I graduated this program in 2016. I had my daughter while I was there. I wasnt the easiest client to deal with. I gave them hell. Had a horrible attitude. Was so ungrateful. Looking back im so grateful for this program. They took me in with just the clothes on my back, got me hooked up with medicaid and foodstamps as well as a strong support system within the program. They offer parenting classes, therapy, child therapy, case workers, they house you while you are there and make sure you have somewhere safe to stay when you leave. I was allowed an extension by 2 months just to make sure I had somewhere to go since I was homeless when I came in. The staff are stern in policy but they truly care! They wouldn't be in this if they didnt! That's for sure! My daughter will be 10 in a couple months and I catch myself using the things I learned in parenting classes I took here before she was even born! I stop by there from time to time hoping to see some of the workers that were there when I was, and there are still several there!. Im forever grateful for unc horizons and I would highly suggest this place to any mother who is truly ready to get their life back!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Peaceful, Supportive Community. Freedom Recovery House in Durham has been a true blessing. It’s given me a peaceful space to heal and connect with others who understand the recovery journey. The sense of community here is powerful—I’ve found comfort in sharing, listening, and growing alongside my peers. It’s more than a recovery house; it’s a place where I feel heard, supported, and at peace.

I have been here for a long time and have 27 take homes. If u actually wanna get clean and not just use it bc u can’t find anything else than the place is good plus since getting a new head nurse “that we needed so bad” n when Anna was the director things have gotten much better. even tho Anna is not there anymore she got it together and it seems like the new director is following her lead, the only bad thing I can say about Baart is if someone skips line or being disrespectful and you say something then I would be punished by holding my take homes over my head while the other person who started the mess has no take home’s receive no kinda punishment.

I love my doctors! I've never had a doctor or their office actually meet me halfway. My therapist and psychiatrist are always there when I need them. I don't have to worry about making sure that I have a ride to get to and from my appointments, the virtual visits are very convenient, especially when you're a single parent. They work around the minor inconveniences when you have kids in the background yelling for you. They don't keep you on the phone any longer than needed, when you're the only parent taking care of them. The patient portal is very convenient as well, especially after hours. You can still get a hold of them to talk about changes to your information, needing to make or cancel an appointment, etc...they say that it could take up to 2 days for a reply. But I've never had to wait, but just a few minutes to get a message back.

God bless Sherry Rider, the goat 🐐 She has been an absolute savior in my life in terms of helping me regain my psychological, emotional, and mental health, and restoring my sense of identity and normalcy. I truly appreciate her transparency, authenticity, and genuine compassion and support for her group members, all grounded in mutual respect from both sides. What stood out most for me is how easy it was to connect with Sherry. She has a real ability to resonate with many walks of life, which is extremely important when it comes to understanding people’s needs in therapy. She’s one of those rare professionals who can bring both real insight and real humanity into the room at the same time. Honestly, I’m grateful for the impact she’s had on my journey.

I cannot say enough great things about the Durham VA Health Care System. I am 50 years old and have been treated by many VA and civilian doctors over the years — and I can honestly say Dr. Suggs is the best doctor I have ever had in my life. He is knowledgeable, patient, compassionate, and truly takes the time to listen. He made me feel heard and cared for, not rushed. That kind of dedication means everything. The Dental Clinic was just as impressive. Mrs. Davis was incredibly helpful and answered every single one of my questions with kindness and professionalism. She went above and beyond to make sure I understood everything and felt comfortable. The entire staff was top notch — professional, respectful, and genuinely caring. I have been to at least 20 VA facilities across the country, and this one stands above the rest. I actually live in Atlanta, but if I could, I would fly here just to receive care at this VA. Absolutely outstanding service and care. Thank you to everyone at Durham VA for what you do for Veterans.

Dr. John Villani treated me with the utmost respect and professionalism. I was seen quickly and received efficient, thorough care. He took the time to listen to all of my concerns and ensured I was properly anesthetized with enough lidocaine for an effective nerve block. The antibiotics he prescribed worked extremely well—my infection and pain are now completely resolved. As a nurse practitioner and former ER nurse, I truly appreciate high-quality, patient-centered care, and this was one of the most pleasant and efficient ER visits I’ve ever had. Thank you for such a positive experience!

I’m transgender and I was in TROSA from 2021-2023. I woke up with gratitude in my heart thinking about all the good that came from this program. Being a transgender female, I was given not only the opportunity to go into the women’s program but I also was provided hormones for my transition the ENTIRE time I was there along with counseling from a therapist and psychiatrist for mental health medication management, all for FREE. The medical department at TROSA is amazing!! I didn’t need anything but the clothes on my back when I showed up and they provided everything I needed plus MUCH more for the duration of my time there. The staff not 1 time misgendered me or made me feel different and I was treated like all the other girls; and for that I am very very thankful!! I greatly benefitted from my 4 week stay at Carolina House. While it was not perfect (no place is), I would definitely go back in the future if needed. One thing to note: I almost didn't go because the sample schedule they send you looks packed full from morning to night. This is definitely not the case. There's far more break time than group time. In fact, groups are frequently cancelled and are often shorter than the allotted time (which was my biggest complaint while there, since I had come in hopes of an intensive therapy experience). That said, the groups are mostly helpful and the staff were usually pleasant. The house is clean and comfortable and the back deck is nice when the weather permits.

Carolina House saved my life. I am forever grateful for my amazing therapist, Marisa, and dietician, Sarah, who worked extremely hard to help me reach my goals. CH was flexible with my needs and made me feel safe and comfortable. With any treatment center, there were flaws. You have to be motivated and willing to do the work independently as at times the supervision is limited. I was exposed to many new foods that I previously would have never tried! Shout out to Kenly for all the variety. 1:1 Exposures, restaurant outings, and weekend outings made you feel more “normal” in a stressful situation. The BHA’s were always there when needed, even in the middle of the night. Nursing never made me feel like a burden or uncomfortable when talking about health concerns. The homelike setting made it easier to carry over skills when I was discharged. Be brave and do the next right thing.

This facility saved my life. I don't have enough good words to say about Carolina House. Staff were so great. I had a wonderful therapist (Anna) and a great dietitian (Emma). I was challenged in ways I didn't realized I need to be challenged in. I left in such a good place in my recovery thanks to Carolina House. There are definitely problems with the facility but there is no perfect facility. There might be some problems but the good outweighs the bad. You do need to be in a place where you want recovery as this program is meant for those with self-accountability.

Ok, for one, it seems many of the people here that write reviews don't have any idea how psychiatrist do their jobs. And furthermore, you don't give a negative review because you couldn't figure out there is a parking garage next to the building. I am seeing Arkady Millard, who has been great at listening to me and understanding my scenario. She has been tremendously helpful, and has given me confidence in the Duke system. Yes, sometimes you have to try different things, for those of you out there that think you get a magic wand and a solution the first time. Mrs./Miss Millard is really a gem and an asset to the Duke Psychiatry system. I cannot thank her and the Duke system enough for existing and having staff that can empathize with what some people may be experiencing. Yes, medical systems can be "cookie cutter"; you can't have a perfectly individualized plan all of the time and medicine works this way everywhere in the U.S. Duke just does it with passion and empathy and this brings me to a level of comfort I seldom feel at other places. Thank you!!! Especially Arkady!

This place is a godsend. They have a variety of doctors that can help you with whatever problem you are having. My doctor in particular is very awesome. For the following reasons: 1. He talks to me on basically a equal level. 2. He always says what he suggests we try as part of my therapy plan, but he then asks me if I would like to try it. This is important because by giving me the choice instead of lording over me, it makes it more likely that I will try it with an open mind. 3. He's really super nice to me. 4. He's not judgemental of the things that I tell him about. He just asks if that's working for me. Oftentimes we find out it isn't and he suggests an alternative idea in that regard. Your experience may be different depending upon the physician you get but they have a variety of new and seasoned professionals there to help you with your life goals.

Been going for about 2 months, couldn't ask for nicer people imo. This at at the Durham BND but it's very clean and like I said the people are so nice I don't know how they found em. May not always see eye to eye about certain things but very professional good people so far. I would recommend them to anyone that needs help with addiction.

I just want to take a moment to recognize the amazing team at B&D Integrated Health Care—especially my doctor partridge and my peer support worker tyesha. From day one, they’ve treated me with real respect, patience, and understanding. My doctor takes the time to actually listen and explain things in a way that makes sense, which makes a huge difference. And my peer support worker has been there for me on a level that goes beyond just “doing a job”—they truly care and show it through their support and consistency. It’s not easy to find people who genuinely have your best interest at heart, but I’ve found that here. I’m grateful for the guidance, encouragement, and professionalism they’ve shown me. Highly recommend B&D Integrated Health Care to anyone looking for a team that really cares.
