About Texas NeuroRehab Center

The Texas NeuroRehab Center is located in Austin, Texas, just 10 minutes from downtown. This is a comprehensive and highly specialized treatment facility that supports children and adults who need medical rehabilitation services and behavioral health care for a substance abuse struggle or a coexisting mental health struggle they’re working through. The care team here is also equipped to work with individuals who experienced severe brain injuries either from an accident or chronic disease like substance abuse.

They offer services in both an inpatient and outpatient setting and some of these services include medically supervised detox, residential treatment for children, and inpatient psychosocial programming that addresses the psychosocial effects brought on by substance abuse disorder or a co-occurring mental health disorder.

Comprehensive Care

This facility specializes in brain function after an illness or injury. If your brain function has been impaired or distorted because of substance abuse struggles, you’ll find that the services here are highly individualized to you.

They have an interdisciplinary care team that operates under the inpatient psychosocial rehabilitation program. This team includes neuropsychologists, addiction specialists, case managers, social workers, and chaplains. You’ll be supported from all angles in the way that works best for you whether it’s through spiritual support, behavioral health counseling, or psychotherapy skill building services.

Hi my name is Tara I was a female patient 17 at Tnc through January to may. First of all to the parents that are looking for better treatment for your child DON'T SEND THEM HERE unless you want your child to get worse when they discharge them DON'T look at this place. What was my experience like awful the units are not clean thay constantly smell like urine the staff are rude as can be and will gladly laugh as they put you or your child in a restraint I watched a girl get her nose broken by another girl on the unit. I watched a 14 year old girl get sextually assaulted by two grown men in a restraint while in a head lock there were unit riots almost every two weeks. there were staff that did not care about your mental health or physical health people on the unit were constantly fighting each other. They will give out chemical restraints like candy in a syringe with a needle. The staff love gossiping about patients history and restraint history. But there were very few staff members that were really good and got me through my struggles. But with this place and the way it it I would highly recommend that this place should be considered a high risk long-term psych facility.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

During rehab in Texas, you'll deal with underlying issues that contribute to addiction. By addressing these challenges and learning healthy ways to cope with them, you'll develop strategies that help you live a drug-free lifestyle.

Dual Diagnosis occurs when a person has both an alcohol or drug addiction and an emotional or psychiatric problem at the same time. The term dual diagnosis is often used interchangeably with the terms co-occurring disorder, co-occurring illness, dual disorder, co-morbity and co-morbid disorder.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Horrible experience for my daughter. I took her out of behavioral RTC because she wasn’t safe and got jumped by other females there, scratched her neck, face.Other kids stole her clothes and bunny. She discharged over five weeks ago and I still haven’t received her clothes, personal items, they sent her home with an empty suitcase. They didn’t allow her to have her cpap there and staff weren’t helping her with her dental retainers so they got lost or thrown away.

After five weeks in the hospital following a traumatic brain injury sustained in a car accident, my daughter was transferred to Texas Neuro Rehab Center. She has a disorder of consciousness—a condition I later learned they don’t even treat. They offer a one-size-fits-all approach: administer drug stimulants and, if the patient is deemed “responsive enough,” they’ll receive physical, occupational, and other therapies. But what happens if your loved one isn’t responsive yet? Almost nothing. My daughter spent three months there—at $70,000 per month. And for that cost, there was no effort to optimize her sleep/wake cycle, no nutritional strategy, no sound therapy, no light therapy, no comprehensive treatment plan for a brain trying to heal. She received very little therapy at all because she was “too unresponsive”—a cruel catch-22 in a place that should know better. Had I known then what I know now, she never would have been sent to Texas Neuro. There are facilities that do specialize in disorders of consciousness. Facilities that understand healing doesn’t begin with responsiveness—it begins with intervention. Families need to know exactly what this facility does and does not offer before entrusting their loved one’s recovery to them.

Our 34 year old daughter was in Texas NeuroRehab Post acute brain injury center for over 2 months after a severe brainstem stroke. Her care there was outstanding. The staff went above expectations to help her. Literally every employee was kind and went the extra mile to make her stay comfortable and productive. She was treated with love and respect and made to feel like a family member. I would highly recommend this facility.

This review is for the TNC- Residential facility, specifically the sierra unit and staff, who doesn't get enough credit for their hard work and dedication, unfortunately! For the past few years we needed urgent help with our teenager who was a wrecking ball due struggles academically and socially. After a lot of researching we had her in waitlist in two different facilities, by a turn of faith, we were called by both on the same week with availability, we were apprehensive but excited at the same time, a mix of emotions. We knew we weren't sending our troubled teen to a 5* hotel, and there were a lot of anxiety about expectations, we knew she could come back home even worse than she went... We are blessed beyond measure we did! It isn't all perfect as we know a FASD child has her own pace for everything in life, however, after one full month back at home, we can tell that she is much better, and the chaos in our home and lives is a thing of the past. Thank you TNC as a whole, Thank you Sierra Unit Staff! We are forever grateful for taking good care of our girl.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Hi, Lana. It means the world to us that you took time out of your day to leave us this great feedback. Thank you, and we hope you have a pleasant day.

My husband was a patient at Texas Neuro Rehab hospital twice. Once in 2014 and again in 2024. In 2014 he was 57 years old. He had by-pass surgery, there were complications, which led to a long hospital stay of over 60 days. He had three heart surgeries within about a two-week period. He was intubated twice for a total of about three weeks. He had double pneumonia. His thoracic surgeon suggested Texas NeuroRehab because of their great rehab program and expertise in dealing with pulmonary issues. When my husband arrived at Texas NeuroRehab in Jan. 2014, he was not walking, could not sit up. he was receiving tube feeds, he had double pneumonia, a bed sore, throwing up and diarrhea. Within about one week the pneumonia was much better, he had it for over six weeks in the hospital. He was up sitting in a wheelchair, no diarrhea or throwing up. The bed sore healed in less than two weeks. Within four weeks he came home on a walker. The doctors and nurses and the neurologist were outstanding and had faith that my husband would make a full recovery, which he did. They met with me each week to review his progress and were very honest about his progress, letting me know that a huge part of his recovery was his full participation in therapy sessions. He came home in four weeks on a walker. He no longer needed the walker after being home for about a week and within a month of coming home he repaired an old car. He went back to work for over 10 years. In December 2023, my husband contracted COVID, he went into the hospital on December 7, 2023. He had two seizures (he had never had a seizure in his life). Other issues occurred in the hospital causing him to get fluid in his lungs causing him to be intubated for about two weeks. He was in the hospital for about 48 days. I requested rehab at Texas NeuroRehab. Some hospital doctors and therapist tried to convince me that my husband could not tolerate three hours a day of therapy, five days a week because he was weak and unable to stand and he was 67. The Texas NeuroRehab intake nurse, Cassie McIntyre, contacted me immediately to start the process. It took almost two weeks because of issues with the hospital and insurance wanting him to go to a "skilled nursing" facility. I knew my husband would receive excellent care at Texas NeuroRehab. I said NO to a "skilled nursing" facility. Cassie encouraged me to not give up. She helped me with an insurance appeal. She and the hospital case manager, nurses and techs on the heart floor were awesome!!!! My husband arrived at Texas Neuro Rehab on Jan. 29, 2024. I stayed with him his entire stay. He was not walking; he could not stand for more than a few seconds. He was receiving tube feedings, which hospital therapists communicated he needed indefinitely and suggested putting a tube in his stomach. Within one day of being at Texas Neuro Rehab. The speech therapist, Greg did a swallow test and felt confident that my husband could start eating food, again. By Friday of the same week the tube was removed. Within about 1 1/2 weeks, I was able to dress him without help. He came home on Feb. 26, 2024. He is walking without a walker, driving, performing household tasks and completing some home repairs. I believe my husband would not have recovered and gotten back to his life, if not for the doctors and therapists. Dr. Laura Gilbey, who believed he could benefit from being at Texas Neuro Rehab and encouraged Cassie to continue working with me. Dr. Amy Arrant, Dr. "Chip" and therapist at Texas Neuro Rehab - Greg, Cameron, Michelle, Jennifer, Jessika. They believe he would return home to live a normal life, taking care of himself without assistance. The facility was very clean. Nurses, techs and front desk staff were very professional and caring. The insurance denied my husband's last week stay at Texas NeuroRehab. Dr. Arrant refused to send him home because he was not medically ready to be discharged. I cannot thank Dr. Arrant enough for keeping my husband at Texas NeuroRehab until he was ready to be released. Blessings Texas Neuro Rehab staff!!

I am currently a patient here due to a rare disease which makes my muscles very weak on my right side, Before I came here, I spent 50 days in the ICU at Dell Seton, a premier #1 trauma center, so I was very weak all over from deconditioning. The therapists and nurses here are top notch: in terms of caring and professionalism, certainly on a par with Dell. In the two weeks I’ve been here, we’ve seen tremendous progress: I’ve gained back almost all my independence, and between OT and PT therapists (all of them highly skilled, compassionate, and adaptable in adjusting exercises to match up with your abilities). I think I have learned how to improve continuously, and how to be careful and proactive to avoid a fall. I just read the review from the lady whose loved one was injured, and think I can provide helpful context: this is one of few neuro-specific rehab centers in the US. People come here from all over the country for treatment. If someone is severely disabled, and most people here are, often their limbs are stiff and inflexible. I can certainly understand how an accident like that could occur…the “techs” are obviously less trained and lower paid than nurses, but many of them have worked here for years. It’s inspiring to see these young people constantly being cheerful, encouraging and serving patients who can’t respond and have very slow progress. If you or a loved one suddenly needs this type of care, I cannot recommend Texas Neuro highly enough…they deserve 10 stars!

My fiancé, Terry Conner, 44 years old was accepted into the Texas Neuro Rehab center back in November of 2023 with an Anoxic Brain injury. In the first couple of weeks we saw some positive improvements in Terrys condition. However, it was a few months later when we went up on our every Sunday visit that we walked into Terrys room and he began crying immediately when he saw me walk into his room. When I asked Terry if he was in pain he just screamed and says yes. After looking Terry over, I soon discovered that his shoulder had a huge knot sticking out of it that was not there before that day. When I called a nurse and the tech into Terrys room and asked them what happened, there response was this, “oh my god I hope we didn’t do that to him when We showered and dressed Terry this morning. I was in shock!! These are the people that I trusted to take care and f my loved one’s be and instead they injured him. Those girls had jerked his arm so hard that they pulled his shoulder out of socket so bad they had to transfer Terry by ambulance to st David’s hospital where Terry then under went surgery to fix his shoulder
