About The Resource Group Counseling and Education Center

Resource Group is an outpatient facility in Towson, Maryland. They provide an immersive outpatient addiction treatment program, DUI programs, therapy, and medication management. The goal of treatment is to provide tools to help you structure your pathway to wellness.

During the immersive outpatient program, you can expect to participate in three days per week of 90 minute group treatments. This program also includes an individual therapy session once a week. Treatment sessions focus on training in self-help, relapse prevention, psychoeducation, and mindfulness. You’ll be encouraged to attend 12 step meetings and other self help groups outside of treatment.

The standard outpatient program consists of two 90 minute group therapy sessions per week. To qualify for this program you must have two to three months of continuous sobriety. The state approved DUI and DWI programs include a 12 hour and a 26 hour class option. The classes are held every Tuesday evening and program length is dependent on clinical evaluation.

Former clients say that treatment at this facility helped them and that their therapist was instrumental in their growth. Other former clients mentioned the administration and payment side of the facility was disorganized.

Accepted Insurance

The Resource Group Counseling and Education Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
12-step icon12-Step
Attending twelve-step meetings is not required, but they strongly encouraged. They do not promote any particular philosophy or spirituality to their clients, they just see it as the most easily accessible support system available to those in recovery. They begin our groups late enough in the morning and early enough in the evening so that those IOP can attend the meetings.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Once a person has become addicted to a substance, drug rehab in Maryland is often necessary to overcome that addiction. These programs provide the tools individuals need to manage the physical, mental, and emotional issues involved and begin a successful recovery journey.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in Maryland emphasizes your current life rather than what has happened in the past. Your therapist will help you develop methods to deal with current and future challenges so you can cope in healthy ways that don't involve substances.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

When you participate in couples therapy, you learn how to understand each other better, improve your communication skills, resolve conflict, and improve relationship satisfaction. Your therapist will help you develop skills in each of these areas to strengthen your relationship.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

I've been a patient for over a decade and love my Dr. The front office is ridiculous. They never remember my insurance and so I've been over charged (again) enough to cover the next almost 3 years of visits. I've been calling for 3 weeks for a reimbursement and the lady in charge (Aaron) will not return any calls. And go figure, she's the office "manager" not sure how they can think " oh, let's just keep his money, he's probably going to be back" and just keep peoples money because of a mistake on their part. Again, My Dr. Is GREAT! the office is not!

Couples therapy with Eric has been a transformative experience, and the front desk staff are always friendly and accommodating. Their portal is easy to navigate, and the sessions we've had over the course of several months have equipped my partner and I with the tools we needed.

I highly recommend Brittany Simpson if you’re in need of a good therapist. My 10-year-old is her patient, and I can’t express enough the positive changes I’ve seen. At the start, my daughter was very reluctant and didn’t want to talk. When I first told her she would be meeting with a therapist, she was adamant that she didn’t want to go, even saying she would lie or refuse to speak. When I met Brittany, I explained that my daughter was a hard shell to crack and rarely opened up or shared her feelings. I felt helpless and as though I was failing her because I could see she was hurting inside, but I didn’t know how to help. Fast forward almost a year, and my daughter is thriving. She’s now eager for her weekly sessions and even looks forward to them. I’m incredibly grateful for the positive relationship they’ve built and the benefits therapy has brought to her life. I also want to mention that Brittany is Black. Finding a Black therapist was important to me because my daughter attends a majority-white school and we live in an all-white neighborhood. At her school, there are only two Black teachers on staff, and the other Black employees work in support roles. While I have the utmost respect for those roles, I wanted my daughter to see more Black professionals she could connect with and look up to. Brittany’s impact has been truly positive, and I’m so grateful. Now, the downside: the front office staff has been very unpleasant. Pattie, in particular, acts as if I’m inconveniencing her whenever I ask for assistance or have questions. In person, she was just as rude as over the phone, even yelling at my 5-year-old son not to touch something. My son has a diagnosed developmental delay, and her behavior was uncalled for. While I hesitate to label her as racist, it feels as though my voice and presence aggravate her. I’m certain she doesn’t speak to others the way she does to me and my children. For context, I hold two master’s degrees and have been in my career since 2006. My husband is an engineer, and we live in an affluent neighborhood. I wanted to write a review for Dominique Pope, but since I couldn’t post a new one, I’ll keep it brief and say this: Back in April, my daughter was diagnosed with a processing disorder, mild depression, anxiety, and ADHD. At the evaluation, they couldn’t determine if ADHD was the primary cause of her inability to focus or if the processing disorder was a factor. It was recommended that we see a professional to address these concerns. I went into full mama bear mode and started researching. I initially found Brittany, shared what I was looking for, and she recommended Ms. Pope. I was hesitant because of some negative reviews, but I’m so glad I gave her a chance. Ms. Pope took the time to truly listen—she discussed my daughter’s needs, my concerns, and the direction I wanted to take. She and my daughter clicked immediately. It’s clear Ms. Pope genuinely cares about her patients and doesn’t push any medication without careful consideration. After some trial and adjustment, she found the perfect ADHD medication for my daughter. The results have been transformative. My daughter is no longer showing signs of depression or heightened anxiety, and I can distinguish between hormonal changes and depression. Here’s the best part: she went from a C student to a straight-A student and was placed in GT (Gifted and Talented) for reading and writing. She’s focused, eager, and motivated to succeed. I’m so thankful for these ladies—they helped change my little girl’s life. If you can get past Pattie, give them a call. You won’t regret it! These black women ROCK…
