About Heywood Hospital

Their mental health program can support you through a variety of treatment options. Their outpatient counseling services provide both individual and group therapy. This is a good option if you need support but prefer a flexible approach that doesn’t interfere too much with your daily life. If you need a little more structured help they also offer an intensive outpatient program. This program is a step up from regular therapy to give you more focused care while still allowing you to stay at home and maintain your regular responsibilities.

If you or a loved one is in urgent need they have staff available around the clock to help stabilize your situation. I like that they have this strong support system in place for those tougher moments.

They also have specialized services like medication management and psychiatric evaluation. These can be really helpful for getting to the bottom of what’s going on and finding the right treatment path for you.

When you complete their treatment program you may also receive aftercare. These services provide ongoing support for long term success. They may include continued counseling, support groups and referrals to community resources.

This hospital and its staff completely mistreated my type one diabetic emergency, no one took my blood sugar reading until I was in cardiac arrest, resulting in a loss of oxygen to my brain that caused a stroke that has left me partially paralyzed and with a traumatic brain injury. I DO NOT RECCOMEND!!!

If you love being overcharged, paying your bills and STILL being sent to collections because of how poorly the billing department is run, then Haywood is the place for you. I have had good experiences with the individual doctors, but absolutely terrible experience with the hospital and would 10/10 drive anywhere but here for any sort of medical emergency situation going forward.

I tried talking to the receptionist over the phone about scheduling directly because the extension line was being stupid and I wasn’t given a scheduling number and couldn’t find it online for whatever reason, only to be disregarded, met with an EXTREMELY passive aggressive attitude, and sent to the same extension line I was having trouble with. I had tried explaining to the receptionist that I was calling her BECAUSE I was having an issue with the extension line so I was wondering if I could make an appointment directly with her, but she quite literally kept disregarding me and wouldn’t let even let me explain further. I barely got any words in and it was extremely frustrating. She asked me over and over again for more “clues” while quite literally interrupting, rushing me, and disregarding the so-called “clues” I was trying to give her. I am not kidding when I tell you she sent me over to the extension line A SPLIT SECOND after she said she was going to send me there, not allowing me to even say anything — almost like she was waiting to be done with me and didn’t want to “deal” with me even though her entire job is to “deal” with patient’s concerns. ALL I was trying to do was call reception to let them know that I was having trouble with the extension line so I was calling them directly to try and schedule as I wasn’t given a number to directly call specifically for scheduling. My family and I have been going to Heywood Hospital for over two decades now, the only reason being that it was close by than other hospitals. I’ve noticed that we only really have trouble with communication over the phone. Overall, I don’t recommend going here. They (“they” as in reception, nurses are great from my experience) seem to hate their jobs, so they take it out on patients. If you do go here, I recommend scheduling appointments face-to-face because for some reason, they’re awful at over-the-phone communication. It has been like this ever since we started coming here over 20 years ago and I’m surprised we even lasted that long.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient programs are designed for clients who are medically stable and not at an elevated risk of relapse, including those who have already completed inpatient care. Outpatient programs typically advance clients' established treatment plans, offering continuing addiction counseling and recovery education. Clients who enter outpatient care immediately following detox may also receive medical and mental health assessments and personalized treatment plans. Most outpatient rehabs provide multiple levels of care to align with clients' unique needs.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

A drug intervention in Massachusetts provides friends and family the opportunity to share how a person's substance use has caused problems in their lives. The goal of the intervention is to encourage the person to get the treatment they need. Most rehab facilities offer intervention services that can help families prepare for the intervention and facilitate entry into treatment if the person agrees to get help.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) facilitate clients' sustained sobriety through high-level care aligned with their evolving needs. Clients engage in multiple treatment sessions per week, typically receiving between nine and 20 hours of outpatient care weekly. The frequency and intensity of treatment gradually decreases as clients stabilize. Many intensive outpatient rehabs offer a variety of services, including addiction counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT). Evidence-based complementary therapies are also common.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP), also known as day treatment, allows you to receive rehab-level care while living at home. PHP treatment requires a minimum of 20 hours of treatment each week for an average of 90 days. PHP treatment plans can vary depending on your needs but typically includes relapse prevention, medication management, and evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Most insurance providers fully or partially cover PHP treatment.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

Due to various health issues that substance abuse causes, 24-hour clinical care in Massachusetts is often a necessary part of treatment. Individuals may be suffering from infections, illness, or organ damage. Having 24-hour care available ensures that these physical problems are treated along with the psychological effects of addiction. Once individuals complete detox and are medically stable, this intensive level of supervision ends, and the next phase of treatment can begin.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Rehab aftercare programs offer customized, wraparound support for clients in the maintenance phase of recovery. Many clients enroll in drug rehab immediately after completing intensive inpatient or residential care. Services encompass outpatient treatment but often extend long beyond the completion of a formal recovery program and typically include a variety of medical, mental health, and social service programs. Peer coaching, relapse prevention, 12 step program induction, and related services are commonly available.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

There is a strong link between nutrition and addiction. That's why drug rehab in Massachusetts includes nutrition therapy to teach you healthy eating habits that support addiction recovery. You'll learn what foods your body needs for healing and long term health.

I have been at Heywood Hospital for the past 3 days with an acute pancreatitis attack. The staff has been incredible as soon as I stumbled in the ER doors, with the worst pain imaginable. I am six weeks postpartum and being away from my newborn has been terrible but the staff made it bearable. Shout out to Therese, my ER nurse! Thank you EVERYONE!

Sitting here with my step dad. I had to give him his call light because it was not in reach. He pushed it at 2155 and here it is 2210 no one came but said I will have your nurse come in. I came here about 2000 and the did an xray, labs gave him nitro and told him they would be back in 5 minutes no one ever came back. The put a stretcher in blocking half the door way with another patient on it and never moved him back. This is why I told my husband to bring me to worcester...

The doctors nurses and staff at Heywood are just amazing. Twice ive been laid up in the hospital for several days and these people just enjoy taking care of people. Nicest people very friendly and they'll listen and talk to you instead of rushing out. They're very concerned with your every need and assist you the best they can. I couldn't have asked for a more comfortable stay. Thank you Heywood staff.

Went in to have our baby delivered, but had the worst stay. There is so much inconsistency and we felt like we had no voice in anything. A nurse tossed all our stuff around and pulled the bedsheets from underneath her without warning her just because she wanted to. there was so much miscommunication that a careless nurse gave her way too much meds and caused her to have an emergency c section when her and the baby were both healthy. This is why you put notes in the computer not a scrap paper. The doctor who insisted on the c section didnt even check her she just went off what someone said 6 hours prior. And the operating team nearly forgot a tool inside her. The whole experience has been tragic. There is so much more that I won't even mention. DO NOT HAVE YOUR CHILD HERE, THEY SHOULD BE CLOSED AS THEY CANNOT PROVIDE PROPER CARE FOR THEIR PATIENTS.

They need WAY more parking spots, including Handicap spaces. I'm a cancer patient with neuropathy and have a placard and I don't think I've been able to park in a close spot ever.

The people all seem good but this is the most poorly organized hospital I've ever had the displeasure to visit. Every visit there seems worse than the previous one. They routinely waste patients time with incorrect signage poor communication and lack of routine follow through. Get you act together, heywood.
