About Casa Serena Treatment Programs for Women

Casa Serena Treatment Programs for Women is a drug and alcohol rehab facility located in Santa Barbara, California. They offer inpatient and outpatient services for women who have substance use disorders. They also treat women who have been diagnosed with both a substance use disorder and a mental health issue at the same time.

Clients in medical detox are assisted through the detoxification process by trained medical staff, who help them manage withdrawal symptoms while ensuring their comfort and preparing them for the next steps of treatment.

Inpatient treatment provides a secure and structured living environment, 24-hour care, and a supportive setting where clients stay for the length of the program. Clients receive personalized care to meet their needs, which may include individual counseling, case management, and group therapy. Therapeutic methods include dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), trauma informed therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), Somatic Experiencing, fitness groups, yoga therapy, and nutritional support.

Outpatient treatment is a low-intensity level of care and usually occurs at the end of a treatment plan. Clients live at home and meet at the facility to receive treatment on a flexible schedule. Outpatient treatment gives clients a place to practice their coping skills and prepare for post-treatment sober living.

Casa Serena Treatment Programs for Women has a lifetime aftercare alumni program, which includes weekly alumni meetings and special events.

Sober living homes are ideal for clients who have completed treatment but aren’t ready to return to their previous environments. Clients live in a shared residence and may continue receiving inpatient or outpatient treatment if desired. Clients must follow set rules to maintain residence, but these homes otherwise have little structure, allowing clients to practice balancing their daily lives and responsibilities with recovery.

Clients with drug and alcohol addictions often have a co-occurring mental health issue, such as bipolar disorder or anxiety. Casa Serena’s care team identifies such disorders and develops unique treatment plans to treat co-occurring disorders and reduce the risk of relapse.

Casa Serena Treatment Programs for Women works with most major insurance plans, including Cigna, Anthem, Aetna, Optum, and BlueShield of California. Clients should always confirm coverage with their insurance provider, as out of network benefits may vary.

I d really like to give ten stars, because five stars aren t enough to describe how healing and restorative going through Casa Serena s program has been for me, and what it has meant to me as I ve moved through early sobriety as a young woman.I came to Casa Serena to do the outpatient part of my rehab stint after spending almost 90 days at a residential program in another state. I wasn t sure I had anything else to learn after doing so much therapeutic trauma work while in residential but I was proved wrong. I flew out to Santa Barbara all the way from the Great Lakes portion of the Midwest to live at Millie s, which ended up feeling like home after about a week of being there. I did four months of outpatient / PHP / IOP programming, and have not regretted my decision at all, even on the days when having to do the heavy lifting of emotional processing in group felt like a lot. I got along with everyone I came across and was treated with kindness, care, and empathy from everyone I lived with or saw at the outpatient building. I noticed that every other woman in the program was treated with the same respect I received each day.I should also say that I m a highly sensitive empath from Ohio, and I take very seriously who I will and won t spend my time with. I would not hesitate at all to tell my own mom, sister, friends, mail carrier, etc. to admit at Casa if it s what they really needed. It s very beautiful that at Casa Serena every type of woman belongs and feels safe enough to be themself, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, upbringing, etc. We re more alike than we are different when going through Casa Serena- each of us has the common problem of trying to kick an addiction that s more or less killing each of us. Wanting to live a sober and healthy life is our great unifier.Would I fly clear across the country to do Casa Serena all over again? Yes! Is it worth the cost? Definitely! Do you learn more about yourself than you ever thought you would? Again, definitely! Will it save your life if you let it? Absolutely. My heart rests peacefully knowing that this team of clinicians works so skillfully, empathetically, and honestly to help women heal from the trauma, brokenness and heartbreak that accompany addiction. If you re ready to come home to yourself, this is the perfect program through which to do so.

Accepted Insurance

Casa Serena Treatment Programs for Women works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

monthly iconMonthly

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Exploitative, Neglectful, and Unethical Casa Serena was a deeply disappointing and harmful experience. I strongly urge anyone seeking rehabilitation to look elsewhere. From the start, the facility broke multiple promises. I was denied access to my cellphone for days beyond what was agreed, cutting me off from essential family support during a vulnerable time. They also failed to submit my disability claim as promised, leaving me to deal with the consequences. When I voiced concerns about their mistreatment, staff retaliated instead of addressing the issues, creating a hostile and unbearable environment. After leaving, I attempted to resolve outstanding matters, but calls went unanswered for weeks until my therapist intervened. Their excuse for refusing to help because I left early was both unprofessional and heartless. The detox process was mishandled, and I left on more medications than when I arrived. Even when I decided to leave, they withheld my medications for days, knowing this would risk seizures and essentially keeping me there against my will. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have been able to go to Casa Serena🙏 it's truly a powerfully healing and life changing place :) I loved my therapist (Haley) and found the group therapy incredibly helpful. The group leaders were all very kind, compassionate and wise. I felt my underlying psychological issues (depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc) were all appropriately addressed and dealt with which I'm so thankful for today. I just celebrated 2 years of sobriety from drugs and alcohol and don't think that would have been possible if I hadn't gone to Casa Serena and received such wonderful care💕 I am truly grateful for the facility and the amazing women I've met along the way❤️

Santa Barbara is so incredibly lucky to have Casa Serena in our midst. "Casa" is a treasure. Whether a person has been building up to the decision to enter treatment, or they find themselves in immediate crisis, Casa is there to offer knowledgeable, compassionate, steady and welcoming care. From the minute I contacted their office, to my interview and intake, and throughout my enrollment, I felt completely cared for. My life had fallen into significant disorder, so the professional but personal care and guidance Casa offered me was amazing. There is a path forward no matter how low one feels due to substance or alcohol abuse and addiction. The people who guide your way to recovery are a cohesive team. An obvious but incredibly beneficial aspect of Casa is, of course, that it is women-only. That makes for a really safe, cohesive environment for recovery. I would urge anyonewho is wishing for or considering the need for sobriety in their life to take the step of reaching out to Casa. With a long history, an esteemed place in the community, and a peaceful, healing environment, you can't go wrong with Casa Serena. Your life, your relationships, and your future will be all be healthier.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
What a beautiful way to describe your experience Elaine! It means so much to all of us that you felt safe and supported here. You are one of the Casa Miracles that light the way for others. I am honored to be a part of this organization, to work with so many talented and compassionate women, and most importantly, to witness clients like you heal. Thank you for the 5 star review!<br> Warmest regards- Sandy and the Casa Team

Life changing experience! The residential and outpatient programs offered by Casa Serena are in depth, comprehensive and powerful. I was able to address not only my issues with alcohol, but also physical health, past trama and spirituality. The therapists and staff are extremely knowledge and care deeply about every client. I was harassed and discriminated against at this treatment program.I was the only non-Caucasian , upper middle class resident who was low-income . I was treated differently than the other residents. I asked for clarification about the house rules that I was being called out for, even though the other residents who were there before me, had been doing since I entered the program. Administration also had there therapists, program assistants, and clinicians monitoring my conversations and all communication. .My personal therapist breached patient//therapist confidentiality and reported to administrators our confidential sessions. I was asked to leave one week into the program, however I cried and begged to stay. I really felt the support from the women in the program and the therapy groups/tools were really helping me, but I was in no state to leave. The administration gave me another chance to stay, but their surveillance was on high alert. Anything I said or did was reported. Finally, after my second week the lead clinician and program director called me into the office/room and said that Casa Serena could not provide the care I needed and asked me to leave. They knew when I entered the program I did not have housing and assured me aftercare would help me with transitional housing. Instead, they kicked me out and I was homeless. I realized later that the resident who slept during therapy groups was given a grant to attend the program that’s why she was never talked to about sleeping in class. The other residents who had issues with the house rules and voiced them as I did, were either cash pay or had PPO insurance so administration was definitely not going to confront them about there concerns about house rules, etc. Even though this is a non-profit, it’s not for all races and/non-affluent residents. I would not recommend this residential treatment program. I filed a complaint with my insurance and the Native American Legal Services.

Hello Lori,<br>Thank you for taking the time to express your feelings and write this review. It is certainly not what we want our clients to experience during their treatment with us. Your review concerns me as we pride ourselves in helping all women that walk through our doors. If there are areas of improvement needed, we will work on resolving them right away. Although we’re disheartened by your experience, we’re grateful for your feedback so we can work to prevent other clients from feeling discriminated against or harassed due to race or socioeconomic status. As the Clinical Director, assuring all clients and staff are treated equitably, fairly, and respectfully while upholding the Casa Serena standard of care is one of my primary guideposts to providing safe, effective trauma informed care.<br>Please feel free to reach out to me directly at 805-729-1505 or email me at smistretta@casaserena.org for any additional support. We are always looking to make our program better in any way possible.<br>Warmly,<br>Sandra Mistretta, CATC-IV LMFT<br>Casa Serena Clinical Director

I am so lucky that I got to come here for residential and then to PHP (while living at their sober living) after. There is something really special about this program & staff and after leaving I feel indefinitely supported. So many amazing women have come out of Casa Serena and as alumni they are still involved and so welcoming to new ladies. It’s hard to describe how life changing of an experience this was in just a short paragraph. I received so much individual care and attention from staff throughout my entire stay. I wish every woman had the opportunity in life to get the help they need at Casa, and after experiencing other residential programs before this I’m really glad I trusted Casa with my money and with my life instead of other not so nice places. Best investment of my life :)
