About Recovery Unplugged Drug & Alcohol Rehab Virginia

Recovery Unplugged offers a full suite of outpatient substance use recovery for adults and adolescents in the DC Metro area of Annandale, Virginia. They offer general outpatient and intensive outpatient care (IOP) alongside partial hospitalization programs (PHP). Each of these levels of care may incorporate medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid recovery. Patients may also receive MAT as a standalone program.

The most outstanding feature of Recovery Unplugged is their music-assisted treatment. This involves using beautiful music to help patients build trust, process trauma and enhance emotional expression while reducing stress.

The facility boasts a safe, supportive and comfortable space with all the amenities necessary to help you build a strong foundation for recovery. They even offer virtual outpatient care that’s as effective as the onsite treatment. This lets you receive care at your convenience and saves time. The virtual program includes day, evening and afternoon sessions with 24/7 staff support.

Medication-Supported Recovery for Opioid and Alcohol Addiction

MAT pairs behavioral health therapy with FDA-approved medicine to ensure lasting healing. They use meds like methadone as well as Suboxone, naltrexone and Vivitrol at Recovery Unplugged to help you manage withdrawal symptoms and lower your cravings. You’ll then attend therapy to take care of the underlying psychological symptoms and build strong coping mechanisms to prevent relapse. This fosters lasting abstinence.

Support at All Stages of Recovery

Recovery Unplugged’s full spectrum of care aims to support patients regardless of where they are in their recovery journey. Both PHP and IOP are highly structured programs for patients seeking relatively intense therapeutic support for moderate to severe substance use but without residential rehab. You may stay in offsite transitional housing or continue living at home during these programs.

Regardless of the level of care, your treatment will involve therapy groups and individual psychotherapy to build coping strategies and prevent relapse. The client attends music therapy sessions involving musical performance in the fully equipped musical space. They may incorporate supplemental therapies like mindfulness and meditation, exercises and yoga.

The broader services include medication management and monitoring as part of psychiatric care to support patients with co-occurring mental health disorders. You’ll be able to continue following up with your care provider if you already started medication-assisted treatment. Recovery Unplugged offers ongoing support post-recovery.

This was my first time in treatment. Honestly, it completely changed my life. The bonds that I ve made in this place, the sober network I ve built, getting my psych meds right, the entire staff and facilitators- have all been such an extraordinary experience for me. I never understood the difference between just being sober/clean versus actually working a program/recovery. RU has helped me to understand that recovery goes beyond clean time- and it s about changing who you are for the better and continuing to progress as a person overall. I highly recommend this place to anyone who has even the slightest desire to change their life for the better. Gold star all around! AND THANK YOU FOR CHANGING MY LIFE!

Accepted Insurance

Recovery Unplugged Drug & Alcohol Rehab Virginia works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Clients who are in early recovery, leaving detox, or experiencing a crisis often require the intensive treatment of an inpatient rehab facility. Clients in inpatient care receive robust clinical supervision, housing, and meals, allowing them to focus exclusively on their recovery while they stabilize. The primary treatment modalities used in most inpatient centers include extensive addiction counseling and recovery-focused life skills training. Many drug rehabs also offer holistic therapies, such as music, art, fitness, and experiential therapies.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Clients in an intensive outpatient rehab (IOP) benefit from robust support but often do not require the high-level supervision and round-the-clock clinical care provided in an inpatient setting. Clients engage in multiple therapeutic sessions weekly, with most programs requiring between nine and 20 treatment hours per week. Intensive outpatient rehabs provide a wide array of evidence-based services, including addiction counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, holistic therapies, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).
12-step icon12-Step
Once involved in a 12 step recovery program, clients can commit to a model of life-long recovery rooted in spiritual growth and intensive peer support. 12 step meetings are anonymous, peer-led, free, and accessible day and night, year-round, in most communities. Self-selected sponsors provide one-on-one coaching as participants work through the steps of recovery. These steps are based on spiritual principles used to address the origins of the addiction and to encourage self-compassion, forgiveness, acceptance, and accountability.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
A drug intervention in Virginia requires careful planning and execution. Due to complex family dynamics, intervention services are often necessary to help families successfully navigate the process. An intervention specialist can help family members plan what they will say and then facilitate the conversation. This expert also educates everyone involved about addiction, enabling behaviors, and treatment options.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers a structured environment for intensive treatment of behavioral and substance use disorders. PHP treatment can consist of sessions ranging from 6-8 hours per day for an average of 90 days. You can often expect to engage in behavioral therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and receive medication. PHP treatment is often covered either fully or partially by insurance providers.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Known as the first step of the addiction recovery process, medical detox is the removal of addictive drugs and alcohol from your body and helping manage physical withdrawal. Medically assisted detox takes place in an inpatient setting where you will be closely monitored by a team of medical professionals to ensure your maximum health and safety. Medications like Suboxone or Vivitrol may be administered if needed to alleviate any potential withdrawal symptoms. This process is typically at least partially covered by most insurance plans.

Treatments

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in Virginia is a short term form of talk therapy. Participants usually have homework between sessions, which may include journaling, self talk, and setting SMART goals. The aim is to transform negative thought patterns into positive ones.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational interviewing in Virginia allows clients to examine their lives and consider their options. It is particularly useful if the client lacks confidence in their ability to change or is feeling uncertain about their desire to change.

Trauma therapy helps you understand and manage the emotional and physical responses that often follow witnessing or experiencing traumatic events. Using therapeutic interventions, your therapist works with you to reframe that experience, which in turn reduces your anxiety and helps you regain control over your life.

If you and your partner are facing challenges, couples therapy in Virginia is designed to help you work through those in a healthy way. Common challenges that couples therapy addresses include conflict resolution, financial disagreements, intimacy challenges, health issues, and substance abuse.

Family therapists work with all members of the family to understand the roles they play in the addiction dynamic. Addressing these patterns is crucial to developing healthier ways to interact and support each other, as well as contributing to a more effective recovery for their loved ones.

If you've experienced addiction, you may have lost the skills to self manage and adapt to change. Because these basic life skills are crucial for recovery, drug rehab programs typically include life skills training as an integral part of treatment.

Recreational therapy is often a part of a holistic treatment center program for drug and alcohol addiction in Virginia. It offers structured activities that replace substance use with positive experiences like swimming, painting, and hiking. These encourage social interactions, promote physical and mental health, and help reduce stress, all of which are factors that are important to help you rebuild your life.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

A bit of a long read!! I wasn’t going to write this because I live a very private well off life with very few aware of my alcohol addiction but if I can save someone from the gut wrenching pain/embarrassment I went through I will do so. I went here for intensive outpatient therapy after detox desperate because I still couldn’t find the emotional/mental capacity to stop drinking completely. When I walked in they seemed to be bothered with my presence and I obviously stood out but I’m an overall outgoing personable individual so i figured they would warm up to me. I’ve never been in any legal trouble or forced to do anything like this, all voluntary. so i wasn’t sure how it worked I just knew that i was tired of drinking and wanted to take the step to continue to try to stop. Long story short I saw breathalyzers when I got in and told them up front without even knowing if I was required to do one that I had a drink to avoid being sick. I was then treated like I had the plague. All while waiting to see if i could attend a therapy session I was continuously interrogated , discriminated against and made fun of for my inability to refrain from drinking which I had no clue was a requirement to attend to get to get sober! I blew 0.08 on the breathalyzer but so did a Caucasian man obviously a regular who walked in after me , when i watched him do it before they even allowed me to. I was then closed in a room, judged by some condescending “clinician” then forced to sit there after I denied services and was picked up. All while COMPLETELY SOBER! coherent, respectful and genuinely seeking help. I was never once given any sympathy, smiles and had to ask for names to have a respectful conversation. A simple you can’t have any drinks before you get here I was instead embarrassed from 6:30-8:00pm like I committed a crime and walked in a church wearing a devil suit. I then took a Uber to the giant and cried for a hour in the bathroom because I was at my Witt ends as that was the only option I had and I wanted to be sober so bad. Wiping my tears sitting with my clothes on dirty toilet in a giant stall. I googled “AA near me” and there was a a single 8:30pm meeting at a hole in the wall down the street. my mom gave me enough courage to go when I was going to give up. I then met the most amazing welcoming group of maybe 12 misfits off all different genders and colors who took me in for me sympathized and heard/related my story. For that I am proud to say I didn’t have a drink at all today and will be attending my 2nd ever meeting at 5:30pm today! I even had a friend come out to get help for herself, we sat together! I want to say everything that looks nice isn’t what you think and don’t give up if this place makes you feel like you are worthy enough to seek help. I was offered to return but the experience was so disgusting I will never go back! Please find somewhere else to go!! Without my determination I don’t know where i would have let them turning me away take me! Stay strong! And stay away from unplugged please!!!!

Recovery Unplugged was an amazing experience for myself who had tried treatment a bunch of other places and routes, it was truly my last stop. Wonderful staff and very engaging groups! Would recommend to any friends or family looking to get clean or follow up on their sober journey to check them out!!

The facility took no responsibility for the THEFT OF PERSONAL BELONGINGS (several hundred $ worth). The counselors did not address concerns voiced about BULLYING by other patients. The “security check” upon admission was so bad, they failed to confiscate CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES of abuse present in plain site in the patient’s backpack. Despite the program claiming it was secular, there were mandatory meetings including rituals and religious prayer. The conditions of the living space and transportation bus were even dirtier than my frat house in college. These are just some highlights of the many complaints my family had with this facility. Absolutely do not recommend!

Subject: Urgent Concerns Regarding Treatment and Facility Conditions I am writing to formally express my grave concerns and dissatisfaction with the treatment and conditions at your facility. My experience has raised several serious issues that need immediate attention and resolution. Firstly, the lack of communication regarding my medication is unacceptable. Failing to give me my prescribed medication is a HIPPA violation of medical standards, and endangers my health and well-being. This negligence must be addressed immediately to ensure that all clients receive the necessary medical care. Secondly, there have been multiple instances where individuals infected with COVID-19 have been admitted to the center without proper testing or quarantine measures. This disregard for health protocols has resulted in my own quarantine and illness since the 20th, causing significant distress and disruption to my recovery process. It is imperative that stringent measures are implemented to protect all residents from exposure to the virus. Additionally, I have experienced theft of personal items from my room. Despite reporting these incidents and the admitted culpability of those involved, I have been unjustly written up. This lack of accountability and fairness is deeply troubling and undermines the supportive environment that a rehabilitation center should provide. I also want to highlight the unprofessional behavior of some staff members who engage in troubling conversations about recovery, which is detrimental to the healing process. While I understand that not all employees are at fault, it is crucial that the facility upholds a standard of professionalism and respect towards all clients. The Issues I have outlined above have severely impacted my trust in your facility’s ability to provide a safe and supportive environment for recovery. I respectfully request immediate action to address these concerns, including a thorough review of the protocols and practices at Rehab Unplugged. I also seek a clear explanation regarding the mishandling of my medication, the inadequate COVID-19 precautions, and the unjust disciplinary actions taken against me. I hope that by bringing these concerns to your attention, necessary improvements will be made to ensure the safety, well-being, and fair treatment of all clients. I look forward to your prompt response and a resolution to these matters. Thank you for your attention to this important issue. Sincerely, Chris Howard

My husband worked through an in-patient program here and his progress has been truly remarkable. He celebrated his one year sobriety date a few weeks ago. He's on a healing journey, stays in touch with people from the program, and is involved with the alumni group! RU exceeded all of our expectations. A special shout-out to Abby and Wu for helping us to feel more at ease throughout this difficult process. I recommend this program to anyone who is ready to work a program and get their lives back!

I’m only giving a 1 because there is no option for a zero. I sent a loved one to this facility for detox and they executively discharged him because he was experiencing cravings and voiced this to staff. He was suffering through the detox and trying to get help. They never called me, his emergency contact, to tell me that they put him and his belongings on the street with his phone battery on 4%. He is a young kid from NJ and has no idea where he is or where to go. According to the “counselor” Amy, the clinical director, Chris Burt, made this decision. The behavior or Jessica the nurse, Amy and staff is shameful. PS there is no music, no bible study and other amenities as advertised.

Okay so I have a lot of negative views of therapy and RU changed me in a way I never expected. The rehab actually works here and the staff is utterly amazing. I can’t stress enough that this is the best possible place to get help. I 100% recommend it and I suggest you to just take a chance. Just go one day and you’ll see what I mean.
