I went to see Zac Dodson in January 2024 due to issues relating to self-harm. He met with me and we discussed my concerns and he then referred me to another counselor named Gabriel Montero. I only had one session with Gabriel because he made me feel incredibly uncomfortable the entire time. Gabriel asked inappropriate questions and made me feel threatened. Directly after talking about my brother attempting suicide in the past and me finding him in the bathroom, Gabriel asked me if I would’ve preferred to have walked in on my brother masturbating instead. This question was highly inappropriate as well as insensitive because Gabriel was aware that I was a victim of incest when I was younger by my father. Additionally, Gabriel had a real metal axe in his office which was laying beside him while we were talking in the session. He grabbed it during the session and begin talking about its significance, then immediately asked me “do you want to die?”. He then laughed as I sat in silence, completely afraid for my life. He said that that phrase wasn’t a threat. Even he acknowledged that it did seem like a threat. Putting aside the obvious which is that no weapons should be present in any therapeutic space, especially when someone is coming in with self-harm issues, it felt like Gabriel was intentionally intimidating me and I genuinely feared for my life that day. I spent the entire car ride back home crying and panicking. I went to therapy to help with my trauma, only to be retraumatized by someone who was supposed to make me feel safe and understood. When reaching out to Zac (who is Gabriel’s supervisor) about what occurred, he was very responsive at first and assured me that he would talk to Gabriel about the situation, pending release of information documents needing to be signed by me. I signed the release of information form on February 1st 2024, and did not hear back from Zac until I messaged him again on February 16th to confirm if he had spoken with Gabriel regarding the matter. He responded the next day saying he had yet to speak with Gabriel but that they had a meeting later that week and he would talk to him then. Once again, I felt defeated as it did not seem like Zac was taking this matter seriously. Waiting a little over two weeks to talk to him about this is unacceptable and it made me feel like he did not care about how the situation had affected me. After that message he sent, we have not spoken since. Zac did not reach out to me to about if he had or had not spoken with Gabriel. I was feeling embarrassed and defeated, and I ultimately did not bring it up again because it was causing me pain and discomfort to try and push someone to make something right. I ended up filing a complaint against Gabriel to the Florida Department of Health but it ultimately did not lead to anything because Gabriel did not directly threaten me but they acknowledged that Gabriel’s conduct was inappropriate in the letter. Since then, I have been diagnosed with PTSD due to this situation and had to find a different therapist. It’s been difficult to trust another therapist and to feel safe in a therapy office because of this situation. Not only did I feel hurt by Gabriel, but by Zac as well. Zac made it seem like he cared about rectifying the situation and validating my concerns, but ultimately he did not actually do anything to make things right. I would not recommend anyone to HD Counseling because of the way this was handled. I understand that Gabriel’s actions were not Zac’s fault but as a supervisor it was Zac’s responsibility to make things right which he failed at. If you go through the names of people writing reviews on Google for the locations, a majority of the reviewers are counselors who work or have worked for Zac and not actually real clients of his practice. To this day, more than a year since it happened, I still struggle with flashbacks and nightmares because of this.

Addiction Treatments

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Florida provides quality treatment to help individuals overcome dependency related to a wide range of addictive substances. Programs address both the physical and mental aspects of addiction in order to help you make a full recovery.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.
