There really are no words for how incredibly wonderful Newport was for my child. She went in with so many struggles and came out with a completely different attitude and coping skills to deal with the hard times. I was completely supported by the INCREDIBLE staff there the entire time. It truly was the best decision I ever made for my child. I wish I could give them 100 stars. I am forever grateful to Newport and the wonderful staff there. Thank you all <3

They were very good. They helped me when I was at my lowest. They worked together to distract me. I awoled a lot, people probably say I was supposed to go there but I did. They truly helped me. The therapists are also really good, and well trained. I really can’t call out just one person, because they all came together to support me.

I cannot speak more highly of Newport. I read negative reviews when considering sending my 12 year old. I was terrified. No parent wants to do this, let alone drop their kid out of state. It was a horrible decision but we decided to take the leap for fear that her life may be over if we didn’t. (Or that she would never move past the pain she was in, at best…) Our experience was wonderful. Newport treats the kids like they matter. The rooms are cozy and more home-like, which warmed my mama heart. This place is what I wish all crisis intervention places are like, but sadly are not. Children deserve better. Newport does it right. My child is better off for having been through the program. She came back with tools and a better outlook. We then got her in a therapeutic school and I’m happy to say she’s thriving! I’ll never say it isn’t a journey. She still struggles here and there. But we are light years beyond what we hoped for back then and I attribute quite a bit to the care she got at Newport. She would agree and that says something …

Accepted Insurance

Newport Academy – Mclean works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Clients participating in a rehab aftercare program receive comprehensive and customized support as they leave high-intensity treatment, reintegrate into their community, and focus on maintaining their sobriety. These programs offer a wide variety of services to align with the client's unique and evolving needs, often including medical, mental health, and social service program referrals. Clients typically develop their drug rehab aftercare plan in conjunction with their case manager and care team.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers a structured environment for intensive treatment of behavioral and substance use disorders. PHP treatment can consist of sessions ranging from 6-8 hours per day for an average of 90 days. You can often expect to engage in behavioral therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and receive medication. PHP treatment is often covered either fully or partially by insurance providers.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

When men and women in Virginia participate in group therapy sessions, they learn to freely express their emotions in a non judgmental setting. This helps you process your feelings and begin to understand the link between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are associated with addictive behavior.

Men and women in Virginia use individual therapy to focus on addiction related challenges as a necessary part of their drug and alcohol addiction treatment. Your therapist guides you in developing coping strategies, setting realistic goals, and building a strong foundation for an improved quality of life.

Trauma therapy helps you understand and manage the emotional and physical responses that often follow witnessing or experiencing traumatic events. Using therapeutic interventions, your therapist works with you to reframe that experience, which in turn reduces your anxiety and helps you regain control over your life.

Family therapists work with all members of the family to understand the roles they play in the addiction dynamic. Addressing these patterns is crucial to developing healthier ways to interact and support each other, as well as contributing to a more effective recovery for their loved ones.

Recreational therapy is often a part of a holistic treatment center program for drug and alcohol addiction in Virginia. It offers structured activities that replace substance use with positive experiences like swimming, painting, and hiking. These encourage social interactions, promote physical and mental health, and help reduce stress, all of which are factors that are important to help you rebuild your life.

Because some people find it difficult to talk about their experiences, creative arts therapy is often used to supplement talk therapy. This expressive form of therapy offers a variety of outlets to explore and communicate emotions.

My 14-year old stayed at the Creekside site and had a very positive experience. The Newport Academy has created a curriculum from evidence-based therapies and interventions. All staff, including techs (who are with the teens all the time), are trained in CBT and/or DBT. They focus on navigating relationships in the moment, communication skills, and the family system, which other RTCs give lip service to. Kids cannot change on their own. The family system needs to change as well. Newport gave us valuable tools to support our teen. Our therapist was very experienced. The first couple of weeks are an adjustment for any teen and should not be used as a measure of any program. Most kids spend some period initially resisting treatment, acting out, testing boundaries, before they give up and get to work on themselves. Our therapist was very experienced working with insurance to obtain single-case agreements and advocating for continuations of care. Most insurance will not have these good RTCs in the network but will negotiate a daily rate for individual patients. The house was huge and beautiful with a movie room and fully supplied art room. Their school program allows kids to continue their education through Apex, a remote learning company many states will accept credits toward HS graduation. They have in-house tutors who supervise and assist and communicate with parents. We got a detailed weekly report on progress made. I highly recommend this program. I also recommend getting a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation for your teen if you have not yet done so. Without disclosing our own personal journey, I will just say I came to recognize many kids needing this level of care have an overlooked autism spectrum diagnosis, which is harder to see in girls. My teen is now happy, thriving and self-confident, but it took 18 months of hard work from my teen and us as parents to construct a school and home environment that allows her to thrive.

Response from the owner
Thank you for sharing your detailed and thoughtful review! We’re so glad to hear that your 14-year-old had a positive experience at our Creekside site and that our evidence-based therapies, including CBT and DBT, made a meaningful impact. It’s wonderful to know that our dedicated staff and comprehensive family-focused approach provided you with valuable tools for supporting your teen’s journey. We appreciate your recommendation and are thrilled to hear that your daughter is now happy, thriving, and self-confident. Your insights will undoubtedly help other families navigating similar challenges!

I was concerned when I read the reviews, and so glad I read them with a grain of salt. My daughter suffered from depression and related issues. It was a roller coaster ride of ups and downs before Newport Academy. Yes, she cried to come home, and made up stories to get me to bring her home. I did not cave, gave her talks to become invested in her care, and let the process work. My daughter came home in a much better mental state. She is now off medication, a freshman in college, and living a happy and productive life. I credit Newport Academy with getting her on the right track. I will forever be grateful.

Response from the owner
Thank you for sharing your family's story, Karen. We understand how difficult it can be to trust the process, and we admire your commitment to your daughter’s healing. It’s wonderful to hear that she is now thriving in college and living a happy, productive life. We’re so grateful to have been part of her journey, and we wish her all the best for the future!

My daughter came to Newport academy after several acute inpatient stays over the course of 9 months. She was also in an intensive outpatient DBT program and nothing was working. She was experiencing severe depression and mood instability. I believe the programming at Newport is exactly what she needed. They are in a comfortable house with other kids their age that are going through the same things. There is no social media and no pressures from the outside world. The therapists, care coordinators and nurses truly care about each patient. The schedule is full yet still allows for some downtime. They go on outings in the community on the weekends and have the opportunity for weekly equine therapy sessions. She was at Newport for 79 days and I can honestly say that now that she is home, she is a different child than when she first got there. It was so incredibly difficult to send her into someone else’s care, but ultimately that is what she needed and it’s so amazing to see the changes that she was able to make. Thank you to all the wonderful staff at Kentland. She misses you all so much!

I sent my daughter to Newport during a time when she was truly struggling and needed a step up in care. We were met with caring and compassionate staff that wanted to help guide her in a path of healing. They didn’t make it easy for her, she had to do the personal and hard work in order to feel better and be discharged. She ended up being there for a little over two months with step down care to PHP for another 3 months. Overall I am so thankful and pleased with the progress she has made and it wouldn’t have been possible without Newport and their amazing staff offering their support to her and our family.

Response from the owner
Thank you for sharing your daughter’s journey. It’s wonderful to hear how Newport’s team provided compassionate care, while also encouraging the personal growth she needed to succeed. Her progress is a testament to both her hard work and the staff’s commitment. We wish her continued success!

I know the following may sound crazy to many people, so I’d like to start with a quick intro. I’ve worked in the mental health field for over 5 years - wilderness “therapy” with 72hr shifts, a youth shelter, group homes, and everybody’s favorite, long-term residential. Between the 4 of these, I’ve been attacked/spit on/bit more times than I care to admit, emotionally abused by management, and have put an embarrassing number of clients in holds. I took a year off after a work-related concussion, then, very hesitantly, decided to apply to Newport. I was offered the job and immediately began questioning everything and everybody. For the first 3 months I had my guard up, and head on a swivel; surely I was going to be hit. It’s been 2.5 years, and I’m happy to say I haven’t been hit once! For me, Newport (Virginia) has been a breath of fresh air, an opportunity to breathe, and has allowed me to slowly heal from my PTSD. Yes, it does have its flaws and drama, but it pales in comparison to most jobs in the field. Some of our clients are difficult to work with, but they’re making progress. Our clients go on outings, can go outside regularly, and are in a therapeutic environment that gives them (most of them) to show significant progress in a month or 2. When they’re done with their stay, we have a department that ensures they’re set up for success and continued therapy. While I understand my experience will not be everyone’s, I urge you to try it out.

Response from the owner
Thank you for your transparency and for highlighting your unique experience. It’s wonderful to hear that Newport provided you with a safe and healing environment. Your insights into the challenges of the field make your positive experience even more meaningful.

Sent my child here when she was running away and self harming. Not only did they make the problem worse by pampering her delusions they never input our insurance even though on intake they said they accepted our insurance and now we have a lovely bill of $363,000 after the fact. Wasn’t until I made her move somewhere else that any progress was made! It has been a ridiculous waste of time and money. I will never see that money in the lifetime I live and now it’s on us?? Insane. Do not put your child here.

My daughter went here after escalating symptoms of what her therapists have said is likely borderline personality disorder or a mood disorder or both. She just lied her whole face off and they believed everything she told them, not even bothering to review her actual documented history. They discharged her with little progress at all, did not complete the treatment program they promise on their website or in their paperwork and basically treated her as though we haven’t been taking her to mental health professionals the last 4 years trying to get answers and help. Now she refuses to participate in after care or transition plan at all and just makes up random stories about any diagnosis or lack thereof depending on who she’s telling. Her records from there look like they’re talking about a completely different person than her previous evaluations and therapies, making it even harder for us to get her appropriate treatment. Do not recommend this place if you’re like looking for real help. This is a very expensive bandaid at best.

This place made me feel very, very trapped. We did the same thing every day, there’s NO therapy on the weekends, and I just felt 100% worse being there. Luckily I was able to get out of there after 3 days using my own strategies, but I did not feel cared for by the higher level staff whatsoever. I am doing so much better at home and have my own future ahead of me. Not 40 days of terror. I highly doubt that any staff of people of that nature are reading this, but I highly suggest adding therapy on the weekends if you want the process to be more effective. Maybe even make it a choice just for the weekends. To anyone reading this, if you have to go here without consent, good luck. -Umbra
