About Sy Kaplan VA Clinic

Sy Kaplan VA Clinic is located in Palm Desert, California. They offer outpatient services such as mental health care and addiction treatment for veterans and military members who suffer from different types of substance misuse disorders. They also treat co-occurring mental health conditions and offer medication assisted treatment (MAT).

The mental health conditions they treat here could include anxiety, depression, PTSD, schizophrenia, and more. These issues can be fairly common in the veteran community since many veterans face lots of trauma caused by their time in the military.

Their MAT program uses medications such as Vivitrol or Suboxone to help reduce symptoms caused by severe withdrawal. It could also help lower cravings. They also offer specialized services for members of the LGBTQ+ community, such as hormone therapy, along with the clinic’s regular medical care. You can also access health maintenance and community support at this location.

These types of VA clinics also have counseling services such as individual therapy and group therapy, along with marriage or relationship counseling. All of these pillars of therapy help clients learn coping techniques and identify triggers while dealing with any past traumas that were making it extra difficult to live their best sober life.

In group therapy, you can meet with others who can identify with your story, allowing everyone involved to learn and grow from each other’s experiences. This can help bring accountability into your journey and make connections with people who may be able to continue helping you even long after your outpatient treatment has ended.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

If you have an appointment and just go in for basic stuff it's good in and out. However if you are looking for specific help such as signed forms or something like that it's such a terrible experience. The admins don't ensure that the forms are properly filled out it's almost like they are just there to check a box. Ive been trying to get a form filled out for about two months now. The phone number listed is also not their number but a number to the call center in Loma Linda. It's so frustrating when people are not doing what they should be doing. I mean that's your job so if you're not doing that then what are you doing?

I have the most horrific experience with Leslie. I have an infection and VA Loma Linda arranged for my antibiotic shot to be administered at this clinic. I gave her information requested, she said she’ll call me bac, never did. Called her back, she stated that she’s communicating with the Nurse. Frustrated I finally set up an appointment for 1:30 10/24/24. She informed me that the nurse Sarah will call me. I doubt, if that information is accurate. I am a Nurse with post grad degree and a Veteran. I am going to file an official complaint and will go as high as I can and will include VA Rep in the Senate. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE WITH THI VETERAN..

I really love this place. It's been here for a year or 2. But today was icing on the cake. I have an appointment to see my doctor tomorrow for annual visit. Haven't had a chance to go for labs till today. The young lady that helped me was nothing short of amazing. Taking blood from me can be difficult, from past experience. The lab tech today, Cheryl P., was awesome to say the least. With no appointment, she had me in, found the best vein, no pain at all, took 3 miles, and I was out of there. I've been in there longer with an appointment. My hats off to the VA. I've never seen her there before, but you got a great lab tech with Cheryl. Great job!

No phone direct to Palm Desert Clinic. Have to call Loma Linda and get transferred many times. Today is Sept. 7, 2023 and my Dr. ordered blood labs to be done by Sept. 13. After several calls and wait times exceeding 25 minutes, was finally transferred to Palm Desert to be told not accepting phlebotomy appointments until after Sept.18 due to "staffing issues" and am now waiting for a call back. This has been a recurring issue. Congressman Raul Ruiz will be notified as well as Patient Advocacy. Not acceptable treatment for any Veteran. UPDATE: I did receive a call from Congressman - (D) Raul Ruiz's office and gave me a direct number to them to report any further issues. 5 months later still having same problem. UPDATE: As of May 1, 2024 they now have their own Phlebotomy Services on site with no appointments required. System, appears to be faster and smoother at this time. Phlebotomy no longer contracted by private company. Yeah! Also, more medical services available.

Supposed to have phisical. Instead, was asked for labs (but no ordering physician, apparently). Phlebotomist asserts injection drug use after asking for un-ordered urinalysis. Physical is re-rescheduled for over 2 months further out. No notation or rationale for either cancelation. As others have mentioned, not all "employees" are directly employed w VA. Many are unable to use the software interface. Interestingly, all kiosks were removed. Several "patients" come to check in counter, wait, and leave with no appointment. Some beeing rude and disrespectful to other patients, extremely unusual as veterans tend to go out of their way for fellow vets and their family. Facilities have been "open" for a few years now, almost 3. Still not properly staffed. The old VA facility pictures have been attached to the new facilities location near freeway. Odd. Do several vetrans NEED to start opening cases w the patient advocate office(s)?

The "doctors" will bold face lie to you as they actively abuse and neglect every patient. They only care about getting paid and literally bill the government then never actual provide the service. The place should be shutdown for how ot abuses veterans. Contact the White House VA advocates and they will help you. This clinic does nothing
