About Oxford House – Onslow

Oxford House – Onslow in Greensboro, North Carolina, is one of 25 houses in Guilford County for men and women in early recovery from alcohol and drugs. The Oxford house model provides a peer supportive, sober living environment for persons reintegrating into society after giving up alcohol and drugs.

Origins of the Oxford House Model

The Oxford House model began in 1975 when a halfway house closed and Paul Molloy, who had been living in the house to support his recovery from alcoholism, took over the lease. He began the first equal-expense shared-pay system for sober living.

While the Oxford Houses of North Carolina and the Oxford Group that originated in the early 19th century are not directly related, the name of the Oxford House System was chosen in honor of the origins of the 12 Step program. Today, there are over 3000 Oxford House residential facilities throughout the country.

The Oxford House Model

The Oxford House does not provide therapy to residents; however, all residents are required to attend AA 12 Step meetings and must remain abstinent from drugs and alcohol. All residents share the costs of the lease and utilities. The average length of stay is 90 days, but residents may stay up to two years.

Each house runs autonomously from the other Oxford Houses in the system. However, there is a national website, and participants are encouraged after leaving to remain involved through peer support.

Oxford Houses operate as democracies. Officers are elected by the residents and serve a six-month tenure as a leader. Business meetings are held regularly to address house matters and oversee the daily workings of the house.

Research on the Oxford System

Research by the DePaul University in Chicago came to a positive conclusion about the Oxford model. They report, “Oxford House model, in comparison to those who solely attend 12 Step programs, might be more effective in empowering residents in their ongoing abstinence in a way that enhances the perception of control in their lives.”

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

There are many types of drug rehab in North Carolina. To receive treatment for addiction, you can choose from many inpatient and outpatient programs. Often, participants start with detox and work through a full continuum of care that continues with ongoing support for long-term recovery.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.
