly I have manifested the desire to live a clean and sober life!! I am amazed in the positive transitions that my life has taken in the few months I've spent at Tradition One and am so grateful for the assistance I desperately needed to regain control of my life!! The staff at Tradition One has given me guidance and direction towards achieving sobriety! They have motivated me to become the very best me and have taught me the necessary skills so that I will consistently progress forward in this life long journey! The staff are not your stereotypical drug councilors (at least for me, they are not what I thought of when I pictured a drug and alcohol councilor). They teach by personal experience! At one point in their lives they were addicts who had to learn the exact same "tools" that they are teaching! (No brainier... If there is something challenging that you want to accomplish, learn from someone who has already accomplished it!) Every single staff member radiates passion and it is more than clear that they care about each and every individual progressing through the program! I'm going to end this by expressing my upmost respect for the program, Tradition One, as well the rockstar staff! Thank you for showing me how amazing life is meant to be!!
