Do not send your children here!!! They overbill insurance and you. While there I received hours of stick and poke tattoos on my hands(not once interrupted by staff), ran away and spent a night in woods, ran away again but never left campus(took hours to find me and then accused of assault by a staff member(later dismissed) but I was sent to JDC and then had to start over at a whole new facility where I successfully completed that program in 30 days. You will get better here. There are so many people here who genuinely want to help. The night staff especially is really amazing and will make you smile. Stick it out through the food and water which are both very gross. (Ask for flavor packets for the water and you’ll be just fine.) It’s worth it.
I really wish this place had clocks, though. A lot of patients, myself included were even more anxious that we never knew what time it was and were always asking everyone else.
I hated the food so much because it was worse than dog food but hopefully you can find something you like. Because it really is worth it. Especially if you meet Richie, Phil, Lori, Dr. Perry and the therapists. Also Greta the doggy.

As a recently retired Army medic, my experiences at the Kansas City VA Medical Center (KCVA) have been challenging and frustrating.
BLUF: Only communicate with the VA via email to maintain a record of interactions. Customer service or accountability is an outlier here.
Below are the issues I’ve encountered across multiple departments:
1. Bariatric Care
I reported severe nausea and vomiting caused by my medication, which persisted despite significant dietary changes medications. My concerns were minimized, and my request for a medication change was dismissed. When I mentioned cannabis use (legal in my state), the provider instantly attributed my symptoms to Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) without conducting an evaluation or ruling out other possibilities.
Even after discontinuing cannabis, the symptoms persisted. Only when I had to change medications due to shortages did the symptoms stop, confirming the original medication was the cause. Despite this, the provider insisted I continue the same medication. I had to strongly advocate for an alternative, which was eventually approved but only after unnecessary complications.
I a separate occasion, after arriving late to an appointment due to getting lost (partly because appointment details weren’t entered), the dentist focused more on reprimanding me for tardiness than addressing my chipped tooth. When I described the issue, the response was, “What do you want me to do?”
As a patient, I sought professional care, not to have my concerns dismissed. This interaction left me uncertain whether my issue had been properly resolved.
3. Front Desk Issues
At the primary care front desk (far left desk, the only one open), the staff member avoided making eye contact until I raised my voice. When she finally acknowledged me, I was told my appointment was a phone appointment and instructed to leave and call in. I called from the parking lot, only for the doctor to tell me to come in person since I was there.
This Was unnecessary and caused significant frustration. As a result, I now avoid in-person visits whenever possible and request virtual appointments. However, I’ve been told primary care appointments at KCVA are rarely available virtually, further complicating care.
Patient Advocate Issues
The Patient Advocate’s role is to assist veterans, but my experiences have been dismissive and unhelpful. When I inquired about transferring my care to a clinic closer to my location, the response was essentially to research the facilities myself and submit a request. While the advocate was quick to state what wasn’t possible, no actionable guidance or meaningful support was provided.
When I raised concerns about incomplete appointment details in the VA app, which caused confusion and tardiness, the advocate told me to contact My HealtheVet or individual providers, despite my having already done so, and deflected any responsibility of addressing a systemic problem. This created a frustrating loop with no resolution, and the issue remains unresolved. Check your own appointments on the app and see for yourself.
In another instance, after I sent a detailed message outlining my concerns, the advocate’s response was a single dismissive sentence directing me to someone else. Meaningful responses only came when I explicitly requested escalation, and even then, they often avoided addressing specific complaints.
These experiences reveal systemic issues at KCVA, where staff seem more focused on deflecting responsibility than addressing veterans’ needs. The culture of deflection creates barriers to effective care, discouraging veterans from advocating for themselves. Veterans deserve better than being dismissed or left to navigate an unaccountable system alone.
KCVA’s gaps in communication, care coordination, and professionalism undermine trust and make it difficult for veterans to receive the care they deserve. Leadership must address these issues to improve accountability, service quality, and support for those who rely on VA care.

Sorry Clay but you literally tried to make my situation more stressful and degrading than it needed to be.
I was there to take my FENTANYL addiction seriously and seek help. All you wanted to do was summarize my tenure with your “program” as I wasn’t taking it seriously.
You might wonder exactly why wasn’t this fentanyl addict taking the program seriously? Bc failed test for THC. Yes ladies and gentlemen. THC.
I gave this man somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,500 in program fees. When initially it was 1200.
Oh wait I forgot to mention how much of a sweetheart Clay is bc he discounted the rates past 1200 bc those fees were owed because of failure to complete the treatment. Technically the fent shooting addict seeking and participating in the groups wasn’t enough to get him to think about the logic of this.
Now this whole process repeated itself about 3 times and never did he communicate with me about what I need to do to not have to end up owing him money. Not once. I attended this joke of a counselor for around 4 months and gave him 2,500$ I received absolutely NOTHING from. All he cared about was payment. He is like a used car sells man but in the court appointed counseling game.
He literally is the only person running this business. No staff no accountability. He literally can do whatever. And he took 2,500$ from me and I couldn’t be more outraged he hasn’t been investigated by BBB.
Either way I’m at a REAL counseling facility now. Polite staff and they truly seem to care.
Best decision I ever made.
Can’t trust an ex addict to run a business solo and not rip of current addicts. I’m telling you I saw right thru his masquerade

This amazing caring staff IS the difference at heartland. This is an underrated community resource in independence and Jackson county. You should definitely think twice about using this place as a provider if you're getting a court order drug and alcohol evaluation done. Dr. Ratliff will recommend one thing to you during your evaluation and then send your diversion officer a much more serious recommendation of treatment. You'll then be gaslit about what was actually said when you confront them about the huge discrepancy. While it's understandable that they cannot disclose certain records with you for legal reasons, you shouldn't be left totally blindsided by what is recommended.
It definitely appears they want you to go through unnecessary treatment so they can make more money. Talk to your lawyer before you choose a provider and get a second opinion.
For what it's worth the other counselors and staff are very attentive and will likely serve you much better.

As a fellow mental health therapist, I recently had the distinct privilege of touring this Embark Behavioral Health campus, and I was genuinely impressed by what I saw and learned. My visit included an in-depth look at the residential hall, the impressive indoor gym, and the welcoming dining area, giving me a comprehensive understanding of their program and facilities. From the moment I stepped onto the campus, it was clear that Embark places a high priority on creating a well-maintained and therapeutic environment. The grounds were immaculate, and the buildings themselves gave a sense of calm and care, which is so crucial for individuals in residential treatment. The residential hall felt genuinely comfortable and safe, with spaces designed to promote both individual reflection and community building. The indoor gym was particularly noteworthy. It's clear they understand the vital role physical activity plays in mental well-being, and having such a well-equipped, accessible space indoors is a significant asset, especially during inclement weather. The dining area was also inviting, suggesting that mealtimes are viewed not just as sustenance, but as opportunities for connection and routine. Beyond the physical space, what truly stood out was the professionalism and knowledge of the staff I encountered. Everyone I met was incredibly nice, welcoming, and clearly dedicated to their roles. Their insights into the program were thorough and demonstrated a deep understanding of the complex needs of the adolescents they serve. It was evident that Embark is committed to evidence-based practices and a holistic approach to mental health treatment. Learning more about their specific program components, their focus on individualized care, and their commitment to family involvement further solidified my positive impression. As a mental health therapist, I recognize the immense importance of these elements in achieving lasting positive outcomes for young people. If I were ever in a position where I needed to send a child to a residential facility for mental health treatment, I would feel incredibly comfortable and confident considering Embark in Independence as a top option. Their well-maintained campus, dedicated and knowledgeable staff, and comprehensive program truly set a high standard for residential care.

I was a client At TLC for at least six months and then discharged honestly for me I had a great time I have no idea these parents are talking about the one in the first photo I was there for that kid the only reason why her therapist told her no for the headphones was because they were working on headphones and then when they got unit headphones she refused to use them for the second one a hold is mandatory you cannot blame the staff they're just doing their job and if your child wouldn't have struggled then she wouldn't have so many bruises apologise but I was here for both of these kids both of these kids were in the wrong during their stay because the one that got into the hold tried to fight a staff so of course the staff has to put them in a hold because that's physical aggression and then as soon as the staff tries to put them in the hold she struggles which causes them to hold her tighter and make them stay longer the more she moves the tighter they get the girl that got bullied because of her autism she did not get bullied because of her autism she got bullied because she would cuss people out she would cuss therapist out obviously I had the same therapist so I can put this on put in that therapist was like the best therapist in the world like I have him again before that therapist left he spoke so many good things about your daughter he spoke good about your daughter even though she did so many bad things to him I'm not saying “this is the kids fault” because basically if I'm saying that I would be telling myself that same thing I'm saying that didn't help your kid and that was your objective go to another place I've been to 2 places TLC and pathways send them to another place if they don't do good especially kids in foster care the caseworker is obviously going to send them to another place if they're not doing better after discharge please this place is done so many good things for me I literally struggled in the beginning I got in so many holds in the beginning so many runways in the beginning as time progressed I got better and they finally let me out and I wasn't in a hold for like 3 months

Absolute garbage. How many times does a suicidal person have to say they’re suicidal before getting help? (Not me, a member of my family)
We were told that our family member had to call the crisis line at 8pm and 8am every day over the weekend, they then called us back to tell us “our crisis team says that’s too many times to call, you’re going to have to take over the call times.”
This is why people ☠️ themselves, by screaming into the void and not getting the help they need.

Words are so inadequate to express the level of gratitude that I have for Taylor and the staff at MRC. Prior to meeting Taylor, I felt terrified and helpless not knowing how to help my daughter. Taylor not only took the time to speak with me and explain the need for a recovery program for her, but he came to the hospital and spoke with her personally. Sharing his story with her and his words of encouragement helped to convince her that she needed a recovery program to overcome an alcohol dependency. Taylor and MRC quite literally saved my daughter's life. For that, I am eternally grateful.

Great programs they have here at common ground…
Excellent program for older adults. My brother has been going to common ground for 30 plus years. He has outlasted plenty of staff members. The clients are each other’s family members. 😊

Ashley colt is amazing but I wasn’t a fan of my therapists changing every few months. Therapy is a no go here but my psychiatrist is thoughtful and caring.

The front reception desk team is friendly , attentive and helpful. I have never felt so seen , welcomed and accepted. The NP I saw was so down to earth and understanding. My therapist was genuine and I truly felt heard. After a horrible experience with another facility with Burrell I came here, and I’m so glad I did. Courtney , Hannah and Tanner are all amazing team members here. I’m very sad to be moving again, and leaving their care. But I won’t forget the kindness and generosity I experienced here. Thank you all so much for what you do. I wish I could send everyone here.
So warm , welcoming and inviting. Snacks , water and charging stations and vending machines in the lobby really make a difference for people who are waiting on rides or waiting in between appointments. I can’t say enough good things. Thanks again y’all.
