Cliffside is top notch. This place will meet even the pickiest of people’s needs. The staff goes above and beyond for their clients everyday. Gretchen the staff supervisor welcomed me with open arms and saw my immediate needs were met quickly and with haste. She really cares and is great at listening and offering thoughtful solutions in the moment. She really makes things happen. Pierre is the cream of the crop, he picked me up and brought me to Horizons House and calmed all my nerves on the way in. He unpacked my clothes and hung all of them in the closet and showed me around and introduced me to the other clients. The therapist I had was more like a great friend. Jill put me at ease and an instant connection was made. She is the best of the best!! I’m going to miss Cliffside very much, I owe them everything. The program was so great and the facilitators were extremely educated and welcoming. If you come across this in your search I promise this is the place to go with. You won’t find anyone as genuine and knowledgeable in this line of business. They gave me my life back and all with 5 star service and accommodations.

I had a great experience, or as great an experience as you can have in rehab. The staff were incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and supportive. Most of the staff are also in recovery or have family in recovery, which made me feel more supported and less judged. I definitely felt like I grew significantly during my 30 days there.

Accepted Insurance

Cliffside Malibu – Luxury Addiction Treatment works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Medi-Cal

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. The length of stay at the detoxification program is determined according to the specific needs of the patient.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

I'd probably give four and a half because nothing is perfect; sometimes the communication isn't the best across shifts. There are some groups that feel redundant, some facilitators are more effective than others, one doctor neglected to tell me about the side effects of a medication, and the food, while surprisingly excellent, occasionally isn't as varied as it probably should be. However... This was an absolutely incredible experience. If it weren't for a little "senioritis" at the end (my therapist's characterization, not mine) that had more to do with the dynamic of the patients who had recently arrived at the house (not their fault, just different from when I came and we really clicked) and my own desire to get on with my life, I'd have stayed longer. And tried to! I learned from all the facilitators, was impressed with the techs' attention to detail, and appreciated the commitment of everyone as well as their remarkable investment in our recovery. I particularly loved the vast array of personalities of the staff and counselors that made my experience like a rich and rewarding novel. I actually looked forward to groups. I'll save specifics for a personal note I plan to send -- many of the staff members are also in recovery and I don't want to accidentally "out" anyone who wouldn't appreciate it -- but the authenticity of the people is what makes this place so wonderful. It's my first time in rehab, and maybe this isn't the greatest place for people who have been to rehab before. Or so I heard from a patient or two. But I feel more ready to make sobriety last because of Cliffside Malibu Horizon Hills and, more specifically, the people who dedicate their lives to this important work. They even made the weekly "sober outings" -- the movies, bowling, mini-golf-- more fun! An important note: I resisted going here at first because Malibu kind of reeks of elitism. And make no mistake, Malibu is terrible. At least for me. In our few forays into the town -- Starbucks, the beach, the gym -- the place didn't disappoint; it's as vain and shallow as you'd expect. The view is spectacular but that's about all it has going for it, especially for an inveterate New York snob like me (though I now live in Seattle). Haha. But the people who work at CM, and particularly at the Horizon Hills house where I lived for 29 days, are honest and real and invested. I'm proud of my progress so far but can say with absolute certainty that I wouldn't have gotten there with just any rehab. I was cynical when I entered; I emerged excited for a sober life. I can't even believe I just typed those words. Thank you to everyone. I'm confident that because of this experience, I may never see you again! Except, maybe, hopefully, in a different setting.

I don’t usually write reviews like this, but I felt it was important to share my experience in hopes that it helps someone else – or encourages the facility to do better. When I first reached out to Cliffside, I was in a very vulnerable place. I was struggling with alcohol, panic attacks, anxiety, and anger, and I knew I needed help. After speaking with them months ago, I was told I could get into the program. They said they would help work with me on my deductible, and I left the call feeling hopeful and excited about finally getting support. I waited nearly two months to get things in order with insurance and my schedule. During that time, I even managed to stop drinking for a short period, trusting that I would soon be entering a program where I could build healthier coping tools and truly begin to heal. But when I followed up, everything changed. Suddenly, I was told I no longer qualified because I “didn’t drink enough.” I was devastated. I had been holding out for this program, and to be told I no longer qualified—not because I was better, but because I wasn’t in the “right” crisis—felt like a punch to the gut. Out of desperation and emotional overwhelm, I started drinking again, hoping someone would finally see I needed help. Still, I received no follow-up, no support, no entry into the program. I feel incredibly abandoned by a place that claims to help people heal. It’s heartbreaking to put your trust in a facility, to open up about your pain, and to be left with nothing. I’m now scrambling to find a program—any program—that will take me. I still want help, but the path I thought would be there for me completely vanished. This has only made my anxiety and panic attacks worse. What’s most upsetting is that Cliffside made me feel like I mattered, like I was finally going to be supported. That promise was broken. And for someone already struggling with their mental health, that kind of disappointment can be crushing. I hope this review serves as a reminder that people who reach out for help are often hanging on by a thread. Please treat them with care, clarity, and consistency. That could be the difference between healing and hurting.

My adult son had been in two prior outpatient rehabs. When insurance covered his treatment at Cliffside, I was initially skeptical of such a luxury experience with weekly massages, sound baths, acupuncture, cleaning and laundry service, fresh, organic cooked meals, outings, yoga, trips to the gym and spectacular views. It seemed more like a vacation I thought. But, it turned out to be just what my son needed. With these experiences and the small ratio of clients:providers, he was able to finally open up and start addressing the pain he had been numbing with substances. Tanya, his case manager, helped him with his needs and setting him up with outpatient care. Roxan, his therapist, was a tremendous help to him. Family sessions are available and the nurses and tech staff also offered great support. Patients have to option to be taken to AA, Smart Start, and NA meetings as well. My son didn't want to leave! My only suggestion would be to have online family meetings available in the evenings/after work hours. I am very grateful for the care my son received.

Words cannot begin to express my gratitude to Cliffside Malibu for Saving and Changing my life forever. They have/had so much more to offer than other places and programs that I have gone to. This time it has really stuck for me. My life is free and reset. The houses make you feel like your at home. The staff is great! Most are in active recovery themselves and some were actually prior clients themselves. That stood out alot to me and gave me comfort and hope. That feeling that someone who I didn't know, really cared about me. Everything was clean, worry free and the good was excellent. I am so glad I STARTED my recovery from addiction's at Cliffside Malibu Ca.. Matt J. from Kansas City, Mo.
